In=Laws told me there was a Salmonella outbreak at WDW? Is it true or not??

Just thought I'd add you would have about as much luck washing salmonella off tomatoes as you would chicken. Maybe if you used heavy detergents, but I doubt anyone wants that either. And that's assuming the salmonella was only present on the surface of the tomatoes.

The tomatoes were diced and prepackaged by Roma, not meant to be washed by WDW.

Are you sure about that? The Canadian Food Ispection Agency recently advised consumers to wash cantaloupe thoroughly when there was a salmonella
outbreak caused by contaminated cantaloupe (in May of 2002)

Washing well may remove some of the salmonella, but it can't remove it all unless food preparation workers spend vast amounts of time and money really scrubbing your food. Most of the reports I've seen indicate that the majority of the people who got sick were transplant victims, indicating that there wasn't vast amounts of salmonella on the fruit.

The fault lays with the people who harvested and packaged the tomatoes. I'm not sure if the tomatoes were diced before they got to WDW or not, but if they were, then there's obviously no way Disney could have washed them.

Washing with just water will do little to remove bacteria. Sure you should wash the surface especially if it has dirt on it which harbors bacteria. The most common way salmonella spreads, I would think, is touching or cutting meat and then moving on to fruit without changing knives or gloves. At this point there is little you can do to decontaminate fruit unless you cook it. All the bacteria certainly won't wash away with just water. I think most people would be surprised to find out how much bacteria still remains on their hands after washing with antibacterial soaps or alcohol containing solutions. And that is certainly more than water.

It may well have not even affected healthy people, but because transplant patients are on high doses of anti rejection drugs, their bodies are more suseptible to infection, no matter where the infection or bacteria originates. From what I have read, those affected were transplant patients, which means that it may have been a minute amount of samonella, and they still may have gotten sick. As someone else said, since the tomatos were diced elsewhere, all Disney could have done is to rinse them with clear water, and that will not erradicate the samonella. Let's put the blame where it lies, shall we?

Wasn't it around the same time(June,July) that a Red Lobster in TN had a pretty large outbreak?

Reading that about Red Lobster not only makes me want to diet but never eat again.Kay1 thank you so much for telling me what restaurants were involved in the food poisioning.I have not read anything about this except what I have read here.Though it is not a good idea to go in the cutback mode like Disney has been doing way to much.You fire your better help and replace them with someone not as well trained. Such is what happened on our last trip.My husband said the girl was not handling the food correctly. Where before that could never happen with Disney always being so perfect.

I apologize .Guess I should have put a warning by that link or not posted it at all.
Just making a point that this can happen anywhere and to blame WDW for something that was basically out of their control.Relatives(who don't understand why we go to WDW) who after they saw the story, called us and said "Did you see what Disney did? They poisoned a bunch of people.Blah,blah,blah.They do it everytime something negative happens and they do a good job of getting under our skin.
