Effective immediately, Reservation for Rent threads will require that the poster has been a member of the DIS for at least 6 months and has no fewer than 50 contributory posts on boards other than the Rent/Trade board.

The original intent of the Rent/Trade board was to create a place where the DIS DVC Community could rent reservations that they could not use and also rent out additional points. Increasingly, we've seen posters create a DIS account solely for the purpose of posting existing reservations on the Rent/Trade board, ignoring our online community. The moderators feel this change will further limit the speculative rental owners, while at the same time creating some board history on them. This way potential renters can check previous posts, getting a general feel for their posting style. The Rent/Trade mods have been discussing this change for several months.

Please note that this affects Reservation For Rent thread submissions only.

EDIT: Remember that there have been additional changes to R/T posting rules since this thread was initially posted, and there are changes coming on February 1, 2011. You may continue to discuss those changes here.

excellent decision :thumbsup2

hopefully, this will help make the process somewhat safer for renters by weeding out fly-by-nighters.
imho, this helps bring the entire DIS back to its roots as a "community" also.

thanks!

I'm happy with any changes that make it safer for people who have been around for a while.
Now I'm just sorry that I did not post more in the past as I have been a member since 2007, but tend to just read the boards more than post. I have learned such great information on all of the boards here.
I am now becoming a member of DVC and do not have near the 50 posts needed to become eligible to rent/trade points.
Guess I have some catching up to do!

Sounds like a good idea to me! :thumbsup2 Glad the change was made, fly by nighters we don't contribute do seem more "dangers" for prospective renters...

Yea! It is difficult to determine the best way to keep this feature available but make sure it will be used as designed; I think you've come up with a very valid requirement. Over the last 8 years I used this board to rent out some points a couple of times and have had good experiences with great renters.

Thank you!

I agree that the changes to the rent/trade board are a positive thing. I have used the rental board on several occassions and appreciate that the option is available. Thanks for keeping the rent/trade board available!! :)

I agree.

Thanks!

Sounds like a good idea. Do you think I have enough posts to qualify?;):rotfl:

I LOVE IT! I always searched the "for rent" posters prev posts and was concerned. THIS IS AWESOME!

This is a plus IMHO! Thanks for keeping things running smoothly!

Hollybud68 - you can still use the Rent/Trade Board to rent/trade points. You don't need 50 posts to use most features of that board.

The 50 post requirement is only for those who want to offer a confirmed reservation for rent. (They already made a reservation and are looking for a renter).

You don't need 50 posts to offer your points for rent. Usde the R/T Board to help you find a renter and then make the reservation based on the dates the renter desires.

You can also offer to transfer points to another member or ask for a transfer of points from another member without having 50 posts.

And of course, we hope you will continue to post on Ops, Planning & Mouse, too. Congrats on becoming a member! :)

I applaud this move.:thumbsup2 I am curious as to why it was made now? Have there been any problems?

As mentioned in the first post, the R/T board was created for the benefit of the DIS DVC community. Unfortunately there are quite a few people who join the DIS for the sole purpose of renting existing DVC reservations on the R/T board. They don't participate on any other boards here, not even the DVC boards, to share their knowledge of Disney and DVC. This was not in keeping with the spirit of the R/T board and we decided to do something about it.

Why now? Actually we would have done it earlier but it has taken us a while to figure out the right balance between the criteria we will use to qualify someone to post a Reservation for Rent thread and the extra work required of the moderators, who as you probably know are all volunteers.
