in reference to the podcast discussion. it would appear there was a sidewalk

not much room between the sidewalk and the road...i can definitely see how things went horribly awry.

Sad, I wouldn't trust my 11 yo on that road. What a horrible accident this was. I feel for the family and anyone involved.

So sad. Accidents happen so quickly. My 15 year old almost died from a bike accident last summer. Simple error on her part, and hit a bump in the sidewalk just at the wrong angle, and head over handle bars.

Helmet saved her life, She did suffer other major injurys and was out of commission for 6 weeks, fortunatly she wasn't anywhere near the road when she fell.

My heart goes out to the family.

But if you compare the size of the SUV in the photo to the width of the sidewalk it looks like that sidewalk is almost as wide as the SUV - ie almost as wide as 80% of a lane of traffic, even if it does abut right to the road without a strip of grass as a buffer. More than enough room for a bike to not be in the traffic unless there were a lot of people walking/riding in the same spot.
