so i guess i'll try here! my DH is Irish & VERY fair skinned, freckles the whole 9 yards ~ of course sun block is big on our packing list. however, he has big problems with sunblock "burning" his face- that seems to be the only way he can describe it. he says it stings & when he sweats of course it only gets worse. we've tried everythign out there- sticks, creams, sensitive skin care, sprays... i've never heard of any one having this problem before. do you know of anyone with this problem or have any ideas of what to do? i really appreciate it! thanks!!

I would check with his pediatrician?
I'm really concerned about DD getting sunburned at Disney- I think she has DH's fair skin. Wish she had mine- more apt to tan- not to burn.
Good luck!

Have you tried the sports sunblock? I have trouble with most sunblocks burning my face if it gets too close to my eyes so your DH probably just has very sensitive skin. I'd check with a doctor because there may be prescription sunblock he could use on his face.

What about sunblocking his body and getting a wide brim hat for his face?

That's what I plan on doing for DH. He's very fair skinned too.

Have you tried the Neutrogena wax stick? I have the same sort of skin and the same problem, but I can use that one.

My dd's and I get that 'stinging/burning' feeling as well. At the recommendation of my dd's peditrician we use "Eucerin Facial Moisturizer' it is not sunblock but has a 25 spf. Its in the hand lotion/moisturizer section of the walgreen, cvs type stores. White bottle with pink top.

Knock wood none of us have ever burned with it and we are also Irish, fair skinned and burn easily. Even during days at the beach we are fine, remember to re-apply often as in any sunblock.

I also use facial moisturizer with sunscreen. I use Suave UV Protective Moisture Lotion. It's only SPF 15, but it works fine for me (very fair skin.) I bought it at Wal-Mart.

My DS has trouble with sunblock stinging as well as having a bad allergic reaction to one. My only advice is to find a sunblock by trial & error. Everyone is different and what works for one may or may not work for another.
I would also try asking your Dr. to recomend some different brands to try.

I have this problem, and I first would recommend finding a sunscreen in which the main ingredient is zinc oxide and not a chemical sunscreen. Sometimes it's the chemical sunscreen that causes the iritation, and the natural zinc oxide doesn't cause a problem. Another try would be to buy Clinique sunscreen. It's hypoallergenic and I've never had any problems with it.

I am also very fair skinned and sunscreen used to do this to me. I was told to make sure to buy PABA free sunscreen. It worked like a charm..no more stinging with sunscreen! PABA is some kind of chemical is some suncreens. Hope this helps your DH:D

How about trying one of the sunscreens made especially for babies - I know they have high SPF's and are made for sensitive skin. (You could even transfer to a clear bottle instead of the pink ones they usually come in!:p )

HTH!

FWIW, I have found that the sunscreens marketed for babies still cause stinging on the face for those of us with sensitive skin.

I have the same problem. My dermatologist told me that I am probably sensitive to the preservatives in the sunblock. He gave me the name of 3 types to try. I cannot remember them off the top of my head, but I will get the list and post it.

I personal use a moisturizer with 15spf and wear sunglasses and a sunvisor, does the trick for me.

But this past weekend when I bought sunblock for our upcoming Disney trip the end of Aug, advanced planner here ;) I bought this stuff by No-Ad it was especially for faces and was zinc oxide but it went on clear, unlike most zinc stuff you see that goes on in white or for kids it comes in colors. I thought it would work great for ears. It was only $1.97 at WalMart. Pretty cheap, could be worth a try.

 I think you found the right place to post, don't you?

:bounce: Welcome to the DIS :bounce:

I have not tried any of these, but below is a list of suncreens my derm recommended for me. He told me that most people sensitive to sunscreen make out well with atleast one of them. The Derm. told me that many of the smaller pharms. carried them but not necessarily the chain stores.

Solbar Avo 32
Ombrelle 30
Neutrogena 45

thanks for all the great ideas!!!!
castlegazer, i'm from MA too & leaving (i think) around the same time as you! 3/24?
thanks again!!
