I posted the other day about my DD3 being sick. She had to deal with fevers. The other night it briefly went up to 104.9. I got it done rather quickly. Since then she's mentioned that her ears are bothering her a little bit when she lies down. Now today I noticed that she hasn't been able to hear everything I've said to her. Now I"m freaking out wondering if that high fever could have caused hearing loss OR if it's just something minor as in her ears are all stuffed up/filled with fluid.

I'm sitting here shaking I just feel like I'm on the verge of a breakdown. Both our kids have been sick for at least 4 or 5 days, I've barely slept and now this. I'm scared to death!!

Sorry your child is sick. I doubt the fever caused hearing loss. She probably is just congested which caused the eustachian tubes to block which can cause her hearing to be muffled.

If fever persists and she complains of ear pain, she might have an ear infection.

Why don't you bring her into the doctor just to ease your mind?

Sounds like an ear infection to me, especially if there's pain. My friends DS had an ear infection a few weeks ago and had 105° fever. I would take her to the Dr., I hope everything's okay.

Don't panic - it sounds like an ear infection. :)

I had an ear infection in November. It was extremely painful. I thought my eardrum was going to explode. Have you called the dr. yet?

Try not to panic. All three of my kids had problems with their hearing when they had ear infections. Can you get her in to see the doctor tomorrow?

I would call the Dr & bring her to the ER if its after hours, they may be able to give her some meds to make her feel better & calm you down.

We just went through a broken bone w/ my DD, she is running around as usual despite it, & Im watching my gray hairs grow in:rolleyes:

Good luck:grouphug:

Please don't mess around with the high fever- last Friday night, my precious son suffered a near fatal seizure in the bath tub. :sad1: He's been really sick, and his fever was very high. Thank God the drain in my tub is broken and the tub does not hold water, as he is almost 8 years old and bathes by himself. I went in to check on him after 3 or so minutes and he was on his back in the tub, having a horrible seizure. I thought he had ingested water, so I can't even explain the next steps I took. I remember calling 911, attempting to administer CPR, mouth to mouth, etc, but mostly I remember the screaming :sad1:

The good news is he is OK, and now on medicine since my DH has epilepsy. I feel so frightened whenever my kids have fever.

Yes - i agree, please take her to be checked out, but don't panic. Most likely it is congestion of some sort that is blocking her up, as the many other posters have suggested.

Please let us know how she (and you!) makes out at the doctor's office/ER/clinic - there's nothing like "Mom Guilt" to wear you out!

Believe it or not, a 104 fever is not dangerously high in children. Probably just an ear infection, and since she doesn't seem to be in too much pain, I'd call the pediatrician in the morning. 80% of ear infections are viral, and don't respond to antibiotics anyway.

I'm lucky - my kids were always sick when they were infants and toddlers - now that they're preschool/school age, they are much healthier, and since I've been through every virus under the sun, I don't worry when they're sick.

Sounds like an ear infection to me, too. Our ped says to call them immediately if the child's temp hits 105. I believe I've read somewhere that's the point at which the excessive heat can start to harm the body. So keep her cool tonight, keep her on Tylendol/Motrin/whatever to keep her temp from rising too high and call them first thing in the morning. You could even call now, or go to an after-hours clinic or something, depending on how worried you are and how much pain she's in. Warm compresses on the outside of the ear often help with ear pain, too.

Good luck. Hope the little one feels better soon.

This is really true. I was so worried when we took my dd to the ER when she was 6 mos. old. I had already given her tylenol and she still had a 103.5 fever. The ER doc told me that it isn't like the fever cooks the brain (like I thought!) it is more the seizure and losing oxygen that would be the concern. Some kids just get higher fevers than others. My dd9 regularly gets high fevers with her kidney infections and the doctors have never been concerned about damage from them. Beleive me I've asked plenty too!

Shelby-

 It is so stressful when the kids are sick and you aren't getting enough sleep because they are sick. Hang in there. Both my kids would always end up with ear infections after they spiked fevers like that. Get her checked as soon as you can, before it becomes horribly painful, if it is an ear infection. I never had my first ear infection until I was an adult and I really feel for these kids. They are so painful.

You said that your doc put her on antibiotics right? I would be concerned that she is not improving. I would put in a call to the doc for sure.:thumbsup2

Matt's fever was 107 rectally when he had a febral seizure and we went to the hospital. Good news was there were no long term effects that we've seen (he's 8 now). But take him to the doctor to be sure - and let us know how she's doing.

Thank you all so much for understanding how worried you feel when anything is wrong with your child! She is actually on antibiotics, only has had 3 doses so far. She is improving though, she hasn't had a fever since 2am. :thumbsup2 It's just the hearing thing that's left. My husband saw how worried I was and called our Dr. He told him that her eustachion (sp?) must be blocked and told us a specific medicine to help with it. I felt SO much better after that.

Thank you again for all your advice!!

Sinderelli - OH MY GOSH!!! You deserve super huge hugs!!!:grouphug:
