Now I could be completely wrong here ... but based on numerous previous threads on long form versus short form BC required for passports ... it has always "appeared" that if you are married, and both parents have the same last name as the child, the short form BC was always acceptable in the past. But if there was a divorce in the mix, one of the parents had a diff last name than the child, or if the child was born before the parents were married, the passport office seemed to "demand" a long form BC in these cases. I remember a Dis'er friend years ago ... their oldest DD was born a year before they were married ... they went to the passport office to get them for all 5 family members ... Mom, Dad and the two kids born after they were married were fine to just have the short form BC, but they had to go and order a new long form BC for their oldest DD, and then make a return trip to the passport office to put in that application.
I've always thought it was a government money grab, but birth certificates are provincial and passports are federal, so that doesn't really make sense.
But seriously, when you order your orig BC for your new child, who would ever think that they should have BOTH long and wallet ones???
I'm really hoping that renewing passports for my kids will not require me to spend the extra $ to basically get a copy of the form I FILLED OUT in the hospital when they were only a few hours old ... guess I should have sent DH to the store to make a copy of it before I submitted it!
