No, pretty bad. The mayor is just having a meltdown that I don't even know if I can understand, based on what he must be seeing, and the governer seems like a complete twit. But I've always thought you could rely on the federal government when all else fails. And now we know we can't.

The state and local government didn't communicate their needs affectively. How can the federal goverment help if you don't tell them what you need. The mayor and governor finally told F.G what they need and now the are receiving the help.
Personally, I'm also extemly upset at the mayor and governor of LA. They forgot about some hospitals. How can you forget them??

We are letting old people, sick people, poor people, and babies die like dogs. As far as I'm concerned, there is no debate. People that couldn't just jump in their minivan and drive to the Ramada in Houston.

I'm thorougly disgusted with anyone who makes excuses for him.

In all honesty, this is ridiculous. It accomplishes nothing, but if you really want to get into it...look to the local and state goverment.

The local and state government needs to be removed or replaced ....and now. The Governor of LA is positively lost. She is not the person for this job. The mayor, he is just a nightmare.

The local government should have been prepared to respond immediately. And they weren't. The Governor has the ability to call up the National Guard. She could have had thousands of troops in place....she didn't.

You all want to blame the president for everything. The Federal goverment is saving thousands of people. The state of Louisiana and the Mayor of NO are saving....none. The mayor is actually making things worse, much worse. He's making it very clear that he's not in control of anything.

While I understand that some of the footage today is incredibly upsetting, we have to keep this thing in perspective. This is a catastrophe that is unprecedented in our nation. We have two disasters that have happened simultaneously. A horrific blow to the gulf coast, and a city that is literally underwater. This is off the scale....occurring over hundreds of square miles.

On top of all of that you have a small number of thugs who have taken to the streets to loot (not food...serious looting) and have taken to shooting police officers and rescue helicopters. News organizations have hired armed protection for their reporters. That's how scary the situation is. The local government knew the situation was getting out of control and they did *nothing*.

Local authorites told the overflow people to go to that convention center...there wasn't one NO police officer there. Not one. How can that be? The Mayor is sending out SOS distress calls when he should be sending in his resignation. "Dear People of New Orleans, I'm not the guy for this job."

I believe that the Feds didn't even know about the situation over at the convention center until that footage was aired today. And tonight, the situation is already improving. Army helicopters have been in dropping off food and water....probably fearing for their own lives in the process.

I just think that knocking the president and the federal government is being short-sighted and reactionary instead of really and truly looking at the situation with a clear (and bipartisan) head....

Excellent post!!

Love your post!! I agree 100%.

The National Guard is doing a wonderful job; it is the local yokels who are screwing things up. They need to be fired!!!!

Oh thanks, now I'm going to have nightmares tonight just imagining a Jeb campaign. :guilty:

Here in Florida, we've had to live through that reality...three times (twice successful). Please, God, let the Bush dynasty be OVER....

yes as a matter of fact, please tell me why you said that.

I don't care what the local government has screwed up, our federal government is leaving all those people without water, food and medicine. People are dying and being left in the streets. Tell me how we could letting those people suffer and die like that.

I think I'm just going to copy and paste your post on every thread concerning the hurricane that also bashes the President. Excellent, excellent post.

Like you said, this is something unprecedented for our country. The local government failed its people (very, very unfortunate) and the federal government will most certainly help.

We're dealing with tens of thousands of people here. I thoroughly understand the frustration people are experiencing at this point, but the folks that are politicizing this are aggravating me to no end this evening :crazy2: .

Of course we're watching.

You're just simply uninformed about the way local, state and federal governments have always worked to coordinate natural disaster relief efforts.

Are you people watching the news at all??

I'm watching and reading the news when I can. I am also talking to people from LA, MS and AL. I am their neighbor and some have come here for shelter. The poeple from LA are upset at the local and state government. I have heard their stories and cried with them.

AL is getting back on thier feet and MS is slowly moving that way. Most of the people from MS are heading home this week and AL is just 50 miles so they come and go.

You are aware that the President can't send in troops, federal aid, etc, until it is requested from the governor of the state...aren't you?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy with the federal response either. But the local response in NOLA from the beginning has been abysmal. And that is not the fault of the federal government. It wasn't the feds that sent those people to the Superdome and the convention center, and then left them there. That was local government.

STANDING OVATION FOR DVC GIRL!!!

THANK YOU!!

Where is NO's responsibility in this matter - better yet - where is the responsibility of the people who are stranded in NO - weren't they told to evacuate - weren't they told - this could destroy our city - they didn't care and efforts had to be used to rescue them instead of getting the aid needed!

I totally understand that some of them did not have the money to leave - so again I blame NO for not filling up buses and getting people out -

NO has known for YEARS that this could happen - did they run drills? Did they have a plan in place?

It is NOT the federal governments responsibility to make sure each city has emergency plans in place - the federal government has emergency response teams in place - but they need cooperation and coordination from the local government and they have gotten crap from NO

from ALL reports I have seen there are National Guards standing around not knowing what to do - why would the govt send more when NO isn't using who they have

we have the manpower and the money to be here and in Iraq! There is such a MAJOR lack of info due to power outages and trying to figure out where the needs are that the government needs the local govt to tell them what they need first

George Bush handled 911 so well - but everyone knows it was Rudy Guiliani who truly brought our country through that - if NO had a strong coherent local government that had planned for this situation - things would look VERY different right now!!

They are on the ground now. And more are coming. The situation will now get under control. Meanwhile, the FIRST responders, the Mayor and the Governor, continue to wring their hands and cry.
