My inlaws just told me today that there was a salmonella outbreak (from tomatoes) at WDW and I was like ... "hmm I didn't hear anything on the boards ...."

Can anyone confirm this? Thanks.

The theme parks board has a thread with a news story link. Sounds like it was reported this weekend, but occured in June from pre-packaged tomatoes WDW used in some food items. They didn't list a specific restaurant. They did say WDW discontinued use of the product immediately.
Something like 114 people affected.

Yes, that's true. It happened in June I think. There were a few threads about it on these boards, and it was on CNN.com, too.

The salmonella was apparently on the tomatoes already when they got to WDW. It wasn't caused by improper food handling by WDW CMs.

Does that mean WDW doesn't wash its produce? That's disgusting.

The news report stated that it was in "pre-packaged tomatoes". I would assume that meant already washed, cut, diced, or whatever.

I am not overly concerned because of the shear volume of meals they prepare and for how many years and this is an isolated and rare case. Only concern I have is that I heard where it affected a convention of transplant patients and is most unfortunate and sincerely hope that no one was permanently affected as I have a daughter who had surgery the first of the year and we have to watch over her carefully for rejection.

Slightly Goofy/Linda (61 pounds gone forever)

The "news" reports were all designed to make you think WDW was responsible for what happened...and it seems they have succeded.
Turns out that Disney acted swiftly and responsibly when they became aware of the problem..a problem which seems to have been NOT of their making.

Yeah this is true. My husband was one of the people that got it on our June vacation and boy was he sick.

I hope he was able to get over it quickly. Nothing like food poisoning to ruin a vacation.

According to the news report, 140 people were affected. Of those, only 3 were hospitalized.

Could someone please tell me what restaurants had the Salmonella food incident at WDW ? We are going there soon and would like to know ?Thank you !

They were prepackaged Diced Roma Tomatoes, and they quickly got rid of them all!:D

Minnie Mate

It must of took him a good week or more to feel like himself again. This happen on our last 2 days of our disney vacation. We ate at a resturant in downtown disney and not more then a hour or so he got really ill. Hubby could not do anything on our remaining days in disney. I really don't think he remembers to much of those days (thats how ill he got).

Thanks so much for the answers to my question about the food poisioning? Also Cinderkerli I hope your husband is fully recovered and what a terrible thing to have happen on your vacation. You would not think that could happen with Disney!

Yeah, it happened in June...old news! It was caused by the packagers of the Roma Tomatos. Could have happened anywhere. I wouldn't let it worry me. We have eaten in at least 20 WDW restaurants in the past year, and never had a problem!

This story upsets me because it had nothing to do with Disney's food preparation practices!!!!

Doctor P, I agree, because you could find that not only in WDW, but any restaurant, or even in your own home.

Interesting isn't it?? No "outcry" against Roma Tomatoes. Only "How could Disney let this happen"---

DeeDee, though I'm sure they have it cleared up by now, our paper says the restaurants were the ones at the All Stars, Port Orleans, and one near Frontierland at the MK.
