Im so over this Ice Bucket Challenge

Exactly. When I first heard about it, I thought for sure that I'd see people doing the challenge in ways that reuse the water, but that really hasn't been what I've seen. As I've quickly realized, I think differently than most on this topic. I think I'm the only person on the thread who mentioned water at all.

It occurred to me-in the video posted on my timeline, the person was standing on her deck--only about 30 feet from a garden that regularly needs watering. I did think I wished it had occurred to her to use resources a little more wisely--then again, we are the people who dump leftover ice in drinks, or water left in a water bottle at the end of a day, or mop bucket water (when it has no soap--I only use soap every 5th or so time) on house plants or garden plants. We do not live in a drought stricken area--but grew up in Colorado so I guess it is always on my radar.

Extorition..oh please let's use some hyperbole!

I literally just got done watching the story of the man who started it all, Pete Frates. To see how his life and his body has changed moved me to tears, it is so sad what this disease has done.

I am proud that DS11 and I partcipated. And yes he donated himself, he took some birthday money and put it in a bucket at Chick-Fil-A that they had set up for ALS. I donated too. One of the young boys that DS11 challenged donated to Junvenile Diabetes and that was perfectly fine.

This was marketing genius at work. Just like the Pink campaign for Breast Cancer was started by a small group of woman with determination this started out small and no one I am sure thought it would take off like it did. For those that suffer I am glad it did.

And if you are sick of it, then scroll past the videos, change the channel, it is not that hard but why you have to begrudge others from doing it I dont understand.

This has brought people from all walks of life together, families had fun with it, CEOs (Bob Iger), atheletes, musicians, celebrities etc. It is a small thing that everyone can do if they choose or can from a health perspecitive (like DS11 wanted to challenge his godmother, but she is pregnant and said that might not be a good idea, it might have been fine, but I did not know so we stuck with friends).

And for those using the drought excuse or drinking water in Africa excuse, once again hyperbole. Water here is not going to help people in Africa, helping them build irrigation systems will or donating to a cause like that. And as for the drought in CA, once again try and study the water cycle, the water is evaporated right back into the sky. And highly doubt that you have never wasted water in your life, I saw lots of glasses of ice water and things left behind a few weeks ago in San Diego and DL. Go stand on your lawn that you imported from elsewhere and dump the water there. Take some water from your pool, throw in a few cubes of ice, and stand on that top step and dump it there, volia it goes right back where it came from.

Go Ice Bucket Challenge:cool1:

I agree totally.

The wonderful thing is that other charities are also benefiting, such as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation your young friend donated to.

We haven't been challenged as it has not caught on around here with the teens. But I do have a young football player who sat at the dinner table last night and told us that he had read up on the disease. It brought awareness of the long lasting effects of head injuries in the sport, information that was blown off when parents and coaches talked about it. But reading about the number of players diagnosed with ALS or CTE has been eye opening. The challenge made a teen curious enough to google a terrible disease and read about it. The campaign was successful in raising awareness.

And you are right, it is marketing genius. I have always found that many naysayers in anything are really just jealous that they (or their organization) did not think of the idea they are complaining about. Well, as mentioned, other diseases are benefiting by proxy. Many people are accepting the challenge and donating to their charity of choice.

There you go. Those of us saying we do not like how the challenge is set up are not putting you down (unless YOU created this marketing). ;)

I misunderstood your reply then..... I thought you were saying I was putting you down or making you feel bad for NOT participating. My bad, sorry.

My reply was directed towards those that feel the "challenge" is a gimmick and not for a worthy cause.

Isn't that site just like The Onion? :confused3

Sure looks like it based on the crop of "news" for today :rotfl: I never even clicked on the link. Funny.

I do get it though--when you live in areas where water is precious, seeing it totally wasted is hard. It would be great if more people thought to do this in ways that are more environmentally responsible, since it is generally quite easy to adjust to do so.

Then again, I am flying across an ocean next week to go on a bunch of rides powered by electricity and to two water parks using all kinds of water solely for fun, so who am I to talk? ;)

You were the first here that mentioned but all over FB people have been using that as an excuse on not to do it, and I think it is lame. Just like them posting the little boy in Africa asking about clean drinking water. if you (general you)want to help him than donate to that cause dont post that on the ALS posts

:thumbsup2. Great response.

Yep, and next year the donations will fall to a million again. As soon as the next trendy charity du jour comes along, people will forget all about ALS, if they ever knew what it was begin with. Celebrities will move on to the new cause de celebre to keep themselves in the news.

