Immigrant help!!!!

All very interesting and reminding me to put in for the Green Card lottery which is run each year.

DH & my goal is not to migrate to the USA to bludge, but instead as a possiblity of moving so we could then support our dd while she did undergraduate or post-graduate study at a USA university.

And btw at that time we would not be bludgers, but travelling as a semi retired university professor, and a government accountant with qualifications similar to your CPA. No plans to be working in a coffee shop being paid 'under the table' (especially since most of my working life has been as a tax collector :rotfl:)

I love the word "bludge".

Good luck in the lottery.

He has no profession.....just did odd jobs in the summer. He would love to come here and get an opportunity and why not, if he is a hard worker he should be allowed that right. He could replace a bum out there mooching off of our tax dollars. :sad2:

Huh? Replace a bum?

Just to distinguish between citizens and green card holders.... both are legal. You don't have to be a citizen to work here, stay here, play here, etc. Legal immigrants/non-citizens pay taxes same as everyone else. The only difference is they cannot vote or serve on jury duty. :)

I'm not sure why you quoted me? I was answering her He has a right rant.

Yes green card holders are here legally and if he wants to get on the list and come legally when it is his turn great, welcome but she claims just because he wants to he has a right to do so and to do so now, and I'm sorry but it doesn't work that way especially for a non skilled only working summer person.

Also there are plenty of illegals already here that are taking advantage of federal programs.

Exactly my point. Allow someone who wants to come here to get a job and create a better life for themself rather than a freeloader who leaches off our tax money and sits on their lazy behind all day (and you all know there are PLENTY of them). I have a BIG problem with that! I did not ask for anyone's approval here just some friendly advice. Thank you to those who did offer advice and no thank you to those of you who wanted to pick a fight.

I don't think anyone wanted to pick a fight. They were simply responding to what you said. If you don't want passionate or strong answers, don't make such passionate, strong statements.

ETA: Weird. I thought I was quoting the OP when she said people were picking fights with her.

Actually, it is part of the original topic. Depending on what (or if) he is currently doing for work, his options differ (as pointed out by a few PPs, there are a couple of different visa options). So, in order to answer your question, it is a valid question. As is, by the way, what country he is from (as there are different rules/quotas) for different countries.

I've never heard "replace a bum out there mooching off of our tax dollars" as a figure of speech before :confused3

Let me explain myself.....(not that I have to). What I meant was......here he is a hard working guy who would like the opportunity to come here and see if he could make a better life for himself. While you feel that is not ok with you.....is it ok to have another foreigner or even a low life american sitting on their behind all day freeloading??? This country is pathetic.....IMHO. I have been trying to convince him to stay in his European country, he is much better off.

If you don't like it, you can work to change it or go visit your friend and try to get work in his country.

People who apply for a Green Card are without any exemption people who work hard and who have skills to get a decent job and not fumbling around to earn black money.I'm a forum member on a Green Card board and those that participate invest long years of work into this. They come with skills and money.

And yes we see hundreds of this young people asking these kind of questions on this board. They think they just can buy a ticket and the life of the free will fall into there laps.
As soon as they get told how hard it is to get into the US and how much effort it takes, all at a sudden all these " hard working" guys mostly get very nasty because those who know tell them the truth.

Many of the answers come from those that have a legal Green Card and burnt all the bridges behind them and they all have the same credo "it is not easy".

I quoted you because you were "ranting" about his not being a citizen and said he should therefore should stay home. ;) You said:

he isn't a citizen of the US he has no right to anything out country has to offer!!!

Where did I ever say it was not okay with me?

My point was that the country he is from and his occupation are germane to the discussion. Not attacks on your (or him). For example, teskak mentioned the Green Card Lottery. Depending on what country someone is from, they may, or may not, be eligible for the lottery. Their occupation may also make them ineligible. So, that option is available to everyone. If you want suggestions on helping someone immigrate, the people giving you advice need pertinent details.

And, for the record, I don't consider someone who works 3 months of the year to be "hard working" - your definition, of course, may differ.

