In Search of my Body...Not The One I Ate.. #4 "Inspiring Others... 1 Tiara at a Time"

I know you have all been sitting on the edge of your seats waiting for this!! :lmao: :lmao: My race report. I had alot to say.

Friday 1/9/09

Arrived at WWOS around noon for the expo. Packet pick up was not crowded, but I could not bring the stroller inside. ACK. :scared1: It was a bit difficult keeping up with Delena and picking up my stuff, but we managed.
Headed to the expo to get my shirt and look around. Again, no stroller. And it was more crowded in there, and there were a lot of things for Little D’s inspector gadget arms to grab (So so Sorry to the people at the huge table of Gu! :scared1:) I got my shirt and bought a couple other things from the race merchandise area. Lastly, we picked up my volunteer stuff for the full on Sunday. This was easy, no line.

We then headed to POR to check in. The room was ready and I tried to have Delena take a nap before we headed to POP for the WISH meet. No such Luck. Around 430 we headed over to POP for the WISH meet. It was great to be able to put some faces to screen names. :goodvibes

After the WISH meet, we headed back to POR. I had hoped DH would be here soon, but he got caught up at work and traffic so he wouldn’t be there for awhile. Delena and I headed to the food court where I got the traditional pre race pasta dinner. I had a meet up with my half marathon teammates from my charity team, the children’s tumor foundation (CTF). I met so many nice people.:goodvibes We talked for a bit and discussed plans for meeting up at the bus stop in the morning for the race.

DH finally arrived at 745 ish. We walked back to the food court so he could get some dinner. When we got back to the room, Miss Delena went to bed and I organized all of my stuff for the race. Obsessed over placement of my number on my shirt, obsessed over what I should wear for a shirt. Finally got it all figured out and tried to go asleep around 11 pm. I needed to be up no later than 245 am. I tossed and turned forever. Everytime I would fall asleep, I'd have dreams of oversleeping and missing the race. :scared1:

RACE DAY. 1/10/09
I ended up getting up around 245 since I wasn't sleeping anyhow. I got dressed, checked one more time to be sure I had everything I needed. I walked down to the food court and got some coffee and ate a clif bar before meeting up with my CTF team to get on the bus at 345. I am guessing by 415 the bubs dropped us off at EPCOT and we walked what I am guessing was close to a mile to the bag check area. I hung out there for awhile, drank some G2, and had a team picture taken with my CTF teammates. After that, everyone kind of went on their own to the appropriate bag check tent and then it was on to port o potty city. OMG. So many potties! And I still waited about a half hour to use one! (note to self: pack tissues or some TP next time!) I started to make my way to the start corrals, and I caught up with another WISHer ( hi Tracey! JustSmile) that I had met the night before at POP and “know” from the lean/mean/weight loss thread on the Events board. We walked at least a mile to the start corrals. Wave 1 had not started yet and we were both wave 2 so we used the potties there one last time. We then headed to our respective corrals to await the start of wave 2! The wheelchairs started at 545, And wave 1 at 550 There were fireworks at each start which was really cool! At 6 am Wave 2 was started! More fireworks. It took about 10 minutes for me to cross the start! Upon crossing the start people started dashing off to the sides to take advantage of nature’s bathroom. Boys and girls were doing this. And massive amounts of clothing were being shed. I got rid of my Disney towel that I had borrowed from the room. I did throw it in one of the clothes bins though. They do donate all throw away clothes to charity. Some of it was pretty nice stuff!

