Immigration.

I don't care who comes here but as long as they learn english and come in legally, its fine.
When they live here permanantly they have to learn english, and yet most of then don't care thinking they can go through the rest of their lives using hand gestures and hoping others speaking that language, or someone who doesn't recognizes their hand gestures and be done with it!
Ah, sorry....rant. :guilty:

This country was built by immigrants. No one here can say that they're pure blooded american. yeah, sure, I'm like 1/8 native alaskan, but I'm 7/8 everything else. I don't believe that anyone should be denied entry to our country, but I believe they should be....encouraged to become legal citizens.

The US citizenship test costs $675.00. Thats wrong. It should be free. It should be easier to become a citizen. A lot of the immigrants come over with the clothes on their back. They are paid less than minimum wage, and send most of it back to their families in Mexico. How are they supposed to get that kind of money?

The fence is hands down the STUPIDEST idea I've EVER seen.

About their language. I would never ask someone to turn their back on their heritage. Spanish is their culture. I was recently in a nasty debate about making a rule saying the pledge of allegiance only said in English. Thats wrong. If someone cares enough about my country to WANT to be here, to FIGHT to be here, and then once they're here, to pledge their allegiance to MY flag, I don't care what language they're saying it in. Its that they're saying it that matters.

Someone needs to speak english to live in this country, for their own good. and most of them will learn it. they have to, to take the test. It doesn't bother me if someone is speaking spanish. I'm not that nosey to care what they're talking about. But Life here is going to be 100 times harder for someone who doesn't understand and speak english.

In my opinion, if the parent is not a citizen, the child shouldn't be a citizen until the parents become one.

this is my problem.

my mother is not an american citizen.

however, she is living here legally from spain with a green card.
she passed the citizenship test, but chooses not to be loyal to one and only one country,
so she is loyal to both with a green card.

my friend is in the same boat as her mother is from ireland.
her mother wants to stay loyal to both countries,so she lives here legally with a green card.

so,i shouldn't be a citizen because my parent isn't a citizen?
and my friend shouldn't be a citizen because her mother is not?

if the parents are illegal immigrants, than i totally understand.
but if not, that is a very wrong approach.

maybe,i'm taking this the wrong way,i don't know.
but just specify it better for me please?

i completely agree with your post.

I Canada we have a different type of immigration problem.

We have people coming over from India, and alot of other South Asian countries.

Now I take pride that Canada is a multi-cultural nation. we are very tolerant of people's beliefs and cultures. We celebrate all sorts of different holidays in school.

We recognize and respect other cultures, we don't really have the whole "melting pot" thing, we are more of a tossed salad? maybe.
I am all for diversity and multiculturalism in Canada.

But the thing that is starting to bother me now, is that South Asian immigrants are starting to take advantage. Recently in the news, there has been alot of talk about South Asian immigrants complaining that there are no teachers that speak (insert south asian language here...there are alot of them! heh) and that there are no employers that speak those languages as well.

I personally think, if you are going to immigrate to an english speaking country, it should be a priority for you to learn english. We let them follow their own religions, we have even built them temples and other places of worship. We have integrated their culture and religion into our school systems. But I really don't think it's right for them to now start demanding their own schools and such.

That, to me, is encouraging segregation.
And that's my 2 cents.

and about the american-mexican issue.
i pretty much agree with shelby. it's difficult for them to find the money to be able to come legal immigrants. They are coming to your country to escape the harshness of their own. I think that it should be easier and less expensive for them to become legal immigrants.

There are many different immigrants, people from Mexico are just one country. I'm not flaming at specific groups of people, just those in general who come here without legal citizenship and no knowledge whatsoever of the English language.

If they come legally thats fine. we need to start deporting illegals. and make English our official language. Also if the Illegals from Mexico( not trying to be offensive) where the majority come from, have such great skills that we should take advantage of, why isn't mexicos economy better or more advanced than it is?

because they don't..... they work in nurseries and factories. the lawyers and policemen aren't whats coming over, its the poverty stricken part of their society.

^::yes:: It doesn't mean they all are living in poverty.

no, not all of them are, but most are.

Sure, some people come over with the intentions of taking advantage of our system, but most don't. Most honestly want to be here.

I agree with that.
Becoming a legal citizen, is expensive. There is more costs than just that test, and can you imagine if you were turned down? All that money, possibly money that you don't have, gone down the drain.

I cannot legally move to the US, because I would be 'stealing your jobs' and unless there is a job there that has already been made for me, I cannot move.

I hate it when people speak Spanish in public and in classrooms. It's RUDE.

See, that really bugs me. Unless you mean public as in making announcements or relaying information to people in general, it's not for anyone to decide what language be used in private conversation. If people want to speak Spanish amongst themselves, let them. It's not a big deal. I'm not saying that speaking non-English languages exclusively should be allowed, but being insulted or threatened by just hearing another language... it doesn't make sense. At all. :\

I agree very much with what Sparx said, (particularly about the fence. Ugh.) and she put it way better than I could.

Over here there was this huge argument that was taken to court about billboards here in Spanish. Not sure what their conclusion was but we still have more Spanish billboards here than English ones.

What I meant was that if an illegal immigrant were to come here and have a child (which kind of forces the government into a trap, because the parent isn't a citizen, but the child is, so they can't deport them), the child shouldn't be a citizen and should be deported along with the parent if they are found out.

If they come here legally, that's totally OK, and the child should be a citizen.

For English, press 1. For Spanish, press 2.

GRRRR. I HATE that. It's America. We speak English. Americans can't go to Mexico and get special treatment, so why should Mexicans get it here? I'm completely okay with it if it's done legally, but if it's illegal, forget it. No way. I was at a McDonalds in Washington, DC the other day, and I couldn't even understand the cashier. I was just like RAWR. You don't see Americans illegally going to Mexico and getting jobs there, so why should they do that to us? And again, if it's legal, that's one thing. It's OKAY. But if they hop the border, and don't want to do it our way, they are not welcome.

okay.
i see what you meant.

but i don't particually agree.
it isn't the childs fault that there parents were illegal immigrants and that they were born in this country.
that child shouldn't be deported.
in no way were they at fault.
