Today was my first day back at work after a week of vacation. And I am already not a happy camper. I am looking for some advice on how to handle what happened while I was gone.
Let me give you some background. I work retail for a large departement store chain. Our company is big on customer service, which means that I spend a lot of time on the phone or on the computer tracking down merchandise for customers. To that end in our stockroom we have a small work area, complete with phone, computer, a section to hold merchandise, and other assorted things. The department that I supervise gets the majority of phone calls, though other departments do come and use all of our stuff, which is fine with me.
The week before I went on vacation my direct supervisor came to me and said that our store manager had complained to her that he had seen too many people "socializing" in the stockroom. And four times that he could think of he had walked thru our stockroom and seen people standing around by the computer. My reply was "Duh!' Well, not really. But that is what I thought. I stated that it is a work area, and we have a lot of stuff that associates use on a daily basis. My boss told me that we just needed to watch it, that for some reason the store manager thought we were goofing off, and that it was his perception that mattered. I said fine, I would talk to my team, even though I was a bit ticked off. I know my people work hard, and it bothers me that if he thought any of us was slacking he wouldn't just address it at the time. Would it have been so hard to say "Hey, what are you guys doing? Get to work!"
Anyway after all of that happened I had a week off. And today on my first day back, what do I see? A security camera none to cleverly disguised, pointed right at our work area!
My team told me it showed up this past Saturday, and someone had already climbed up to see if it was hooked up or just a fake (it is hooked up). So now not only are we being watched whenever we are in the stockroom, but we are being taped as well.
I guess I don't understand why such a big deal is being made out of this. Fine, you think we are messing around (but can't bother to ask what we are doing), but we were "talked to" about it. Why the need for a camera? Not to mention the idea of being watched creeps me out. And the thing is we are on camera all of the time when we are out on the selling floor, so I'm not sure why this bugs me so. It just seems to scream "I don't trust you or your team". And my whole team is livid!
What also irritates me is that a few months ago I kept finding empty packages in the stockroom, where it looked like someone was stealing merchandise. I asked for a camera at that time, and no one could bother putting one up! So aparently it is not as big a deal to steal as it is for it to look like you are goofing off.
I don't know what to do, or if I should do anything. I do know that angry associates do not a happy work place make. And I don't think it is too great for the whole customer service aspect either. I haven't said anything to my immediate boss, and I really don't think that would help anyway. It wasn't her idea, she loves me and my team! I guess I am just looking for advice and maybe someone ele to tell me what an idiot there boss is so I can feel better.
Thanks for listening.