Miles 1-6 went by literally in the blink of an eye. The course was crowded and I am not one to weave in and out of people constantly, but I pretty much jogged the first 6 miles, albeit slowly, until we hit the outside of the MK. I took water or Gatorade at every stop up until this point. I wanted to soak up the atmosphere of running through the MK, so I walked more through the park. In fantasyland I saw one of the “coaches” for CTF who was checking on everyone and he ran with me for a bit. I will say right now it was SO SO nice to have the WISH support and CTF team support on the course. It made all the difference. And running in the MK was awesome. Totally had tears during this part of the race.:goodvibes

It was outside the MK, maybe around mile 7.5-8 ish where I started to realize I was probably overhydrated. SLOSH. SLOSH. Ugh. So obviously I quit drinking from this point on. I couldn’t run. Too much sloshing and stomach cramping. Yuck. Outside on the long road out of MK I walked with a girl from my CTF team who was walking to save her legs since she was doing the Goofy. I walked with her from about miles 8-12. It was so nice to have someone to talk to. This was her 3rd goofy!! She ran again right outside EPCOT (about mile 12) and I then happened upon an ex-coworker (not co-irker, thank goodness) who was hurting due to some bad sciatica pain. It was so nice to catch up with her and we really helped each other through that last mile. Which BTW, I was very disappointed didn’t go around world showcase. The Minnie 15 K did. Despite practically puking , I ran the last quarter mile. No way was I going to cross the finish line walking! So, 3 hours and 15 minutes after I started, I crossed the finish line! I got my chip cut off, got my Mylar blanket, and finally my DONALD medal!! I then made my way to bag check and promptly put on my flip flops. They felt so good! I had a huge blood blister on my right pinky toe, and some other smaller blisters. I was still feeling really sick to my stomach, so I drank just a little bit and got on the bus to go back to POR. I had hoped to get a picture with a character and catch up with my WISH and CTF teammates, but all I wanted to do was take a bath and lay down. So I did.

I pretty much lost it when I got back to the room. I got physically ill from the overhydration. I was mad at myself for over hydrating. I was disappointed about my time since it was a half hour longer than my first half in November. And elated that that I was able to finish. And just overly emotional in general. These long distance races have a huge mental aspect to them and they do mess with your head and emotions.

The day after (Sunday)
On Sunday I volunteered at Water Stop 11 for the Full marathon. So much fun. (Hi, Maura, Tracy and Bryan :goodvibes ). WS 11 was in the MK in the back of Splash Mountain. We had to be at the volunteer tent at around 5 am and were transported to the WS by 6 ish. We set up a water table towards the end of the stop. Bryan was called away to go mix powerade, so Tracy, Maura and I ran the WISH water table. Since we were at the end, not too many people took our water, but it was so much fun to cheer people on. And AMAZING to see the wheelchair athletes and elite runners come through. Our first runner came through LESS than an hour from the start of the race. 11 miles in an hour! And awesome to see all our WISH teammates come through! It was also fun to dump the remaining water cups we had on our table into the street and watch this massive street cleaner thing suck them up! I loved volunteering and would do it again!

Lessons Learned:

1. Overhydration is likely as bad as dehydration. I was sufficiently hydrated pre-race and had I not taken any drinks until mile 4, I probably would have been ok. Lesson Learned. I was thinking of my first half, where it was warmer and more humid. I needed to drink every mile or so. It was colder and drier for this race. Very important to take these things into account.

2. No strollers allowed at EXPO!!

3. Time spent talking, walking, running with people on the course is priceless!

4. Starting the race is JUST as important as finishing.

5. Volunteering is fun (and gets you a free ticket and really cool jacket!)

I had a ton of pics, and didn't want to bog down the thread by imbedding them, so here is a link to my album from the weekend.

Awesome report Amy! Kudos to you for starting and finishing the race. Oh my ~ aren't gadget arms the greatest?!?

The model of ASICS I use just came out with their new 09 model, so the 08's are about 1/2 price!

That's awesome. Always great to save $$$ - especially if you already know that you like the shoe :thumbsup2

So I told everybody about my run yesterday and I forgot how sore evrything gets:scared1: I plan on going on a bike ride in a little bit but I do have one question. My hunger is like out of control today did any of you expierence this when starting the C25K? Also how did you curb it?

