The business that set up my airfare told me not buy insurance on the same day, but to wait 14 days and purchase it then.
Today is day 15, I went right to their office today to ask why they were not answering their phones yesterday. "Because they were closed on Martin Luther King day and they were too busy to answer their phones on Tuesday"(day 14). The phone rang and rang but they didn't answer.
Now my parents pre-existing conditions (diabetes and liver transplant) will not be covered if I purchase insurance.
Thankfully I have the Disney insurance for the cruise, but nothing else. Now I'm going to be a nervous wreck until we step on the ship. Mom and dad are 72.
I'm just crazy with fear now.

I hope everything goes well for you and your parents and you have a magical cruise!

Thanks, I'm happy I at least have the cruise covered. I wish it was more. I've never paid so much for airfare in my life. It's actually half the price of the cruise.

There are a couple online sites that sell policies from many companies (not sure if I can list their names here). I know if you look at the policies offered, after entering your info, I Have seen some that cover pre-existing past the 2 week period. Some tie it to the final payment. Good luck!

( you can always do a "cancel for any reason" policy too-they only pay 75%... But its something)

Buy your insurance from somebody else. When I want to insure a trip I go to a great online website that allows me to compare many different companies. Maybe you can still find something to meet your needs. But hurry - some have a 21-day booking period.

I always buy my insurance (for everything) through an outside source. It is cheaper and covers everything (airfare, cruise, medical, everything).

agree with the above. the online sites have 14-21 days after initial trip payment to cover pre-existing conditions.

Did you pay for your trip with a credit card? If you did, check to see what coverage you have with your credit card company.

As suggested, you should do some research on the various travel comparison sites. There are companies that will cover pre-existing conditions that have a longer "must purchase within...." windows. It may cost you a bit more, but it's certainly worth looking around. Unfortunately, DCL insurance doesn't cover pre-existing conditions (or didn't used to).

But you need to start looking now.

Definitely look around now.

You bought DCL insurance but were adding OTHER insurance on? I'm not 100% sure that would have worked anyway.

Have your parents had any changes in their conditions in the last 6 months or so? Why not call the DCL travel insurance company and talk with them to see how they define a pre-existing condition. It's possible that they define it as something that has flared up in a certain number of months before booking.

Not sure if this is current, but I found this: http://dcl.wdpromedia.com/media/dcl...PlanningCenter/DCL VPP DofC v75 06.29.15.pdf

Pre-Existing Condition
means an illness, disease, or
other condition during the 60-day period immediately
prior to your effective date for which you or your Traveling
Companion or Immediate Family Member who is
scheduled or booked to travel with you:
1.
received or received a recommendation for a
diagnostic
test, examination, or medical treatment; or
2.
took or received a prescription for drugs or medicine.

Item (2) of this definition does not apply to a condition
which is treated or controlled solely through the taking
of prescription drugs or medicine and remains treated
or controlled without any adjustment or change in the
required prescription throughout the 60-day period before
coverage is effective under this Policy

So if you had to cancel or cut the trip short, and it was because of your parents, they would look back 60 days from when you got the Disney insurance, to see if it had just been diagnosed, or if there had been a change. If the conditions are long diagnosed and taking pills for it keeps things controlled and that has been ongoing, then I don't think the pre-existing condition exclusion applies. If something new happens, something not pre-existing, causes you to change/cancel the trip, it's not a PEC and that exclusion wouldn't apply

But call and chat with them.

This stuff requires the *fear* to be banished when dealing with the business stuff. If at all possible, can you have your spouse call? It's nice to have people just slightly removed from the emotions of it all dealing with things, if you can't put on your business side. For my MIL, at this point, she has so many conditions that I can't imagine *another one* showing up that wouldn't fall under the PEC part of it. :) But she's stable enough on everything.

We also have many talks about what we would do, IF something happened. It's a good idea to do, so the decisions are made (we would cut it short, we would not, does it depend on length of cruise, etc?) before any emotions show up.

I always buy my insurance elsewhere. I use a search to find the best company to fit my needs.

I believe the DCL insurance is effective at the start of the trip. Not when you purchase it. So the 60 day period would be the 60 days prior to the start of the trip.

From the DCL website (vacation insurance coverage)
WHEN COVERAGE BEGINS
All coverages (except Pre-Departure trip cancellation and Post-Departure Trip Interruption) will take effect on the later of: 1) the date the plan payment has been received by Disney Cruise Line; 2) the date and time you start your Covered Trip; or 3) 12:01am Standard time on the Scheduled Departure Date of your Covered Trip.

As all others have posted you can look into other insurance. I certainly would suggest that.

But in the meantime....will you worrying help at all? Is there anything you can do about them getting sick? Doubtful. If they do get sick and can't go, what's going to be a bigger concern of yours, helping them get well or losing money on the flight?

Try looking at the situation from a different point of view. How lucky are you that you get the opportunity to be able to plan a trip with them during their golden years? Try not to worry about things in the future which you have zero control over, it does absolutely no good. Have fun planning and talking with them about the fun you're going to have. If it doesn't happen, well at least you got to share some great times with them planning and getting excited.

My parents, 77 & 80, are going with us on our Mediterranean cruise in June. My mom is beyond excited, she didn't think she could ever have a trip like this. If something happens and we can't do it, at least we had a year to plan, talk and spend time with each other. At the end of the day, that's all we can ask for. Just my $.02

Good clarification. I was hedging my bets in saying "from when you get the insurance", as I wasn't sure if the insurance changes that went along with ACA meant that you paid for it up front or if it was like it was. (I believe that I can buy DCL's insurance now, which means *something* changed in terms of PEC, because WA doesn't allow the exclusion of them, which is why, for instance, State Farm could sell health insurance in other states but they were banned from selling it in WA)

I know it's scary... last summer we took the 7 day Norwegian Fjords cruise with my ailing mom. We screwed up and also missed the window to get coverage for pre-existing conditions. But the good news is, no problems arose and we enjoyed the trip w/o issue. I pray you and your family have the same good fortune... let the positive energy and enthusiasm about the trip send healthy vibes to you all!!!
