for the craft impaired? I've never done this before. I've unscrewed the seat and I'm just planning on restapling the new fabric over the old, cruddy stuff.

I did that to mine, but now they are all lumpy. It didn't work right.

I've never done it either, but from tips on home improvement shows I would say to staple the fabric going across from eachother. So, don't start in one spot and work your way around. Start in one spot, staple, and go directly across from that staple and staple that side down. Did that make any sense?

Let us know how it goes!

I would pull off the old covering. The foam should be OK, but you may want to put a new layer of batting over it. If the foam is yucky, go to Michaels or MJ Designs or Ben Franklin Crafts or JoAnnes Fabrics (or where ever else) and get new foam. It usually comes in the size you need, if not, buy a bigger piece and cut out the size for your stools. Make a template or pattern using the old foam. Then use an electric knife (not just for turkeys anymore) and cut out your new piece. Covering the foam with batting makes it look better under the fabric and easier to position the material. Then staple away! I did my dining room chairs last year, it was very easy.

I did my dining room chairs a few years ago. I didn't remove to old fabric because it was still in good condition. If your old fabric isn't I would remove it as well as the padding. If you don't want to do this I would at the least add a layer of batting over the old fabric. As someone else alternate side as you staple. Don't start at one point and work your way around. If they are square staple in the middle first then go to opposite side and staple in the middle the do the other two. Then alternate as you go around. Fold the corners like a present so the will look neat.