Hey.....thanks for the compliment. I am pushing 40 and have a husband, a successful business and am a Mom to 2 kids. His Country's economy is suffering as well and it is very hard to find a decent job there, which is why he thought of coming here (he also has family here). I had no idea what he had to go thru to come here and most of you have answered my question. I now know that it will be VERY difficult, or impossible. Guess he will only visit. How are all the Mexicans and Russians doing it???

I never said he ONLY works 3 months a year. What I said was that he did odd jobs over the summer. The business he owned went under due to lack of tourism, so once he lost it in the spring he got a summer job. The summer is their tourist season so the jobs are plenty. Because of his loss of business he now needs to figure something out for his near future. I also wanted to correct that "he has no skills", I never said that, what I said is that he has no Profession. His has plenty of skills......

Actually you said he JUST did odds jobs in the summer. JUST and ONLY are generally considered to mean the same thing.

You also contradict yourself - due to lack of tourism, he lost his business, yet there were plenty of jobs due to tourism??

Anyway, it looks like you've got all of the help that you can get (since people don't have the needed details for more help), so I'm out.

From what you said previously it doesn't seem like he is hard working. So do remember saying he does occasional odd jobs, right?

Listen.....some of you people are blowing this way out of proportion. JUST meaning "just this summer". He lost his business due to lack of tourism is right. Having business only in the summer months was not enough to sustain the business for the whole year. I do not feel the need to give out any of his personal info, all I wanted to know was......"can he come here and apply for a job temporarily".

I never said you were young although it could be a compliment :rotfl2:
I just stated that I see many YOUNG PEOPLE asking the same question.

My family is also from Europe, and we still have very close ties to the family "back home". From experience, I know that it is very hard to enter this country legally and receive a Green Card, because the country we are from is not considered Communist anymore, so living there is no longer considered a hardship nor is oppression a problem. Wasn't always like that!

What my brother did with his friends, many years ago, was have them come and visit, then they would stay and work for cash either in cleaning jobs or as yard labourers. Eventually, the friends either fell in love and married here, or went back to Europe after saving their money, and provided better lives for their families there. I do not condone what my brother did, I never did this with my friends, but I will say the jobs these guys did were not jobs that American citizens were lining up to take, so no worries about them taking jobs from Americans in that respect! Yet I do not condone this, just making that clear.

My own parents were not accepted into America when they first fled their home country during Communism. America had fulfilled its quota of people from my country, but Canada accepted my parents. Eventually, through a job transfer, my father did bring us to America, which back in the 60's was still the "land where streets are paved in gold". And yes, family back home really did believe our streets here were paved in gold back in the 60's.

I will say this, that due to American shows being broadcast in Europe, many former Eastern block citizens do have a distorted view of the riches that are here in America. Members of my family that have come for a visit (and not worked, just visited! :) ), have said that in the last 10 years, what we have here in America is becoming available to them, too. Sure, they have to work for it, but so do we in the States. I do not find the urge to come and live in America as desirous now as it was even 20 years ago, and living in America is not the status symbol it once was for the people in my home country. Instead, Australia and Skandinavia and now where everyone wants to move to!

Hey, I would love to have a home in Australia too! Summer here in the States, winter in Australia! Eh, too bad Disney would be so far away.

I am sorry, lukenick1, I just don't think your friend is going to be able to legally make it in this country unless he can prove oppression in his home country. Not sure if Canada is more open to immigration, but that is always a thought.

Just hooking up to your comment I know that Canada is desperately seeking farmers and truck drivers.

Just to show you how difficult it is to enter the US please look at this page http://www.help-jelte.nl/therapie-foto.html.This child was refused to enter the states for months although he only came for a special treatment and his parents had enough money to pay for the treatment lodging and food. After out prime minister requested a special visa he was granted entrance for half a year.
This boy is so sick the only way to travel was per cargo ship witch took almost twee weeks because the regular air companies refused to transport him due to a high risk.
