Important follow-up ? to Bratz doll thread!

Okay so the large majority of you that responded to the Bratz doll thread seem to "hate them". Fine. Good. But wait....

The majority of you sited your reasons for hating them as being because they looked like "ho's, sluts, trash, street-walkers, prostitutes," etc. I think you get the picture.

My question is what makes you think this? Is it because they wear a short skirt with a tank top and make-up? What do you, or would you wear when you go out to a club? Okay you're an adult and they are kids right? Got it.

So if you saw someone dressed that way, just like the dolls, out on the street are you saying that makes THEM a ho, slut, prostitute, etc? Isn't that pre-judging someone? What ever happened to "don't judge a book by it's cover"?

These are just questions that I have. Please do not yell at me. I'm very sensitive! Seriously I just want to know if we label the doll because of how it's dressed does that mean we label people who dress like that?

Yes, it does. Because that's what happens - people judge other people by their appearance.

No, I don't automatically call someone dressed like that trashy or skanky. They are adults, they can wear what they want.

BUT! Someone who's dressing like this is obviously trying to accentuate certain body parts and attract sexual attention. Let's not kid ourselves. If that's what they want to do, fine...but I don't want my daughter looking up to that image. I want my daughter to be proud of her imagination, her kindness, her integrity...not her curves and sex appeal.

It depends where there are dressed in that fashion. An all-night dance club in NYC - maybe - if they had the body to look good in those type of clothes. Anywhere else - inappropriate and yes - I would think "why are they dressed like that."

If someone walked around looking like a Bratz doll I would think they were a ho, slut, etc. Besides, I would be freaked out by anyone who removed their feet to change shoes.

i did'nt post on the original thread but my objection is that they are marketing these dolls to very young girls as their "contemporaries". the clothing that these dolls wear (and makeup) are in no way realistic to what a young girl would/should be wearing. "clubbing" is not something that the focus audience of this product participates in.

and while i agree that you should not prejudge people based on their appearance, the manner of clothing worn by these dolls does reflect a particular lifestyle.

If I saw a women dressed the same as a "Bratz" - Tight clothes, short skirt, excessive make-up, yes - I would wonder what her intentions are.

If you dress slutty, no - it doesn't necassarly make you a slut. But you are certainly looking for the attention!

And that's not the kind of attention I want for my child.

Although perhaps I should try not to do this...when I see girls dressed up "like Bratz dolls" on campus (short short skirts, tiny tiny tops, tons of makeup) I do think that those girls are slutty and "ho"-ish. Some argue that those people are just proud of their bodies, but I think that you can be proud of your body and not be showing half your ****s and your upper thighs. So, yes, when I see ladies dress like that, I do look down on them.

I posted in the orginal thread, (that I hated them) However I while I agree with the assements, I don't use those terms around my DD's.

I would never dress up like a Bratz doll, partly because I am a 34 year old mother, and partly because it is trampy and I wouldn't no mater what age I was. (and this is coming from the women who started the "I want to be a MIL*" thread.") If you don't know, don't ask but MIL* is slang for hot mamma.

There is a difference between hot and sluty!

My 14 year old niece would never wear cothes like them. (she hates them too.) Her words "Bratz are evil, they teach little girls to be bratz. Who wants that?"

As an adult it is one thing to dress like a "Bratz Doll" to go clubbing- you expect to see it there. But to see grown women running around at the grocery store or picking their kids up from school dressed like that I would consider it "trashy" There is a time and a place for everything and dressing sexy with everything hanging out is just not appropriate for everyday wear. You can look sexy without wearing thigh high skirts and low cut shirts.

Everyone is judged to some degree on their appearance-not that it's right but it is true.

I think if you are an adult how you dress is your choice--no problem. But the market for these dolls is not adults it's young girls who are getting the message that dressing older and more provocatively is "cool".

i used to work in an area that had a large number of prostitutes in the surrounding streets. my job called on me to meet with several of them on a regular basis. i always remember a few that would appologize for being late to appointments because they had to "change out of my work clothes". i once asked one of the ladies how she had come to select her particular "work clothes", she said "well, you know-it's all about merchandising, you gotta know how to package your product" . many also dressed very conservativly when they were "off duty", going so far as to "dis" women who wore the style of their "work clothes" in everyday life. they would often say-"i can't believe she's wearing that-i would never be seen in "public" in those clothers"

What makes me think they look little streetwalkers? Could it be clothes, or the makeup? I can't decide:

And if I saw someone on the street dressed like that, then yes, I'd think they looked like a streetwalker or a tramp. They may not be, but if they dress like they are, people will think it, like it or not.

If someone chooses to dress themselves like a ho bag, then they need to expect for people to get that impression. And I don't want my dd thinking that dressing that way is respectable or acceptable, cute or chic.

Hence no Bratz dolls in my house.

I live in NYC and see a lot more people who look Bratzy than I do Barbie and they don't look like Ho's they look fun and fashionable. I think they are a great line

I have no problem with dolls promoting confidence, but I'd also like dolls to promote self respect too. Bratz, in my opinion, send the message that to have confidence you need to sexualize your appearance. There's a difference between dressing to put forward your best appearance, and dressing to display your wares to best advantage.

Maybe I'm just too idealistic When I go out to nightclubs, I fully expect to see people dressed provocatively - we're not there to debate the merits of latin grammar But teaching girls that confidence is dressing revealingly 24/7 as soon as they can wrangle their parents into buying the necessary 'cool' clothes? I haven't seen the cartoon so I can't comment on that.

I do love fashion, perhaps I'm just biased because my tastes are more conservative. As a child of the 80s, I loved my doll from the Jem cartoon series - I suppose those outfits weren't exactly conservative with their short skirts and heavy makeup, so maybe I'm giving too much credit to the influence plastic toys can have on children!

I remember when mini skirts were the big thing and everyone wore them. Check out the Brady Bunch and how the girls dressed for example. So I'm not really bothered by the skirts.

I think that the makeup is a bit much though. Why so much?