I must admit some good has come out of this ridiculous campaign. It's great fun reading the posts complaining about the killjoys. :rotfl2:

So what? If it helps ALS now and makes people aware of the illness than so be it. There are plenty who jump on the bandwagon in Oct wearing their pink and may not have a clue why or donate but it has raised funds and brought awareness to breast cancer and has saved some lives.

Tell me, do people in California have pools and hot tubs?

:thumbsup2 Or the Splash Pad I saw for the kids in San Diego when we toured there earlier this month. Water is being used and rationed. If both causes are on your radar and important than if you want you can find a way to help both causes, ALS and the water drought.

I have no problem with people doing the challenge...I have issue with publicly calling out people to donate money...You do not know someones financial situations....to me its public shaming...and I am officially over it

I agree with everything you said. Dd13 and I did it together (nominated by different people on the same day - completed the challenge while standing on the pool steps), and both she and I donated money, as well (her choice). I can tell you this - if not for this campaign, I would not have donated to ALS this summer.

Out of the 3 people I nominated, 1 did the challenge - not sure about the other 2. However, there is a very good chance that all donated money to the cause, and if not, not a problem.

Do you understand the meaning of the word "prude":confused3? Good for you for donating to a good cause. I also donate to good causes but don't need ice water dumped on me to do so.

Then just tell anybody that challenges you "Thank you, but I have already donated."

Easy Peasy. No extortion, no pain.

It's brilliant viral marketing! I only wish my organization (Special Olympics) had thought of it first.

I AM "over it" though. Tired of being called out by people who haven't donated a dime and are just in it for the fun.

The thing that bothers me, I guess, is that folks are dumping ice over their heads to avoid..TO AVOID writing a checks. The researchers need money to pay for research...so wouldn't it be better to write the check? I have one friend with gorgeous movie star hair (she was actually walking in front of me in home depot and I heard two employees say,"That's some movie star, right? Who is she??" ) anyway...there's no way she would dump water on her hair in public, haha, so she would be a check writer, but has anybody else written a check?

If I had designed this PR stunt, it would have been something so totally unacceptable that folks would have written thousands of dollars to go towards research....like...."Eat a worm or write a check for $100!" :thumbsup2

I know of someone that did a Special O fundraiser where they jumped in an ice cold pool once an hour for 24 hours straight.

I mentioned before that right before I read this thread I had watched on ESPN the story of Pete Frates, the young man who started all this. DS16 was watching it with me and he never got up from the table, just kept watching, even though I was worried about him being alte for his first day of cross country practice. I think he wanted to watch. I heard him gasp when Pete declared he wanted to walk down the aisle at his wedding after they were announced. He did it with the help of his bride and best man. I had tear streaming down my face. At the end he turned to me and said he had no idea, and was amazed how much Pete's body and detoriated from the age of 27 when he was diagnosised to age 29 now. My teenage son now has more awareness of ONE of the horrible diseases that affects people now. All because of Pete Frate and his ice bucket challenge.

And there are vidoes out there for evey charity under the sun, they dont usually bring in the funds unless there is a catch, something that draws you in, like puppies and kittens for the SPCA etc. This ice bucket challenge has been the catch that helped ALS. It got people from all walks of life, when sometimes are country seems so divided, to take a step back, do something silly TOGETHER, I never thought I would be doing something with Oprah, Steven Speilberg and Ethel Kennedy:rotfl2:. We can help a worthy cause and bond as humans...win/win in my book:)

Everyone that I know or have watched have taken the challenge and donated.

1. Many doing the "bucket" are ALSO donating. So are not, but many are.
2. It wasn't a PR stunt. It was a challenge issued by someone WITH ALS to his friends, and it "went viral".

Thats mine too! My nephew is very involved in the Special Olympics in Statesville.

I'd never heard of the site before, but the article is pretty funny.

The fines for washing car, watering lawn etc are real though. $500 fines. There are no fines for the ice bucket challenge.

I've read that pools may be restricted in future. I have no idea if that is true, but a relative of mine in another state had a no pool restriction a few years back during a drought.

Most people I've seen are doing the ice challenge AND donating. You know, if you want to participate then do it, if you don't, then don't participate.

I think is great that so many people can come together to donate for a cause. However why are dumping ice water over our heads?? :confused3
I just don't get it

Just another 'ketchy' way to bring awareness to a great cause! Why 'run' for causes? Same type of thing!
