I'm scared to be in the middle of the ocean.

I always wanted to purchase a Disney cruise. The videos look so great. I am scared to be out in the middle of the ocean. Did anyone have this fear and overcome it?
If you take a Caribbean cruise or a cruise to the Bahamas, you won't be in the middle of the ocean, just on the fringes. If you do a transatlantic you would be closer to the middle of the ocean. Therefore, you should be fine if you avoid the transatlantic cruises. Better yet, with the Alaska cruise, you barely spend any time in the ocean.

I hope this helps!

There is no arguing against irrational fear, but cruising is VERY safe and Disney to date has never had to evacuate a ship.
In this very unlikely event however I must strongly advice against evacuating on your own. It will be your death if you even survive the impact of your dive into the water. A person alone without a beacon will not be found in the Ocean and die. Instead: go to your muster stations and get in your assigned life boat with 50 other people and trained staff. The lifeboat will last long enough for other ships to pick you up. Also it is clearly visible (big yellow floating) and therefor can easily be found by other ships or rescue helicopters. Think about the difference between picking up 40 visible lifeboats or 4000 hard to find individuals out of the Ocean.
Second: you will put other's life at risk as your lifeboat will not be launched until all assigned people have reported. If you evacuate on your own you will severely delay the launch of your assigned lifeboat.

Back to the original topic: chances are very, very small anything will happen on your cruise, but that is the same as chances are very small your plane will crash. Still many people are afraid of flying.
I'm not sure I said I was going to leap off the boat, but since there is concern about that....Don't worry, wasn't planning to escape off the boat, but since DH had titanic like fears of being stuck on a deck my argument was that at least the balcony would get you outside. He didn't buy it and we don't have a verandah! Apparently my smiley face wasn't suggestive enough!

I think you will find once your onboard....short of going and standing by the railings.............you will not really even notice the ocean. These are really big vessels and you will get the feeling of being in a big building with a pool on the roof!

I would honestly say...........give it a try..........you will likely have a great trip.

it IS a little weird not to be able to see any land...kinda freaky...BUT, it is a lot less scary than being in clods and not being able to see ANYTHING!!
The trick is to not over-think it. A little zen breathing exercise maybe.

I don't think we truly thought you would think of it as an escape plan, but just in case...

I don't like the water, can't swim, BUT I feel very secure on the cruise. I've cruised 3 times and the ship is so
large I feel very secure. If you try it, you will see.

The ocean literally terrifies me, lol. When I was a little girl, I was stung pretty badly by a jellyfish. After that, I didn't get in the ocean again for 8 years :sad2: these days, I will go in very shallow water, but that's pretty much it. Not knowing what I could step on or get eaten by...petrifies me.

That being said, we did a cruise, and everything was totally fine once I got on the ship. We even did a snorkeling excursion - my husband had to drag me to it and I was so anxious - but it went fine and was an amazing experience!

We had a balcony and this is probably corny to some people, but several evenings I wound up out there singing "Oceans" by Hillsong United to myself. I am a religious person and it brought me a lot of peace singing that and reassuring myself that I was safe out there in the middle of the great big ocean :lovestruc

I don't know if it's a consideration or not, but on an Alaska cruise you can almost always see land, and there are areas of the Inside Passage you feel like you could reach out and touch it. Of course you really can't, but the land is close, its lovely. I have a friend that has the same fear, and I've been suggesting Alaska for this reason. I'm hoping someday she will try it.

If you really wanna think about it your pretty much surrounded by water anyway where you live just maybe not as visable...

The cruise is just a moving mini city - it's pretty awesome you won't regret it

My best friend is terrified, but he's agreed to go with us now that we've done three DCL cruises. I was a basket case on my first ever cruise but now it feels like home. The biggest thing that helped me was to watch the television screen at times that tells us where we are on the map. I think it's channel 2, but I can't remember. It helped immensely. The other thing that helped was knowing that our first cruise stopped not once, but twice, in the Turks & Caicos for medical emergencies, so I was comforted knowing that they do what it takes to make sure their passengers are safe.

I now look forward to the next cruise with great anticipation and am always trying to figure out a way to take another one even sooner.
