I have had a cold this past week and now I am at that stage where the awful cough arrives. Last night, I must have been awake from 1-3am at least coughing. It was terrible-I am sure you have all been there. The weather has really changed here as well and now it is quite dry and cool in the house.

Can anyone suggest a good over the counter cough syrup I could try? I only have a cold, so I really don't feel the need to see a doctor, plus it is Saturday morning.

Thanks,
Karen (cough cough)

just take twice as much as what you been taking

Next time you feel a cold coming on use ZICAM swabs. They really work. They do not cure the cold but stop the virus from multiplying so you have a mild cold that does not get to the point you are at. 4 days VS 2 weeks.

Robitussin is the best over the counter IMO.

I hope you feel better soon :goodvibes

The last time my daughter had a cough the doctor recommended Delsym. I had never heard of it but it worked great. It lasts 12 hours so it's a good medication to take before bed.

I personally think the best OTC cough syrup is Delsym. However, if your cough does not improve soon your cold may have turned into bronchitis. When Delsym does not work for me, my doctor gives me codeine cough syrup and it works very, very well on stopping the cough and letting me rest. Hope you feel better soon!

Sorry but it is my experience when I have a cough like that that OTC just won't cut it. If it were me, I'd call the doc or go in and ask for something like Endal HD (definitely need an Rx for that, but it WORKS).

When I had bronchitis (and a slew of other things) a few weeks ago the doctor recommended I take Mucinex. I like the DM version of it because it's a suppressant as well as an expectorant. It's great stuff, and it works for 12 hours! I can't praise that medicine enough.

I understand what your going through. I am in the middle of that cold as well. The other night....and I know this was probably bad....I'm lucky I woke up in the morning...I took a dose of the Robutussin AND a dose of Nyquil! I slept really well!! :rolleyes1

BTW KARENB....I HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER SOON!!!

The last time my daughter had a cough the doctor recommended Dysum. I had never heard of it but it worked great. It lasts 12 hours so it's a good medication to take before bed.

Thats the stuff! :thumbsup2 I'd never heard of it a few years ago when my doctor prescribed it but once I used it, I've never bothered with anything else.

Couple of shots of tequilla works well for me.:rolleyes1

But I have heard delsym is the best OTC.

I agree with Mucinex...Delsym has dextromethorphan and that is a good suppressant.

Mucinex has guaifenesin but if you take the Mucinex DM formula, it has dextromethorphan in it. You could take the basic Mucinex with Delsym but not the DM formula. Be careful to read all the active ingredients in the products out there.

Thanks! I will head to the store soon. All I can say is thank goodness it is the weekend.

Karen....don't know if this works....but I just got an e-mail yesterday that said to coat the bottoms of your feet (yes I said feet) :lmao: with Vicks Vapor Rub and put socks on when you go to bed....never tried it and hope I don't have to soon....but believe me I will if need be.....

I usually use NyQuil if my cough is keeping me up at night b/c I definitely sleep better....but whatever cough suppressant you use make sure it has an expectorant in it so it will break up the cruddy stuff that your body is trying to cough out!!

Also, if you would like some herbal remedies.....Pumpkin and Oregano Oil work as antibiotics....I would take at least 2 of each 2 times a day right now....and Yarrow (1) and Elderberry (2) 2-3 times a day are good for drainage or congestion.

I hope you are feeling better soon!!!! :flower3:
