Immigrant help!!!!

He has no profession.....just did odd jobs in the summer. He would love to come here and get an opportunity and why not, if he is a hard worker he should be allowed that right. He could replace a bum out there mooching off of our tax dollars. :sad2:

Oh boy!!! where do I start......

first off RIGHT what right? he isn't a citizen of the US he has no right to anything out country has to offer!!! He has the right to what ever his country offers him nothing in our country. He can work hard in his own country.

He would love to come here, yey I guess he would along with millions of others in countries that aren't as great as the USA!

"and why not" the why not is he ISN'T a citizen that is why not. Why doesn't he work hard and go to school in the country he is a citizen in.

And why would he not be mooching off our tax dollars anymore than someone else here? You say he has no skills or education, do you think he is going to get off the plane and find a job instantly with benefits? If it was that easy do you think the unemployment rate would be as high as it is now?
we would have so many working people getting help with medical benefits and free lunches for their kids?

Sorry we are a country not a homeless shelter. bring something to offer us or stay in your own country and work to make it as great as the USA.

A lot of people on this thread are blowing things out of proportion - I'm a permenant resident here from England and my dad is an immigration lawyer, so I'll try to give you accurate information!

Depending on the European country he comes from, he may be able to come on the visa waiver program - this basically means he just comes over with no visa, how people come on vacation to the US. He can stay for 90 days, and if he goes home late, he won't be thrown in prison :rolleyes1 - but he will be forced to leave the country, and he'll be on the radar for USCIS...this could potentially decrease job chances for the future. As people said, you can hop over to Mexico, turn round and come back and reset the 90 days - but if he's interested in being here long term, this isn't smart, it looks suspicious.

If he wants to come here to work, his best options are temporary work visa such as a J visa or an H visa. I originally came over on a J-1 visa sponsered by Disney to do the International College Program. An H visa is another temporary work visa, although I know a lot of these were put on hold for a while with the economy the way it was. Your friend can search the internet, there are quite a few companies that will sponser temporary work visas - the jobs are usually basic, minimum wage positions but it would give him an idea of what it's like to live and work in the US so he can see if he likes it.

If he decides he wants to be here on a more permenant basis, that's when it gets difficult. It costs companies a lot of money to sponser a green card so you have to be invalauble to them - it doesn't happen often.

Thank you.....of course it's expected on these message boards.

Ok my 2c based on actual facts there are three kinds of work visas
J- Like in the college programs
L1- For highly skilled professionls who need to temporarily come for a small duration to help at some office here
H1- Long term non immigrant visa which most immigrant workers use.

Tourist visa is B1/B2 you cant get a social security number on that and hence any legit company will not hire him on that visa. For all the other work permit visas the company has to show that they dont have a qualified worker here to do that exact job and hence they need some foreign national. Even then each visa has a quota which gets over as soon as it opens in april each year. So legally unless he has 16 years education + a marketable skill which is unique he will not get a work permit.

Rest is on your friend if he wants to go the legal way or find a immigrant owned coffee store or restaurant where he can work out of the books, be paid less than the legal counterparts working the same job and be in constant fear of getting caught. There is also a lot of exploitation in such circumstances. So its up to your friend to decide if its worth it.

Also if you are sponsoring his visitor visa then you will be responsible if he disappears or does not leave on time. Nothing major but you come on the radar of your local law enforcement so make sure you know what you are getting into.

How, exactly, would he "replace a bum out there mooching off of our tax dollars"? Is it some sort of new exchange program? Unless he becomes "a bum out there mooching off of our tax dollars", he isn't replacing one. If anything, he is making it harder for said bum to get a job (since your friend has taken away a job).

What was he doing over the other 9 months of the year (you say he only worked over the summers)? Living off the tax dollars of whatever country he is currently living?

It was a figure of speech not meant "literally".
As far as I know the country he is from (which will remain private) does not offer "welfare". It is really no one's business how he supported himself the remainder of the year, including mine. That was not the original topic of this thread.

all of the lifeguards at our pools around here are Eastern Europeans that are only here to work as lifeguards for the summer, then they go home.... :confused3

Actually, it is part of the original topic. Depending on what (or if) he is currently doing for work, his options differ (as pointed out by a few PPs, there are a couple of different visa options). So, in order to answer your question, it is a valid question. As is, by the way, what country he is from (as there are different rules/quotas) for different countries.

I've never heard "replace a bum out there mooching off of our tax dollars" as a figure of speech before :confused3

No chance that he will get a permit or visa. The rules are very very strict and yes that is a good thing. He may visit you for 3 months and if he leaves one day to late he will find himself back in a prison.
Ummm, did the OP say that this person was currently in prison or had previously been in prison?

(It should be noted that being in the country 'illegally' is a misdemeanor that rarely (never?) would result in 'prison'.)

Wouldn't they rather the person just leave the US?? Why would the US want to pay for the person to be in prison, if they could just ship them back to wherever they came from.

I suppose, if somone fought/defied a deportation order they might end up in prison?

Tell your friend the first thing he has to do is get a CC. He or she will even need it just for making an appointment for his visa. Talking over the phone without a valid cc to the American embassy is not possible.

Sorry......:confused3 what's a CC???

How would he get a job here????

He would need a company to offer him a job and offer to sponsor him. They just don't give work visas to anyone who asks. In this economy it is going to be hard to find that unless he has a very unique set of skills.

There are tons of people currently out of work. Why would be want a foreigner to come here and take a job from someone who needs it? Also there are plenty of illegals already here that are taking advantage of federal programs. Tell him to marry an American. That's what my friend's husband did.

Exactly my point. Allow someone who wants to come here to get a job and create a better life for themself rather than a freeloader who leaches off our tax money and sits on their lazy behind all day (and you all know there are PLENTY of them). I have a BIG problem with that! I did not ask for anyone's approval here just some friendly advice. Thank you to those who did offer advice and no thank you to those of you who wanted to pick a fight.

We as an European country tried it and ended up with on a population of 16 millions we now have 1,6 million foreigners who practical
don't work and leach on public money. We ended up paying 52% income tax. Just letting people come into a country is just wrong and in the long run only will create huge huge problems.
I will not point out fingers to certain groups but we ended up by serving the special food they eat as main food in our prisons.
Sorry you didn't got the answers you liked.

Just to distinguish between citizens and green card holders.... both are legal. You don't have to be a citizen to work here, stay here, play here, etc. Legal immigrants/non-citizens pay taxes same as everyone else. The only difference is they cannot vote or serve on jury duty. :)

All very interesting and reminding me to put in for the Green Card lottery which is run each year.

DH & my goal is not to migrate to the USA to bludge, but instead as a possiblity of moving so we could then support our dd while she did undergraduate or post-graduate study at a USA university.

And btw at that time we would not be bludgers, but travelling as a semi retired university professor, and a government accountant with qualifications similar to your CPA. No plans to be working in a coffee shop being paid 'under the table' (especially since most of my working life has been as a tax collector :rotfl:)