:confused3

Yep. Your body is reacting to the fact that you shocked it! Both with the physical discomfort...and the hunger. My bet is, that you have been experiencing a bit of an "after burn" effect. Undoubtably your heart rate was jacked way up...and you bascially burned every bit of "readily available" feul that your body had to offer...and as your body was trying to recover from the intensity of your workout, it continued to draw upon it's stores for nutrition....

As you continue with your training...your body will become more accustomed to the exercise (specifically in this case running) and your hunger will become progressively less pronounced. One thing that is very important to remember is you should fuel your body after those intense workouts....with a quality food choice...preferably with a lean protein. Drink plenty of water - keep yourself hydrated. And if you are hungry - truly and honestly hungry...yes - eat...but make sure it is a GOOD choice. Plenty of fresh fruits and veg, low fat meats & cheeses, whole grains. Eating smaller meals more often during the day keeps your blood sugar more stable...avoiding the highs & lows and the hunger & binging that often goes with it. (personally -I eat 6 times a day. with my food pretty much evenly split....)

LisaPR....please fill in my gaps!! :goodvibes

PS - JC weigh in results: I lost .1 pounds. Not much of a loss, but it is not a gain, so I'll take it.

Ok. Paula. That .1 pound loss? That's because of your fella there. That's Jesse. That's the muscle you are putting on in your strength workouts with him. The fat? Yeah, it's leaving....but you are adding muscle mass...so...your scale number isn't quite as "big" this week. It'll pay off though - as lean muscle burns more calories at rest than fat does. ::yes::

Totals for me for today:

Food - 27 points (right on target...)
Wine - still none. and not currently missing it.
Exercise - kick @ss workout. 75 minutes of intervals (thought of you LisaV!!!) TM running/upperbody strength. Total 1330/1500

Off to bed early again tonight....tomorrow...is training day. :crazy2: 7:00am is early for me to be at the gym ready to work!

Amy - I just realized that I never commented on your race report. I am sooo sorry about that. What an awesome report and you have every right to be proud of yourself for not only finishing it, but starting the process to do a race like that. What an amazing accomplishment. I am so proud of you. :goodvibes

I love reading about all of your race reports because the emotional struggle to get to that finish line is harder than any of the physical ones. I know I have a ways to go before I can mentally handle a race like that and reading your reports helps me get one more step closer in towards having the courage to start my own race.

This week, I have started to see the changes my body has been making thanks to my training sessions. It is more than a little strange to look in the mirror and not quite recognize the reflection staring back at you. I told Jesse on Saturday that I am entering an area that is outside of my comfort zone. At first he panicked and thought I was hurt, but I told him that this was a mental thing (and no - I didn't say that I was mental) and kind of left it at that. I have kind of been working to process that statement all weekend and came up with something while on the bike at the gym tonight. Since I am starting to do things that I never thought I was capable of doing I need to find that strength inside of me to in a sense, give myself permission to do the things that I am attempting to do. I need to find a way to stop saying that I am attempting to do and really just say that I am doing. That last phrase really isn't rolling off of my tounge very easily yet, but I have the courage to start and that is one of the important things right?

I'm off to rehydrate. I spent 25 minutes on the bike. Did a five minute warm up on level 9 at an easy rate of about 85 RPM. Then I did three minutes at 95 RPM and then kicked in some intervals. I did 15 seconds of flat out, pedal my bummocks off (115 RPM's) and then 30 seconds at around 85 RPM's and repeated that five times. Pedaled at 85 RPM for another 4 minutes and did the interval thing again. Ended with a cool down. It felt good.

Paula

Erika and Nancy - what kind of shoes do you wear while biking. I am finding that wearing sneakers makes my feet a little numb. I remember reading something that soft sneakers were less than ideal, but I don't know what else to wear. Any help would be appreciated... :flower3:

Nancy - thanks for the info... I figured that was the case. Have a good night and a good session tomorrow morning. Can't wait to hear about it.

Paula

Nancy - 966 calories after food eaten so far...may indulge later but I am very content right now...

I have eaten today:
turkey, potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, lean cuisine cheese ravioli, parma flakes, boursin gourmet cheese (garlic and fine herb...yummo) Panetini Italian toast, hearty rye bread (2 slices) and 1 tsp of butter...

no joke..measured it all...and so far....966 calories...with 8 glasses of water thank you!

As for the couch to 5 k...I did the couch to 10 minute...and had to halt due to a wardrobe malfunction...:rotfl2:

I need to shop for new underoos ...not cool to be running with them around your under butt...
ya know...
the place your buttocal region meets your thighs...:upsidedow

yeah...live and learn...I know in the weight I have lost they were too big...but seriously...sad...and the Y was packed...so it's not like I could just pull em up...hate going that late (6pm) will never do that again...had to wait 15 minutes for a TM...then was concious of the downward creep until I could not take it anymore...and...wondered if the ladies on the elliptical behind me were noticing...

I forgot to stretch before...the tight calves throbbing should remind me nicely ...:sad2:

Night all...sweet dreams!

This week, I have started to see the changes my body has been making thanks to my training sessions.

Have you ever considered taking your measurements? :confused3 I think you'll find with all the strength work your doing, you'll "tone" your body, losing inches and some weeks you might not see the numbers on the scale move a lot...which can be totally frustrating sometimes. However, if you take your measurements, say once a month, you'll be able to have a better picture of your over-all changes. Just a thought...:goodvibes

I have kind of been working to process that statement all weekend and came up with something while on the bike at the gym tonight.

oh - you HAVE crossed over to the dark side, haven't you! Having "ah-ha" moments during your workouts. :hyper:

Since I am starting to do things that I never thought I was capable of doing I need to find that strength inside of me to in a sense, give myself permission to do the things that I am attempting to do. I need to find a way to stop saying that I am attempting to do and really just say that I am doing. That last phrase really isn't rolling off of my tounge very easily yet, but I have the courage to start and that is one of the important things right?

The more you say it, the more you believe it....the more real it becomes. You are strong. And fit. And amazing.

I too find that a stiffer soled shoe is more comfortable when biking (I'll qualify that by saying indoor biking. On my road bike I wear the clip shoes). I quite often will wear a cross-training shoe - it's.. ?...."harder" I guess...than my running shoe.

K. I really am headed to bed. 5:00 comes early...and DARK.

Hey Team, remember me?!?!?

What a LONG day. I just got home. And I have miles to go yet before I sleep. Not real miles...work miles. I wish I had some real miles to do as that would be preferable over work.

NANCY--love that you are the Accountability Officer! HA! Perfect.

PAULA--I agree with Nancy. This is just the Jesse Effect. And thanks for reminding me about core. NO, I have not yet done it, but I will. It may be midnight, but I will get it done. THANKS. Really, I can't tell you how much it helps.

AMY--great idea about using C25K for time improvement. I may have to steal that idea and do just want you do! :rotfl2:

NEWBIES--welcome! Glad you are here. Tell us a bit about yourselves.

KAT--hope you are having a great time at BCV. Um, beer in England yet? I'm sad. (Though happy for you. :goodvibes )

LYZ-- Miss you. Call me if you need me.

Others on C25K--Surprisingly, no I did not have a hard time when I started. And I never ever ever ran in my life. I expected to DIE. But I took to it really naturally and completed the program much more quickly than I anticipated. As for food, no I am not super hungry after a 30-minute session (like the C25K sessions are), but I am RAVENOUS after long runs or long workouts (90+ minutes). OMG, I eat everything in sight. But I am going to try LisaPR's suggestion of getting a protein shake in me first and hope that takes care of the hunger rampage.

LIZ--I will take up stalking again tomorrow.

