In Search of My Body - Not the One I Ate... Vol. 6: Goddesses just want to have fun

PAULA! You are a machine! HOLY COW! Another 2.2 pounds DOWN! Super proud of you!

All I can say is what an amazing thing exercise is because I have not been eating perfectly lately. The food thing is under control with some splurges from time to time. It is the time logged at the gym that is bringing these results. I am positive that if I stopped moving, the weight would just be pouring back on.

Thanks for the support. It really does help when I am stuck on an exercise bike for 35 minutes on a beautiful day... I so need a real bike so I can bike outside. Also, the encouragement means the world to me since my new goals are fitness driven and not scale driven. Bike race, 1/2 marathons, what's next?

Umm, are you Catholic?

OMG. Too funny. My exact thoughts were:

Is the Pope Catholic?
Do the Irish drink green beer on St. Patty's day?

But, then I decided I would keep my big mouth shut, because I have done nothing to resemble a TR of my own :rolleyes1

LisaPR? Nancy? How many grams of protein do you eat on a daily basis?

Not 1g for each lb I weigh that's for sure. I'm getting about 75g most days.

I'm sitting here telling Kat the background on my mom -my dad just called with more not-so-good news,

:grouphug:

Steph - :woohoo: for the walking!

Paula - congrats on your loss! :yay: sounds like your discussion went well. One of my go-to afternoon snacks is cottage cheese. I'm a bit picky about my cottage cheese - I only like the Breakstone's 2% in the little snack-pack. One of the best things about it is it's pre-portioned and for 90 calories you get 10g of protein - plus you can get it w/the activia in it. :thumbsup2

Headed to bed. I have an early morning beating with Erin tomorrow. Should be brutal. I haven't done any strength training in almost 2 weeks :scared1:

Hi gang...

Um Liz and Kat, I sort of expected to see a trip report waiting for me so get on that would ya... The pics are great though!

Made it to JC, made it to the gym for a proper cardio workout (after two weeks of not doing anything other than strength training) and I feel pretty damn good.

First report time - Lost 2.2 pounds this week and logged in 3 strength training sessions. No cardio though.

I talked to Deb about the mid afternoon snack thing and she did not have a problem with my eating some protein although we both nixed Jesse's suggestion of peanut butter since that is more of a fat in JC land than protein. So we talked about a few ideas that will work into the plan without adding major calories. One suggestion was to do greek yogurt and fruit, cottage cheese, low fat cheese and fruit or veggies, etc. She also suggested egg whites or egg beaters as well as some low fat / lean meat and keep it to one, one ounce serving. I am going to try that for a while and see how that goes. She understood the whole protein and fiber thing and didn't really fight what Jesse was saying.

I need to bring in the JC info to Jesse and let him take a look at it and offer his thoughts on what to tweak. I have been thinking about starting to transition off of JC food for a while now and Jesse offered to help with that so now maybe the time to let him take a crack at it. At the end of the day, a one ounce serving of lean protein is about 50ish calories, so it is not like I am going to break the bank with this little extra. Maybe later it will make a big difference, but for right now, I should be fine. Thanks for all of the info so far. I love learning from you all.

E - 1 gram of protein for every pound? That seems like an awful lot to me. I would basically be on an Atkins like diet trying to get all of that protein in.

Nancy and Lyz - enjoy your flies...

Liz - sending hugs for you and your mom...

Gotta go do some work now. Talk to you all later.

Paula! That's awesome. My favorite protein snack is some egg beaters with some veggies or mushrooms, maybe a little cheese.

Also, the encouragement means the world to me since my new goals are fitness driven and not scale driven. Bike race, 1/2 marathons, what's next?

Be careful Paula! Questions like that can lead to all kinds of trouble. Like muddy-buddies or triathalons :rotfl2:

Nancy - I love that cottage cheese for the same reasons you list. One thing about JC, I am all about buying things in preportiond containers. It may cost a little more, but it is so easy to stay on plan when the 'work' is done for you.

Good luck with your training sessin tomorrow. May the exercise gods be with you. (begging for mercy doesn't hurt either. I did that after my flu)

I am heading to bed as well. I am exhausted and need to have a dog free night of sleep (been dog sitting for my parents and Ozzy is an extremely early riser which doesn't mesh well with my night owl habits).

Catch you all on the flp side...

Okay, trip report.

First installment: Thursday/Friday.

So, left Thursday, got in around 7. Liz picked me up, Emily immediately decided I was her new bff. She ran up to me in the airport and hugged me, and from that point for the rest of the night she had to get in and out of the car on my side, hung on my legs, etc. She is just as adorable as the pics would suggest.

From there we got cheesesteaks at a stand in Philly, mm. Home to unwind, watch the rest of the hockey game, and bed.

