In Search of my Body...Not The One I Ate.. #4 "Inspiring Others... 1 Tiara at a Time"

Erika, you are a goddess. I couldn't have even come close to putting my thoughts into words like that, and I couldn't agree more.

I think WW is a great program. I have considered switching to it many times, but calorie-counting works for me. It works for me because I am anal to a fault, research the living crap out of everything, and love math and puzzles and formulas. To me, this is all like a game, and it helps keep me on to try to figure out the best way to play it.

Plus, even though I can be a junk-eating fiend and LOVE me some cheese fries, I really do want to be healthy, and read and research and try to make sure that I am getting a good nutrient balance.

One of the reasons I was okay with Mr Kat's decision to try low-carb, is that I thought, and was right, that it would push us to find healthier choices and avoid junk. We, and especially him, had gotten into ruts of choosing easy, quick, not very healthy but still low-calorie choices.

However, you HAVE to buy things in their unprocessed state on low-carb the way we are doing it, because I am only allowing subtraction of "net" carbs from real plant fiber (from a vegetable that is still in the same form that it was when it was living). And we have made a commitment to get in our 5 veggie servings a day every day, and not do high-fat all-meat all-cheese low carb because, well, that just can't be healthy.

It makes life harder, but in the long run I think it will be better. When we go off the strict low-carb program in March, we will have an arsenal of good low-calorie foods to turn to that we are accustomed to shopping for and cooking.

I like to think I maintain a pretty healthy balance of healthy food and junk in my life... Like Kat I too believe calories are the way to go... Going completely low carb is not something I can do because I have a very skinny husband and I enjoy eating with him which is hard enough with me being on a low calorie plan... In the end you have to do what works for you and gets the job done...

But this is the strength and beauty of the WW program. It really teaches you what food are better choices and which one are not so hot. A healthy food that may be higher in calories will be LESS points than junk that may be lower in calories but has no fiber and lots of fat. You have done WW, so I am sure you get the idea.

Exactly. For example, pasta. 1 cup of whole grain pasta comes out to be 2 points, where 1 cup of white pasta is 4 I think. Same deal with brown vs. white rice. And sweet potato vs. white potato.

And just for ha ha's, I went onto the Annies website. A "pretzel dog" calculates out to be 9 WW points. For me, that's about 1/3 of my daily intake. If I really wanted it, sure, I could make it work. But personally I'm frugal! I want to get the most food for my points, so I opt not to make that choice.

Oh - and in case you really wanted to know, the "jumbo pretzel dog" - 14 points.

Me either. Eloquence is a gift that I was never given :goodvibes

Stragetically planning your next move! I totally get that.

You're right. And people who chose "low carb /high protein" diets don't always do the research you are doing. And they end up eat really high FAT which as you say, is not healthy either. Bacon is NOT a lean protein. Nor is peanut butter. In fact, to call either of them a protein at all is a huge stretch, IMO.

I am off to get my cardio workout in for the day so I'll check in with you all later,
Paula

:worship: You are amazing Paula!

I like to think I maintain a pretty healthy balance of healthy food and junk in my life...

That made me smile. "a healthy balance of junk" :goodvibes

But I get what you mean. Heck you can't be perfect *all* of the time, right? No one can. So you have to be realistic about what you can live with.

Oh and yes checking in...

I did work out yesterday
I did drink my water
and even though it was cheat day I did track my food!

Did I miss one?

Mr Kat did his weigh-in today... and he has lost 10 lbs!!! I am so happy for him. :cheer2:

Nancy, thanks for the info! I usually take into account fiber g, like pick whatever it is that has higher fiber. Although I hate sweet potatoes, so I just add in the white potato and try to moderate use of it (like 1-2 times a week tops). Either are out on low carb, of course, but bring on the spaghetti squash!! :goodvibes

I do eat some bacon and sausage... but reduced fat bacon, and turkey sausage. Both are much lower in fat and calories, and to me they taste the same.

Happy Sunday! Hope everyone is having a great one.

Erika - Beautiful words about WW. Makes me think that I am doing the right thing.

Does anyone have any suggestions about weak knees? I did BL CardioMax yesterday and my left knee crackles like Snap Crackle Pop! Don't think I hurt anything, just modified the work out. Are there exercises to strenghten you knee?:confused3

Felt my last post needed it's own space.

Amiee - LOVE the pic. You are not at all hideous, quit your hiding - pretty lady! You hair looks great.

Kelly - phone - HI LAR IOUS!

Just one, actually. We started this last Sunday. I am down 4.6 (but TOM is going to start tomorrow), and he is down 10. So 2.3% of body weight for me, 3.6% of body weight for him, he wins! And he drank, and didn't work out. Sigh. He does have a non-sedentary job, though.

Hi All,

Well, I'm new here and I don't know anyone on the board except the HockeyKat. So, I'll just post some basics here and later, after I get my profile fixed right and so forth, I'll share a little about myself and how I got here. :coffee:

#1 Name and Family you care to share plus a little about your weight struggles/programs you are on: Roddy(33), Single - I've struggled with my weight since I was a young child. I was the 'fat kid' through school. Finally, over the past three years or so, have gotten a bit of a handle on it.

#2 What are some of your trigger foods? Bread, Pizza, Flour and Corn Tortillas and so forth!

#3 What form of exercise (activity) would you love to do but have limited yourself from due to weight/confidence? Not sure about this, I'm not much of a public personality. I want to look in the mirror and be happy with what I see.

#4 Occupation (if legal) I work for a company that produces power cables. I do what is required. I don't have a particular job title but I assist with engineering duties mainly.

#5 What do you want to achieve from a healthier body / lifestyle? I would like to get married one day, but I realize that in order to make a wise choice in a spouse, I need to learn self-confidence and self-control. Losing weight, I feel, is a great way to learn both.

#6 If you could celebrate with anything when you reach/ed goal, what would it be...or what would it have been? If I can reach and maintain my goal weight, I think that will prove to myself that I can do anything.

Kat - congrats to Mr. Kat for his loss. That is awesome. Still don't think it is fair that men tend to lose at a quicker rate than women, but what can you do. We all have our struggles.

Happy Sunday! Hope everyone is having a great one.

Sunny - I am super careful about putting too much strain on my knees (doctor's orders). I modify everything to pretty much eliminate the jumping. I don't have any words of wisdom about strengthening the knee. I'll leave that to the resident experts like Erika, Lisa PR and Nancy. Good luck though.

Welcome Rod!!!! Hope you jump in and speak up in this bunch. We reallly aren't that scare - really! Self confidence and self control are both things that I am working on as well.

The cardio workout went well. Nothing too big to report there. 35 minutes, 8 miles and lots of intervals. Food wise, I am doing ok today. I am heading to a friend's birthday party tonight and will be faced with pizza and salad as food options. I am going to eat my JC before I leave and then eat salad while I am there. I just don't trust myself with pizza this close to my weigh in. All that sodium really makes me retain water.

Oh - and for those of you following the dating saga, I am going to call cup o joe tonight and let him know that I don't think this is going to work. Aside from my not feeling any particular spark towards him chemistry wise, his constant calling to check in on me is really freaking me out. He has called and left two messages already today (I admit, I am screening his calls now) and one of the messages sounded too angry for my tastes. This guy has control freak written all over him I think. It was a valiant attempt, but I don't think we are meant to be together.

Have a great night and I'll touch base with you later.

Paula

Paula - That's what I did. Just kept moving, not jumping while doing jumping jacks, etc. Thankfully there isn't any pain, just doesn't feel right.

Welcome Rod!:welcome: I just came out of lurkdom last weekend.

Thanks so much for the info and insight on WW vs strictly calorie counting. I think I am going to spend this week trying an experiment and tracking food and WW points - since I have the tracking thing down and all knowledge is power.

I have made some good choices here for the whole family as this is a family deal. No more ground beef - all chicken or turkey. Fiber bars are being bought and only fiber cereal vs other cereals and reg granola bars. We have a fruit stocked fridge with fresh vegies as well. And I am glad for many of those things.

For me the hardest part is the day here or there that I am going to be over in just calories and I tend to beat myself up if something isn't perfect. I think WW just may help that train of thought.

When shopping I have been looking at calories even and saying - this isn't worth it or this is worth it. So a start to a better lifestyle not a day or a moment.

Baylor won 3rd place in his tourney and was so elated. The parents are just an awesome group of people.

