Someone mentioned a lack of washing the tomatoes?
Just thought I'd add you would have about as much luck washing salmonella off tomatoes as you would chicken. Maybe if you used heavy detergents, but I doubt anyone wants that either. And that's assuming the salmonella was only present on the surface of the tomatoes.