Friday I slept in while Liz tooks the kids to school, she came home and took a nap. We got up around 10ish, Liz gave me a mini-tour of Red Bank. We stopped at the sub shop where the owner totally gave her subs on credit (their kids go to school together) because we had no cash. We picked up the kids from school, came back and hung out a bit, then Matthew (her friend's child) got sick all over the floor, I freaked a bit, and took Emily to play outside with bubbles.

Friday night was cover band at a Red Bank bar. We had good pub food, then much to drink.

Here are me and Liz at the bar:

This is Liz's friend Jodi and I (notice the happy beer):

Okay, this one is at the diner after the bar. Erika, this one's for you. CHEESE FRIES!!!

Next installment coming as soon as I can type it.

Be careful Paula! Questions like that can lead to all kinds of trouble. Like muddy-buddies or triathalons :rotfl2:

I know... Jesse already is plotting for me to do a tri after the 1/2 marathon. I told him to keep dreaming. Did I mention he wants me to run the marathon. My contractor mouth came out and after a few f-bombs, I think he got the hint that I had no intention of running any more than I had to. What the hell have I gotten myself into? :scared:

Sure... tease me with photos as I am about to head off to bed... You two are evil.

The pics are awesome by the way. Glad you both had a great time.

Okay, Saturday.

Beach day! We went back to the place we got the subs on Friday, and picked up some subs and packed some beer and sodas and headed out to a place called Sandy Hook. Unfortunately, even though it was 85 at Liz's house, it was about 60 and windy on the beach. We ate our subs, and made it about an hour before giving in and heading back to the house.

Emily and me:

They drove me around the old military base there, which was beautiful.

On the way home, we took a pic at the Quick Stop (Clerks!!):

After showers and a bit of relaxation, we headed out to dinner at a nice Italian place in Atlantic Highlands. Gotta carb up for the race!!

Next, race day!!

Race Day!

Nick tapped on my door at about 6:10AM, which for me is WAY on the early side. He was nice and had coffee ready and waiting. E knows this one well, Kat in the AM = COFFEE.

Greg met us here, and we left the house around 6:30. Drove to Newark and then took the light rail to the park where the race was to be held. We meandered around a bit, saw the governor who was running the race as well. Liz and I warmed up to some Zumba thing that they had, and then lined up for the race.

Here are Greg and I before the race:
race1.jpg

The first mile was really, really hard for me but a lot easier for Liz, and vice versa for the last mile. It was really warm out and we both got quite a bit overheated. Greg of course, lapped us and waved.

After we cooled down and were feeling a bit better, we wandered around the booths some and then headed back to shower and head over to Jodi and Greg's for the after party.

Here are Greg and I after the race:

And Jodi and I in her kitchen (my shirt is covered in water from the sprinkler):

The party was a lot of fun, I met Liz's parents and Nick's parents, and Greg's parents. Nick's mom talked my ear off, really nice woman.

By the end, though, I was really tired and had somewhat overindulged, but Liz and Nick were very gracious of my drunken ramblings and have (hopefully) forgiven me.

Today I slept in while Liz went grocery shopping, and when she came home we went for pedicures and met Jodi for lunch. After, picked the kids up from school and went to the park and enjoyed the nice day, then back to spend a bit of downtime at home. Dinner was yummy pizza at a local place, and now we are sitting in the living room watching Twilight.

My flight leaves at 8:30 tomorrow, and back to the real world. It has been a great weekend!!

Morning everyone!!

Kat/Liz, looks like you had a great time at the race and fun before/after too! Great TR and terrific pics!

Erika, 1 gram of protein per pound that you weigh is too much for a normally active person. For a highly active person (i.e. when you are in serious training for something) you can strive for this but it is doubtful that you will achieve it. That is a lot of protein for anyone to eat. I eat a protein and complex carb at every meal and every snack and I take in between 50-60 grams a day. That is relatively half of my body weight and seems to be working for me. Maybe shoot for that number instead.

Paula, I do not agree with the protein and fat that Jesse is recommending, nutritionist or not. If you were a body builder you would eat no or very little fat and that is how you encourage your body to eat its own fat. You should be gaining your "energy" from complex carbs which will regulate your blood sugar better and keep you in a more steady state of energized. Fats work similar to sugar as far as energy goes and they stick with you a little harder. I think your idea of bringing your current diet recommendations (JC) to Jesse to discuss what has been working for you is the best plan. And full marathon, girl, I will run it with you! We call it slogging here (slo-jogging). I had to walk a lot of this last one and there is no harm in doing that either, just make sure that the marathon you sign up for has a broad time limit or says "walker friendly" on it. Otherwise the sweeps are going to force you to move faster than you really want.

As for increasing your protein suggestions: Hard boiled eggs (the whites not the yolks). You can carry these with you and eat them with some whole grain crackers or a piece of fruit. Another suggestion is the Greek yogurt any way that you like it, smoothies, topped with fruit, etcetera. Cottage cheese, cheese sticks, Laughing Cow spreadable cheese for crackers. I eat almond butter with my apples and bananas. Yes it has lots of fat but they are "good" fats in the giant realm of bad ones. Hummus for dipping veggies in is another good suggestion. Hmm, maybe I have some more in my little fried brain. I will look around.