I think I have Chad convinced he can take a trip to South Padre with the kids for their spring break - drive and I found a place through VRBO for only $466 for 5 nights on the ocean in a condo. It will be good for them. I think he appreciates the fact I try and encourage them to have time together. I want him to be a great father for them. He and they both deserve that. Carsyn asked me for help on finding a cheap place to visit. She is in money saving mode. IRA's and how she will have $5 million in the bank to retire if she saves $2,000 a year form 18 on. She said she could save more until she had kids, then proceeded to ask me for money for a belt! I said she had mnoney - she said she was saving her's!:rotfl2:

And, a very weird day...I was talking to Chad at the game - and a lady whose son is on Baylor's team, walked up to him and was totally hitting on him. :scared: :crazy2: The weird part was I wasn't sure if I should excuse myself or give my blessing. We had been talking and she walked right up and although I was not jealous at all, I was not aware of a Dear Abby ettiquette letter to refer to in this situation. I decided to partake an ounce in their conversation since I was standing there before she walked up and then excused myself...and then I said a prayer that called for rainbows and unicorns and world peace for all and a date for Chad. Is it strange I was actually excited for him? I don't know. Never expected to be in that position but it did not cause me to act crazy or jealous or anything. We are over and I am just hoping he finds his happiness. But I tell ya - I felt like I was watching my brother get hit on and it was just weird. (I don't even have a brother but it is the closest I could come to explaining that.)

Okay - have a great day and yeah for a NEW MAN IN THE HOUSE!!!
Welcome! :cheer2:

Paula - ugh - ditch the stalkers. He had a chance in my book before but now - has proven himself to be in need of therapy - maybe he wants to give E a job!:rotfl2: :lmao:

Paula, yes. Definitely follow your instincts.

Nancy, hope your rest day makes your muscles happy and ready for another week of abuse!!

R, SOOOO glad you finally joined!! For the rest of you, he has been my friend for many years and is like a brother to me. We joke a lot that we were twins separated at birth! He has already lost a ton of weight, too.

I am going to dye my hair black tonight. Want to do something different and easier to maintain. Here is the box I am going to do: http://www.clairol.com/herbalessences/vibrant/shade_palette_black.jsp#

I think my natural color is really dark brown, so hopefully this doesn't look awful....

Roddy

#2 What are some of your trigger foods? Bread, Pizza, Flour and Corn Tortillas and so forth!

Roddy - Welcome! Are you my brother. Bread. Pizza. Tortillas. (one week at our house, we had "pizza week". Pizza from a different place every night. Yum. - Opps, that's not helping much is it.)

Mr Kat did his weigh-in today... and he has lost 10 lbs!!! I am so happy for him. :cheer2:

:faint: 10 pounds? Good for him. That's really impressive. :thumbsup2

I do eat some bacon and sausage... but reduced fat bacon, and turkey sausage. Both are much lower in fat and calories, and to me they taste the same.

I always use turkey sausage. And turkey pepperoni when we have that as well.

Ok, now you're just spewing hate speech!

:rotfl2: No. really I'm not. I do eat peanut butter. And real bacon. But in small quantities. But when a food has more fat grams than protein grams, I just can't justify calling it a "protein" source.

Does anyone have any suggestions about weak knees? I did BL CardioMax yesterday and my left knee crackles like Snap Crackle Pop! Don't think I hurt anything, just modified the work out. Are there exercises to strenghten you knee?:confused3

yes, there are exercises. First, I think you've said you are careful. And you modify your exercises. That's a good first step IMO. You may find as you continue to lose weight and gain over-all strength, they may follow suit. You may want to consider some specific exercises as well- LisaPR....any advice? :confused3

Just one, actually. We started this last Sunday. I am down 4.6 (but TOM is going to start tomorrow), and he is down 10.

WOWZA Kat. You guys ROCK. :cheer2: Nice when you have someone else doing it with you, isn't it.

Good plan, Paula! :thumbsup2

Uh, yeah. Control freak? :scared: Buh-bye :wave2:

nice job on the groceries, Dawn! :thumbsup2

I think my natural color is really dark brown, so hopefully this doesn't look awful....

:rotfl2: I *think* my hair is really dark brown?

I'm sure it'll look great. Pic's when you're done please.

I'm back. Mealing on some homemade pizza (whole wheat crust too) and salad.

Looks like I have some catching up to do.

WOWZA Kat. You guys ROCK. :cheer2: Nice when you have someone else doing it with you, isn't it.

...

:rotfl2: I *think* my hair is really dark brown?

I haven't had my natural color since I was 17 and started going gray. I am somewhere above 60% gray now.

I took before pics and the color is currently sitting on my roots for 10 min before I do the whole head. Resistant grays and all that.

Oh, and we don't really rock. This is just that water weight whoosh that you get when you go from eating like crap to eating healthy.
