Immigration Bill Defeated

This was a classic example of where politics are in our country. This was a bi-partisan attempt to solve this very large problem. Both sides made concessions and those concessions are what killed the bill. We have become so polarized in this country that I can't see how this issue will ever be cleared up.

While I don't think this billw as perfect, I do think it got as close as I have seen. There were controls on the amnesty, there was a plan to allow people to earn a green card in the future, and there was more money for border patrol. I don't see where this bill could be approved.

It wasnt a great bill ,but I have to agree something needs to be done. For those saying just follow the current laws, secure the border, etc., funding for those projects need to be secured. Some sort of bill addressing it needs to be passed, you can't just say hurrah! we won! We are right back where we started.

Being back where we started; building the fence and enforcing the law is not a bad place to be. It just needs to get done. We don't need more laws because Local, State and Federal governments are not enforcing the law. We need to have the law enforced. Jodi Rell, Gov. Ct. killed a bill that would allow in state tuition for illegal aliens. Good. Its another step in the right direction.

That's been my point all along. I agree with most of the folks here-I want illegals deported and the businesses that have been hiring them fined and/or jailed-BUT IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. We have to wake up and realize that tough immigration laws do not benefit politicians and they are NOT going to enact them. There has to be compromise and concessions on both sides to get something better than the status quo. On that, I agree with the President-we have unofficial amnesty now. They're all here, there are more coming and the existing laws are not being enforced.

Not everyone who actually lives there wants a fence in their backyard as much as they want stricter immigration laws.

I'm glad. This bill was not the answer.

I would like to see the borders secured and current laws enforced before anything else.
::yes::

Better to do nothing than pass that bill.

We cannot just "ship them back" when they have children born here unless we change that law too.
The kids can still keep their US citizenship, buy just grow up in another country. Just like kids born in the military can. My friend was born in Panama to an American man and a British women. He spend his early years there. The parents can also leave the kids with realtives who can stay in the US. It would be their decision.

BTW I want to change the law to - only kids born in this country of parent(s) who are here legally will be given citizenship.

well if they had, we wouldn't be here to have the discussion so there is more then one way to look at it...

Nah, there probably would have been Chief Ted Kennedy who said that the White Europeans just want to come to America and do the jobs that Native Americans don't want to do, plant corn, hunt buffalo, build teepees. Then he would have sold Manhattan for approximately $29 and the rest is history.

If they don't want a fence in their back yard then they should MOVE! This is a clear cut example for the justification of eminent domain. You can't enforce stricter immigration laws if you can't seal the border.

That's a great solutio with a preexisting precedent. :thumbsup2

So are you saying we have funding to build the fence, hire the border guards needed and any additional manpower needed?

I was under the impression that we didnt.

When was it authorized?

I can't believe people actually think that shipping 12 million illegal immigrants out of the country is a good thing and won't have tremendous negative ramifications, both here and abroad.

I undestand they're illegal, and I don't want amnesty, but there is no way that just shipping them out would solve anything. I can't even begin to list the amount of problems that would occur because of this.

I agree. It is not black and white. We cannot just "ship them back" when they have children born here unless we change that law too.

Actually parents of children born in the US can and are deported.

That child will always be considered US citizen but that does not all of a sudden make the parents legal.

So what do we do to stop the otehr 5-10 million illegals from entering the country. Illegal immigration isn't just coming from Mexico. That's just the easy target for people to attach themselves to. 50% of the 10-20 million illegal immigrants are from Mexico.

Not trying to be rude but....

Please don't call our Border Patrol- border guards. They are Federal Agents. The correct ways to call them are Border Patrol Agents or BPA's. Many of them kinda don't like to get called guards. LOL My dh is one of them.

Tighten ALL of the borders. Find and arrest those that do not leave when their visas expire. If "only" 50% are from Mexico, that is still a LOT of people. Deny funding to cities and states that declare themselves "sanctuary" cities and states. When there is no "pay off" for breaking the law, there will be fewer law breakers.

Thank your DH for the job he is doing. It is much appreciated.

Whenever I hear someone say "Sanctuary" city all I can think of is the Hunchback of Notre Dame....lol

Ok Do we have the funding for more Border Patrol Agents then?

BTW, you misspelled Patrol, so maybe you can forgive my guards.

Wow, I thought there was actually going to be a mature, intelligent, politician discussion on the Community Board. Then, here we go again. I should have known better. :sad2:
