In Search of My Body - Not the One I Ate... Vol. 6: Goddesses just want to have fun

Is it a Mainer thing to dive into slightly above freezing water when you could just go to the store?

Yankee thriftiness or something?

And, is it wrong to laugh? Because while you could have gotten hypothermia, it's pretty funny.

Me? I'd go to the store. But I'd also never have made it as a frontier woman, colonialist, or fulltime Mainer. ;) Heck, I can't even run a full 5k!

Ok, so YES it is a Mainer thing to dive into the freezing cold water instead of heading to the store, because while the store is "just on the corner," the corner is 15 miles away. On back roads.

Seriously, everyone says, "Oh the drug store is just down on the corner..." but it is like a 15 minute drive to get there! :rotfl2: But since it is a long, straight road with no intersections, it really IS at the first corner.

And yes, it is hilarious so you can totally laugh.

E: :scared1::scared1: on the freaking cold water! And a totally big whatever to the DD girl.

Liz::woohoo: to you and Kat again on the 5k! And you will be able to run the whole distance at some point. It took me about 5 months from starting from absolutely no activity at all to be be able to run 3 miles without walk breaks.

Okay, going to laugh.

Amy, sure. The thing is, I did a 5k last year! So, really, I've regressed. Yay me.

Lisa PR, I am so proud of you for finishing the marathon. What an ordeal! WOW. I hope you feel like it was a good experience all over.

E, so let me get this straight. 30 min warm happy drive round trip, or 40 degree water and freezing cold then clamminess for like 3 hours. There is a choice here? :confused3

I need a race report! Now.:flower3: I don't have another race until June, so I need to live vicariously through everyone elses!

LisaPR! WAY TO GO! A whole 26 miles. Kill me now.

Don't forget the ".2" Lyz. The 26 I can handle. It's that final ".2" that is the killer

S'ok, Nance. You get a bye for tonight. But tomorrow, I'm gonna need that TR.

And please! Post pics of Becca's cakes! I would love to see what that little dynamo of yours can do. :goodvibes

HAPPY SWEET 16 SETH!

And CONGRATS to NATE on the medical stuff! WOO HOO! Big day in the Hayes house!

I will post pic's. And you've been drinking, so it's ok. But you've got my guys flipped. Nate is 16 and Seth...well...medical cleared but sadly our story doesn't end there. :sad2:

Hey all. Back safe and sound. Tired, dehydrated and a case of heat stroke but yeah, I finished.

Lisa - I can totally relate. You do everything you can to prepare, but the weather is definitely the wild card that you cannot control. When your body is not used to that kind of heat it's just brutal. Kudos to you for taking your time, resting when you needed to and completing the marathon in a SAFE manner. :cool1: I am SO happy for you. So, so proud.

Nashville is such an awesome city. We have friends who live there - in the country music industry. Totally cool. :cool2:

Sadly, I didn't make it to the bike shop yesterday, but it is on my calendar for Wednesday right after work. I have been reading and am thoroughly confused, but the bike shop I am going to is the best in the area so I have complete faith in them to answer my questions. I'll keep you posted.

There are so many options, it can definitely be confusing. Ask loads of questions. And definitely take test rides. It's much like buying a car. Gotta make sure it's the right fit to get the job done before you spend the money

I spent the better part of the weekend doing things for my parents. My sister and I were at their camp all day today getting things set up so that they can start living there for the summer

How's Dad doin'? Good I trust? Is he keeping up with his therapy? :confused3

Nancy, are you anemic or low iron. Did I dream that? :confused3

You dreamt it. But that's ok. I found your info interesting :flower3:

At this point, there is no choice. One of us is going to have to go in after the nut.

Listen Erika. I'm going to tell you something very, very important. There is ALWAYS a choice  OMG you are freakin' insane. There is no way on God's green earth you would have caught me diving in after a nut. Ever. Not even in August.

Liz, Kat, Ronda - how were your races today???? Liz - you say you couldn't "run" an entire 5K - but you did DO it, yes? That's a victory in my book.

YES, she and Kat both finished! They wogged it (WAY hot there as well). And finished! And Liz was a rock star raising nearly $1,000 for breast cancer research!!!

a couple of Becca's cakes....

Not the best pic's - this first one is all fondant - 4 "presents" stacked on each other

IMG_1560.jpg

This picture is definitely not the best angle. It was a castle w/Cinderella on top & the Prince & Carriage off to the side. She was 11 when she did this one.

One more.

This one cracked me up. It was SO friggin' hot - and the whole cake just wanted to slide. She has waaaay more patience than I do, that's for sure.

Hey all. Back safe and sound. Tired, dehydrated and a case of heat stroke but yeah, I finished.

The day ended up being 87 degrees. One poor man died after finishing the half. People were dropping like flies from heat stroke. At mile 22, I nearly passed out. I told my partner to keep going and I found some shade. I lay there for at least 15 minutes trying to talk myself into finishing. After I felt cooled down and had regained brain function, I ran the last 4.2 miles to finish. I slowed a lot to check on many people who were not looking good anymore. Really none of us was at that point. The heat was brutal and there was a 15-20 mph wind that was in your face a lot. The hills were definitely not the enemy on Saturday! I am proud of myself for getting back up and finishing the whole 26.2. Would I do it again..... yeah I would. My family has nixed all fulls in the future though. They were way too worried about me when I was not showing up and then they saw my running partner cross without me.

Thank you for all your support and love through this ordeal. I truly appreciate each and every one of you. I am officially in marathon retirement for the time being. Mike nixed the VAB and all other trips this year though due to economy worry. He ruined the first 2 days of vacation with his poor mood and honestly, I don't have much interest in traveling anymore anyway. Too much PIA for me. I am going to start working on quickening my short races and toning up some more. I just weighed myself after eating dinner and I currently weigh 1 pound more than I did when I left. Can you say dehydrated still??????? :scared1:

Some scary times, but I am glad you finished. Congratulations!

Nancy, those are amazing cakes! She is super talented!

Tell us more about Seth. What's going on?

Funny story....

So today in Maine it was supposed to get to the upper 70s! (That is mid-summer temps for us.) So Jeff and I decided to put the dock in at the camp. At this point, it was about 65*. Pleasant.

So we heaved and shoved and got the dock in (it is 3 peices). We get all three pieces in the water and then have to bolt them together with these really huge, thick steel bolts. Riley is on shore holding the ropes so we don't go floating down the lake on an un-tethered dock.

All of a sudden...ker-plunk. Jeff drops one of the nuts into the water. Crap. You have to imagine me on my belly holding two halves of the dock together as Jeff is supposed to be bolting them together.

At this point, there is no choice. One of us is going to have to go in after the nut. Now keep in mind, we just had ice out 2 weeks ago. That means that the water temps are really just above freezing. Like 40*. :scared1:

I was wearing running shorts and running t and crocs. He was in jeans. Guess which one of us had to go in to fuh-reezing water??? OMFG it was SO COLD! And I had to DIVE down, full submerged, to find that f-ing thing! All I could think of was LIZ! (Do you know how she HATES to be cold???) After THREE separate times in (cause I could only stay in for half a minute), I gave up and went to the hardware store to buy a new nut.

On the way back, I stopped at Dunkin Donuts for a hot chocolate. Mind you, I was still in my wet clothes. Since they are running clothes, they dry super fast (don't absorb any water), but I was still damp. And it was NOT mid-70s. It was mid-60s with NO sun. Cloudy. And the dippy little gum-snapping teen with pink hair gives me ATTITUDE. "Really? You want hot chocolate? It's like the warmest day of the year!"

Listen, wench, while it MAY be warm out, the lake in which I was just submerged is 40 f-ing degrees! And I am wet! And do you give people grief who come in and order COFFEE??? Which is also a hot beverage???

End of story.

OMG E torture!

I can't believe you didn't smack her in all of her Pink Lady wannabe glory.

YES, she and Kat both finished! They wogged it (WAY hot there as well). And finished! And Liz was a rock star raising nearly $1,000 for breast cancer research!!!

Spectacular!

I truly wish we could have added a few zero's behind that number.

Nancy - your daughter's cakes are beautiful. She is truly talented. What is going on with Seth? Happy Birthday Nate!!!!

Erika - um... when do I get to move into the camp? It truly looks beautiful there. Um - what possessed you to jump into 40 degree water for a fifty cent nut? I don't care if the store is 15 miles away it is a nut...

Liz and Kat - I'm with Amy that I need a race report...

Ronda - the same goes for you...

Speaking of trip reports, here is mine from Martha's Vineyard...

