IMPORTANT: Change to Rent/Trade Boards Rules

I dont feel like a 2nd class citizen but do feel "discriminated" in some ways. I truly use the DVC rent to help others. Now that my kids are in different stage in their life (college), there are some years where we cant benefit from our DVC ownership (and I know its hard to believe with all the options) so I feel extremely good about being able to provide the DVC experience to others by renting my points so they can experience it. Thru that process, I have actually made new friends. "Earning" say $2,000 once every 2 years because I rent my points certainly does not change my life (so unlike what some have hinted to.. this is not done for a financial GAIN). So in the end I feel the 50 posts in 6 months might be hard to comply with at times. Its like a catch 22- when I decide to rent my points its because I have a temporary hiatus from Disney so asking for my 50 posts during such time is counterintuitive.

You'd be helping others better by just giving your points away. Why charge them at all?

The way I see it, if the boards want to change the rules let them. They are
the ones who are responsible for it. They are only doing what they believe
is the best for the board. We have no insight on what happens behind the scenes of these boards, but they do. We can only give them our opinions
if they take that into account then more power to the community.

Hats off to the moderators!!!

OK, DVC member since 99, I want to rent/transfer points. Do I have to wait for 6 months or am I misunderstanding the requirements.

Remember that our rules are changing on February 1st, and that those 50 non R/T posts will need to be made during the preceding 6 months, and be spread somewhat throughout those 6 months...we are looking for a trend of participation on the boards during that time, not just a bunch of posts made at the last minute to reach the total. :)

I was wondering if DIS would make it "better" in terms of closing that loophole - basically someone trying to make their 50 non-R/T board by just posting something to other threads to make their total.

Yes, only those who have been members of the DIS for at least 6 months may post offers on the Rent/Trade board. In addition, you must have made at least 50 posts on boards other than the Rent/Trade board.

Reading this thread makes me realize how many people out there use the internet inappropriately. I didn't realize that there are that many people getting ripped off on the rental boards

I'm happy with any changes that make it safer for people who have been around for a while.
Now I'm just sorry that I did not post more in the past as I have been a member since 2007, but tend to just read the boards more than post. I have learned such great information on all of the boards here.
I am now becoming a member of DVC and do not have near the 50 posts needed to become eligible to rent/trade points.
Guess I have some catching up to do!
I feel the same way, I have been a member for over 10 years, and didn't realize I needed to be positing all this time

Wow, after 103 R/T posts, I guess not. Hopefully you'll be able to join in the discussions and share your experiences with all the other members on the boards.

I totally agree with you, quantity has nothing to do with quality

I love Disboards and very often come in to have a look and see whats going on, especially when our next trip is a while away, there is always someone who has something interesting to say.
I don't post very often not that I can't answer someones question occaisionally but to be honest I'm always a bit nervous replying, this may sound strange but as someone who only uses internet for pleasure I always feel a bit of a beginner and am always sure that one of you very knowledgable people out there will have a better answer than me.
I'll try and get a bit more confidence in myself as I would love to be able to contribute more.
Last year I had points to rent and was very pleased to use your service, it was the first and hopefully the last time I'll have to do that even then I was nervous about the wording etcand it took me a month to dare to do it!!
I'm just saying this as maybe I'm not the only one to feel a bit inadequate when it comes to threads etc
Thank you anyway for a great site and I'll keep on "lurking as you put it"

Although I do understand some of the reasoning behind the rule, whether or not some folks have time to post on here as much as others does not mean they are any less worthy, honest or have less integrity than other members IMO. It also does not mean that because some members meet this rule that it gives them some kind of pre-qualification to be good honest people. Just maybe it means they have a lot more time to sit behind a computer all day. Personal references count for more I think.

...Personal references count for more I think.

But for the DIS, it's about what you post that makes those personal references. Without posting, you're not going to post your points for rent. Your posting allows others to get to know you and make a decision based on what and how you post.

If you want to use the DIS to post your points for rent, you're going to have to be an active member of the community. Surely one quality post a week isn't asking much, is it?

Hi there! I just wanted to encourage you to take part in the discussions here more! Not all threads are about knowledge, very often people ask for recommendations and opinions. I always find it very helpful when people tell me why they like something or why they made a certain choice. I am sure that as a DVC member you have many experiences to share about resorts, dining, parks etc! :goodvibes

I guess that I don't really get it!

Unless I post 50 or 100 or whatever you decide is an appropriate number of posts, then I am not a contributing member worthy of the benefit of the rent/trade board. I could care less about renting my points. But that doesn't mean that I may not want to rent in the future, And spare me the you could go elsewhere to rent your points!

I do care about Disney and all things related to my visits. I do care about geting information from people who have "been there" and wish to take the time to enlighten all of us with their opinions. I do care that you have given me the ability to solicit information that I need to enhance my Disney experience.

I do not care to be labeled a "lurker". The dictionary indicates lurkers as evil or having latent threats associated with them. I am only looking for good information. It is estimated that 90% of people who frequent boards do not post. That's a lot of people to alienate based on your 50 quality post solution.

How about a case by case basis. If all post are on the rent/trade board and there are a significant number of them, then address it with that person.

Painting all of us "lurkers" with the same brush is a cop out.

I realize that all of you moderators are volunteering your time and I really appreciate your effort. Please realize that it takes two to complete a post, a poster and a reader.

Mike

Well, that's one. ;)

Seriously though, if someone wants to rent your points, they want to see who you are. If you never post to the DIS, how do they find out? Post your thoughts about the resorts you own at, about your favorite places to eat, about the places you like to trade out for, what you plan to do with the money you get for renting out your points (DCL? Other Disney location? ABD?)

Think of it as any "pay for play" membership. If you want to use your local health club, wouldn't you have to pay them for membership?

Its the same with the Rent/Trade board. But, instead of charging members a fee, the price to use that particular board is 50 posts, in other boards, in the previous 6 months. Once you have done that, then you have "paid" for your entrance and its use.

It doesn't seem to me that asking people to participate in a discussion forum (which is free) is too burdensome in order to get a no cost benefit of potential value to them (rental posting). In effect they want free 'advertising' of their available points... Or alternatively, in order to advertise your points here, you have to 'pay' by posting. :upsidedow Seems like a pretty easy trade to make, especially since doing either is totally voluntary!
