We are in Kissimmee now and have to completely revamp this weeks plans due to DDs unexpected strep throat (I am thankful it is this since initially I thought it might be meninigitis due to sore/stiff neck!!). She is so ill I didn't feel I could even get her to a clinic today, but was able to have a dr. visit her at hotel. With the meds he has prescribed he feels she will be considerably better by Thursday. Heres hoping.

Besides the medication, any advice for dealing with strep throat? The dr. just talked to me about the meds and then left. I was so nervous (due to me thinking she might have had menengitis) that I forgot to ask for any more advice.

She is such a remarkable child, her only concern about the whole dr. visit was how much it would cost ME, nothing about how awful she was feeling. BTW, I have insurance that I told her about.

The good news is is that we saw the launch of the space shuttle on our flight down (before DD was ill)!!! It was such a special moment for the kids (and me too)!!!

Any strep throat advice would be greatly appreciated. Obviously we will not be leaving the hotel until Friday since she is not in any state to go anywhere.

Thank you

What can make my sore throat feel better?
Here are some things that might help you feel better:

Taking acetaminophen (one brand name: Tylenol). Gargling with warm salt water (1/4 teaspoon of salt in 1 cup [8 ounces] of warm water).
For adults and older children, sucking on throat lozenges, hard candy or pieces of ice.
Eating soft foods, drinking cool drinks or warm liquids or sucking on Popsicles.

I googled this stuff really quickly, its just basic stuff.
Something i learned on my trip last may. A can of chicken soap fits in the resort mugs, which can be heated in the microwave at the food court.

Hope DD feels better soon.

Now that's a bad typo (soap/soup).
It's a good hint though.

I'd suggest lots of fluids, rest often during the day at the parks, and eat yogurt to help replenish the good bacteria that normally live in the intestines. (Antibiotics kill off any bacteria that are susceptible to them, not just the ones causing the infection. When the 'good' bacteria are killed off, the bacteria that are left will take over).

Two suggestions. First, if your DD doesn't like yogurt, you can pick up at almost any drug store acidophilus, that will replace the "good" bacteria in the stomach (get one that does not require refrigeration).

Second, from my experience & ESPECIALLY my dad's (he got VERY sick while at WDW about 10 yrs ago, he was on the tail end of chemotherapy), as stereotypical as it sounds, get some Chicken Noodle Soup from Beaches & Cream at the Beach Club/Yacht Club. That stuff will help cure virtually ANYTHING that ails you (plus, it just tastes so good!). Also, if you're at B&C and she decides she wants it, a milkshake may make her throat feel better too.

Hope she gets better fast! pixiedust: Enjoy the Magic!

The good news is that the antibiotic will attack the infection rather quickly. She will probably feel good pretty soon. In the meantime, take Tylenol for the pain and fever, push fluids and keep her comfy.

I hope you guys can resume your vacation soon. :wave2:

You might ask the front desk if it is possible to get popcycles or have a place to keep them for her. Or, those plastic tube type of popcycles might be available at a local pharmacy or store.

Just what everyone said is typical advice. She might feel better if she is lying with head a little higher than usual.

If she doesn't improve or if she worsens, get her to ED right away. I am sure she will be fine but it is better to expect the unexpected. Best of luck to both of you.

I wouldn't worry about keeping her in the room if she doesn't feel like it. I would avoid the parks due to energy levels but sitting in the fresh air or near the pool without swimming can't do her harm if she feels up to it.

If she's on antibiotics, she should start feeling better relatively soon (considering how sick one gets when having strep throat). :) I would say within 24-48 hours.

Fluids and rest are the best things for her. The chicken noodle soup and yogurt is GREAT advice.

I'm well informed when it comes to strep throat. Last year my DS, who was 6 at the time, had recurring cases of strep (back to back), except for him it turned into scarlet fever both times. He had to go to the emergency room, had 2 different courses of meds (a total of 20 days), and missed almost a month of school. So I know that strep throat can be very serious and can make a person very, very ill.

Tell your daughter that I hope she feels better soon! Hugs, hugs, hugs!!!

Thanks so much everyone for the info. She is feelingquite a bit better today. We are just going to stay at the resort today and lay low.

I will pick up some of he reccommended items. There is a very large drug store very closeby.

Try dayquil! Seriouslly!!! Ive knocked out strep within two days with it, without goin to the dr.