Updates--so yesterday was supposed to be a rest day for me. And it sort of was. I just did some snowshoeing and snowboarding. Maybe 45 minutes. Last night I was horsing around with Riley and wrestling, etc. Broke my finger. Maybe two. Oh well. I can still lift, so it is no biggie.

Today--NOTHING YET. Can you believe it? Well, I have been up on campus all day and just out straight. Since I am so rarely there physically, I had meetings all day long without a break. And then right to lecture.

Of course, I could have gotten a run in this morning. But I wanted to take two full days off to see how my IT band does. It is much better today, so I think the rest day was worth it. I WILL, however, still get a core workout in today.

Food--I am currently at 1000 calories even. Will have one more snack and end the day at 1100.

Booze--still on the wagon and off the booze. I am missing it now though. I will be fine till the week-end, then it will be a test for sure.

Hi All!

I hope everyone is doing well!

Bruce and I took a long weekend trip out to his parents so i've been unconnected from the world since thursday (no cell phone, cable etc.) But it was nice to get away.....

Off to catch up on all i missed!!!

Kat ~ hope you are having a great time at WDW.

Erika ~ thanks for waking up the thread and living to tell about it, lol. Core?

Hey Hey Paula ~ your swimming instructor should be fired or at least replaced. I so agree with Nancy. You are adding muscle by being Jesse's girl! :cool1: I so relate to your comfort zone comments and giving yourself permission. Keep pushing yourself through those mental blocks! I know you can do it.

Liz ~ we just missed each other. I hit the snooze button 4 times today. :( Your breakfast sounded fantastic.

Stephanie ~ so sad about your friends daughter. :grouphug: I believe 100% in the power of prayer. Swimming when it is beyond freezing, what is up with that?!?

Dear God, I just got to the carepages part. That sweet little angel.

Dawn ~ How did the day of no computers go??? Awesome idea on the measuring.

Kelly ~ I love how you UK-ers use words like rubbish. Love it! We had flavored Twinkies sometime during the late 80's early 90's. I think they had strawberry and cream filling.

Amy ~ Are you training a pint sized running buddy already? I can just picture her trying to TM with you. Scary! 4 shots! Ouch! I would be teary eyed too!

LisaPR ~ I have always wanted to try sking, just don't have enough snow. But it looks like we will soon!

Nancy ~ I feel your pain, but I love to share. :lmao: Especially winter precipitation. :lmao:

ZigZagZerr ~ welcome!

Leanne ~ Tax time can be a real pain. Welcome back!

Heather ~ How are you doing?

LisaV ~ where are you?? Are you doing ok?

I think I got everybody! I was extra hungry today, but didn't let myself go overboard. Crazy day at work, had 15 mins for lunch. :crazy2:

Paula--I thought the same as Nancy. Like, OMG Paula is having a-ha moments while working out! She is hearing the voices! :rotfl2: LOVE it.

On biking shoes---hmmmm....I have never noticed anything one way or the other. I usually wear my running shoes while on the bike since I almost always run first and then jump on the bike immediately from there. I will try to pay more attention next time and will report back.

OMG, what happened? I think this just turned into a weight loss thread! :faint:

Stacey....Earth to Stacey...Come in Stacey!

You have been doing so great on WW. Everything ok?

K. I really am headed to bed. 5:00 comes early...and DARK.

Sleep tight Nancy. Thanks for the info on the shoes. I'll see if I can find something a little harder before Wednesday's 'ride.'

Yup - and we missed you...

Sorry about the broken finger(s). That has got to hurt. Don't work too hard tonight. You need to get some rest.

Thanks to you and Nancy for the info. I suspected that this would happen and strangely, I am ok with it. I can tell from my clothes that my body is changing, but I think I will start tracking measurements. Nancy - since you are our accountability manager, can you remind me to ask at my next JC appointment to update my measurements. They have my official starting stats as well as a second progress set so it would be interesting knowing what they are now.

Hi All!

I hope everyone is doing well!