Those were the main things I wanted to comment on. I will have to go back and reread to get the rest. I looked in the mirror this morning and part of my part in my hair (wow that didn't make much sense) is STILL fire red and burned from the race. So see, I really DO have a fried brain!!!!

I got my official clock time which was 6:28:03 and my Garmin says 6:20:33 which is a 14:38 mpm average. Not bad considering that mile 23 took me over 43 minutes. Yeah, the rest break in the park. It was worth every minute though as my last miles averaged under 12 mpm and where I was unsure if I sped up at the finish or not, my Garmin shows a 7:36 max for the last .2 miles so I must have been running faster than I was feeling. I am actually not even sure what I was feeling by then...

I went to the gym and had a great upper body workout yesterday. I also got on the elliptical and did 3 miles there. No pounding and the nice stretch in my gait felt really good. I would have gone longer but I had pick up duty. Shelby has her first game tonight. She is starting as catcher which is odd as they have a girl who has been catching since she was 4 on the team. I guess the coach likes the way Shelby and the pitcher work together. She should. They have been best friends since they were 9 months old. Near twin telepathy. It is kind of freaky. It is supposed to be mid-80s here today (Erika gets a break on the coast) so hopefully Shelby will not overheat today. :rolleyes1

So, what race is everyone looking at? I would love to be a companion for one of you during a race just to help you get through. It is so mental and having someone there really does help!!

First of all, well done on the race time! :cool1:

Second of all, ouch! My hair parting is the bit I always forget about and man does it get sore when it burns!

Good Morning everyone. Still feels like night time to me, I did not get one second of sleep last night. Not one. And now Im at work tired! :sad2:

Good morning everyone...

Kat and Liz - the race report / trip report rocks! You all look awesome!

LisaPR - thanks for the info. It is going to take me a little bit of time to get through this adjustment. I know understand why Jesse didn't want me to alter food until we got into the training because I would have been completely overwhelmed if I had tried to change both at once. I made a little oven omelette thing last night with egg beaters, ff cheese and some veggies. It is an old recipie from my south beach days and is yummy. The bonus is that it freezes well so you can make a big one and then portion it out accordingly. Between that and some of the other options everyone has suggested, I should be good. As for a marathon, I am so not there yet. I need to get through this bike race in July and the 1/2 marathon next year and then I can figure out what is next. One step at a time right?

Tonight's schedule is a little backwards. I am training at 5:00 then freshening up and meeting the Tuesday Night Dinner crowd at a local restaurant to officially celebrate my mom's birthday. So I have a big, hearty snack to fuel up with before I go to the gym and then will graze at dinner.

The sun is shining here today. Of course, I am stuck in a windowless office for most of the day, but lunch in the park will be wonderful.

Enjoy the day everyone,
Paula

Sorry for the lack of sleep Kelly... Hope all is well.

Good morning! It is a gorgeous day here! And Lisa, we are supposed to get to the 80s here as well. WOW. And then tomorrow, right back to the 50s.

On protein--yeah, there is no way I could get in that much protein per day. I am aiming for 60-75g/day. I did 75 yesterday and felt great. Not hungry at all at any point throughout the day and I ate much fewer calories than normal, plus plenty of fruit for healthy carbs.

Have a great day! I am grading and cruise planning today. And going for a run before it gets too hot.

:rotfl:Yeah, EriKa doesn't need much.

Ohh, you met the families. Interesting. So, I forgot (?) Greg was running this race also.

Kat & Liz - Did you try to jog some or just wog fast? What were your thoughts while running?

Kat - This was your first "thon" - what did you think? Misery? Intriguing? Where did you fly into? Philly? Exactly how far away is that from RB?

Liz - I absolutely LOVE love love how you and Jodi just naturally do everything together. "We going out?" "Call Greg & Jodi?" "Lunch?" "Did you call them?"

I looked in the mirror this morning and part of my part in my hair (wow that didn't make much sense) is STILL fire red and burned from the race. So see, I really DO have a fried brain!!!!

Yeouch! That hurts!

So very awesome Lisa!!!!!

I went bathing suit shopping yesterday and didn't die. It wasn't great, but it wasn't completely awful and hideous either. Got some stuff from Land's End that I can genuinely feel comfortable in.

And yes! Nancy and I will have to do a Muddy Buddy at SOME point! :cool1: OMG, I am dying to do the one the day before the cruise. I asked J if he wanted to do it with me. That got a resounding NO from Mr. OCD. :rotfl2:

I was going to do it with my buddy David Parfitt (of podcast fame), but he ended up pairing up with another guy as it was easier than doing a co-ed team and they did the whole fund raising thing (which I just didn't have time for). So I'll just have to wait until Nancy and I can figure out a way to do one together.
