John was my favorite Beatle, and I truly mourned when he died. I don't recall ever before or ever since feeling so emotionally shook up after learning of a celebrity death. Maybe it was because of the senseless way he died, but I still get tears in my eyes thinking of that day.

Lennon's Killer Denied Parole Again

Mark David Chapman found out Wednesday that he'll have to serve at least two more years in prison for killing former Beatle John Lennon.

That's because the New York State Parole Board Wednesday denied Chapman his second request for parole. His first request was denied two years ago, and he won't have another chance for parole until 2004.

Chapman was immediately apprehended and admitted to shooting Lennon outside his New York apartment building on Dec. 8, 1980. The singer-songwriter was 40.

Chapman has been serving time in New York's Attica prison since 1980. He was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for the crime.

The parole board says letting Chapman out now would "deprecate the seriousness" of the crime.

The board noted that Chapman has shown "acceptable" behavior in prison -- but that doesn't guarantee he won't be a threat to society.

His first bid for parole came in 2000, where he argued that he was no longer a danger to society and had overcome the psychological problems that led to Lennon's assassination, reported the British Broadcasting Corp. online. Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, said however that she'd feel threatened if Chapman was set free.

The board sent Chapman a written statement -- noting that he admitted planning the murder for several months because he believed Lennon was a hyprocrite living a decadent lifestyle.

Chapman himself said during his first parole hearing two years ago he didn't deserve to be set free -- saying "there's no way you can make up for" killing someone.

Lennon would have turned 62 Wednesday.