Bruce and I took a long weekend trip out to his parents so i've been unconnected from the world since thursday (no cell phone, cable etc.) But it was nice to get away.....

Off to catch up on all i missed!!!

Glad you had a great time. We missed you around here. Now get reading.

Newbies - Haven't heard anything from you... Please come out and play...
Paula

So I don't want to get too excited, but my mechanic friend text messaged me while I was still working telling me to be careful tomorrow morning. He knows I don't do too well in this stuff. Back when I was 20 and invincible, I had a Pontiac Firebird that was terrible in the snow. I ended up spinning several times on the interstate bypass and have been scared of driving in snow and ice ever since.

HA! Stacey...you were posting as I was calling you out! :rotfl2: Glad you are back. Hope your little get-away was good.

DAWN--well, I have to hand it to you. :lmao: I have heard LOTS of excuses why people can't finish their run. But YOURS is truly an original! :rotfl2: Never heard that particular beauty before! :rotfl2:

Is there a reason you are on the TM instead of outside? It is SO much easier to be outside. You burn more calories, the time goes by much more quickly since there is more to distract you, and you don't have to worry about being on display. Sure, cars may go by, but that is only a second. Not like when there is someone behind you with nothing to look at but your a$$. (And no...cold is not a reason. I was out in -9 the other day. Just bundle up, buttercup! :hyper: )

How exciting... I have my fingers and toes crossed for you on this one. One of us single gals needs to get a social life so the other can live vicariously... :rotfl2:

Oh and do be careful driving tomorrow.

Thanks for the comments on my report! I know reading reports helped me when I was preparing for my first races. I very much underestimated the mental aspect of it, even though I had read about it.

Amiee her inspector gadget arms are ridiculous. I HATE strolling her through stores at the mall now that have displays at her level. :scared1: Love that the car guy texted you. My BFF is dating again after a divorce and I love to live vicariously through her dating stories. Be sure to keep us updated.

Paula Your bike workout sounds awesome!!

Erika You are such a copycat! :lmao: Seriously, I hope it takes another couple minutes off my 5K time, maybe to sub 32 minutes and the hopefully the rest will come off with some more weight loss and race adrenaline. I find the structure of the program comforting, always knowing exactly what I am going to run. I think by the end of this week, I will probably add on 10-15 minutes of extra intervals. Take care of your finger(s)!!

Stacey Hope you had a good weekend!

Nancy Have fun at your workout tomorrow!!

Dawn I second what Erika said about being outside. I run on the TM only out of necessity. Of course I don't have the cold problem here either. I run faster outside. I tend to just do the minimum on the TM, not pushing my limits at all.

Lyz, Liz, hope you girls are ok.

You guys crack me up. I'm not getting my emotions involved until he comes out and says something in plain English (Can guys do that??, lol)

Paula, speaking of single, how is your hunting going? I remember reading that you were chatting it up, just forgot to ask until now.

Yes, I will be careful. I'm probably going to end up going in to work at 0 dark 30. The opening supervisor lives 30 mins away in good conditions; I live 5, so she better call me if she has problems.

Oh my gosh! The mall with little ones is torture! Children's Place pulling all those matching separates off with ya, lol. My daughter loved to steal tags from clothes. I would always find several in her stroller. Cool for your friend and you! I have to admit that I have a ton of young single kids who report to me and I just love hearing some of their stories. I'm right there with ya!

Just a quick update so I don't make a triple post ~ the sleet and freezing rain is here! I just ran out to coat my car doors with vaseline (the gasket material, don't laugh it helps!).

I caught up on the reading!!!! However b/w work, school, and all that reading, my brain liquified and ran out my ears about 25 minutes ago......

I'm crashing, after work and picking the puppy from my parents i'll post about the weekend/responses to the stuff i missed...

Hope everyone has a great night!!!

E - I didn't weigh in as i wasn't home friday and they didn't have a scale, so i will weigh in this friday and update you for the challenge.