So here is the long promised trip report from last weekend’s trip to Martha’s Vineyard…

Friday:
After a quick stop at my company’s office and a stop at the bank, my sister picked me up and then we were off to pick up my cousin Brian. The three of us headed out towards Woods Hole where we were picking up the 5:00 ferry to the island. The trip down was surprisingly fun as one of my other cousin’s was texting Brian for most of the trip. We caught up with them somewhere south of Boston and ended up being on the same ferry as them. The ferry ride was uneventful and in 45 minutes, we were pulling off the boat in Vineyard Haven and onto the island. Friday night was spent getting settled at the B&B (which was an awesome place) and then it was off to my cousin’s house (about 2 blocks away) to spend the night drinking and catching up with the family. In total, there were nine of us who travelled in from upstate NY, my cousin who lives on the island and her three daughters, their husbands and her three grandchildren. Those of us who came in from upstate had booked the entire B&B. My cousins were staying at their mom’s house.

Saturday:
We were up early as breakfast was being served at 8:30 and what a breakfast it was. Three cheese quiche, stuffed French toast with/ blueberries, totally rockin oatmeal, fresh strawberries, fresh blueberries, cantaloupe and sausage. I ate way too much, but it was yummy. After about another 2 hours of trying to get the crowd up and out, we were headed out to explore the island.

First stop – Mamensha to spend some time on the beach. Here is a pic with Riley who is just too cute for words.

Then it was on to check out the cliffs at Gay Head

DSCN1266-1.jpg

From here we drove to Edgartown and then on to Oak Bluffs. In Oak Bluffs, I was fascinated with the gingerbread houses of the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Association. They are so cute and are built on a circular street around a green. It was idyllic.

DSCN1272-1.jpg

We stopped and had lunch at this brew pub in Oak Bluffs where most of the crew had oysters. I had half of a chicken salad sandwich. It was yummy though. Then it was back to the B&B for a little bit of a break and primping for dinner. My cousins had arranged for dinner at a hotel in Vineyard Haven. They had rented a banquet room and arranged for a buffet for all of is. Dinner was yummy and the time was spent chatting with everyone. After dinner, it was back to my cousin’s house for more drinking and chatting. My one cousin’s husband is from Albania and he had brought out some grape based home brewed hooch that his relatives make. This stuff smelled liked tequila, but tasted nothing like it. I had a tiny sip and that was plenty for me. After another few hours, it was time to call it a night.

Sunday brought another yummy breakfast courtesy of the B&B (homemade Belgian waffles…) and then time spent talking some more about plans for a camping get together this summer. Some of us decided to go check out the house where Jaws was filmed since it was a mere ten minutes from where we were staying. After a bit of trespassing on private property we got this picture.

DSCN1290-1.jpg

After that, it was time to pack up the car and head for the ferry. We stopped in at the Black Dog for some shopping and to pick up some pastries to bring home to my parents. The ferry arrived and after some tearful goodbyes we were on the boat heading home. The ride home was uneventful, but fun. My cousin was spinning tunes on his ipod for our enjoyment.

The weekend was a fun time and we are all looking at making this an annual trip.

Sorry there are no photos of me. Donna hasn't brought over her camera for me to download the pictures off of yet.

Have a great night eveyone...

Paula! That sounds like the ideal weekend at MV! What fun. I love family.

Kat & Liz! How awesome you ran this race together. That's the best part. Well and the money raised. Wish I was there. LOVED the post race call.

Wow! What a race. I'm proud of you for finishing AND checking on other runners despite what that'd do to your time! Yay Lisa. And of course your husband ruined the first two days. Alpha dog, gotta piss on everyone.

Camp photos!

EriKa - I want before pictures too!!! Come on, you know I do. The big room was amazing. So the dock. Very picturesque. But, I'd fall off that ramp! I can't believe you went into that water. Well I can.

Don't forget the ".2" Lyz. The 26 I can handle. It's that final ".2" that is the killer

Oops! Sorry Lisa!

Your friends with Faith Hill & Tim McGraw! Loved Becca's cakes!

I did nothing today. Well I can't say nothing. I did help Mad rearrange her Webkins Account. But I didn't even leave the property till 9pm! I have got to get back to going to church.

I just adore the East Coast. Sounds like loads of fun.

I really don't have before pics. It has all been so rush-rush. But the main thing we are doing is that the big room was REALLY big and the previous owners just put up this drape thing in the middle of the room and put the bed behind the drape and made that the bedroom. So we put in a full wall to make it a real room. And we built two closets because there weren't any. And we had to re-do the ladder-stairs up to the loft.

You would not fall of the ramp. We changed that as well. It is no flush on the water and we built stairs (just 3 steps) from the yard down onto the dock so that it is not slanted like a ramp.

So going in the water. It had nothing to do with saving the 50 cents. It was about time. And the fact that if I took half an hour to go to the store, it meant that Jeff would have to sit there holding the dock together and Riley would have to stand there holding the ropes, etc. Just a mess all the way around. So it just made more sense to go in.
