I'm not a foodie, but I play one at WDW. A Trip Report from Christmas 2010

I just wanted to thank folks for reading along.

I found out there are some lurkers out there reading along as well, so

:wave2: to the folks from work, and anyone else that's following along.

I hope ya'll are having fun.

And, Here we are:

Day 4 (12/30/10) getting ready for the Luau at Polynesian Resort.

We were getting ready to leave for our 5:15 Luau. We decided to drive. Although, we did get turned around along the way. As it was 12/30, the guards at the gates were stopping everyone, making sure no one was trying to get something for free. I told them we had a Luau reservation, and they checked their sheets before letting us through. That’s some serious stuff.

We got a decent-enough parking spot, and walked inside. We went to the concierge desk to pick up our tickets. We had to walk quite a ways to get TO the luau bar. There was a little photo shoot we had to meet up for, and got inside just as the Luau was starting.

*Side bar* - This time, my room was running behind, and the other room was there. (They followed the road signs correctly). But, it didn’t seem NEARLY as big a deal to me as Tuesday when they were late for the Fantasmic! dinner package. Go figure… :confused3:

I’m going to split this review into 2 sections: Food and Show
Food – The good of this was that it was all you care to eat. The chicken they served (bbq) was pretty good, and the coconut bread (pineapple? Something Hawaiian) was good too. (I think it was coconut).
I want to say there were also ribs, and then there was salad, too.

And the downside to all this was that there really wasn’t a LOT for any picky eaters (Nephew and Potato), so while they were given the uncrustables by the staff, it would have been nice had there been the Hawaiian version of mac & cheese on the tables, too.

But as stated in the title, I'm not a "foodie," so I don't have a lot of good pictures of the food.

The chocolate volcano desserts were AMAZING. SO rich but SO good.
426.jpg

My brother took a BIG spoonful of the sauce, and ate it, and made a face like death, then, he was okay. He said, “I thought it was caramel… it’s not.”
“yeah, it’s red, like, LAVA from the VOLCANO! I’m guessing raspberry?”
“oh, yeah… that’s what it was.” Dude, I know it’s dark, but c’mon… you can see that.

Here’s Bean stuffing his face with whatever was in front of him. He eats like a chipmunk, stuffing his cheeks. I just love this picture. You can almost feel his food coma.
427.jpg

Another great aspect of the Luau was that it was all you care to drink. Bud Light is great for an all you can drink beer (It's a St. Louis Product after all :thumbsup2 ). That being said, I’m at Disneyworld, on vacation. I'm with my kiddos and I don’t want to get :drinking1 falling down. I take it easy on the hooch, which is good and bad. (I was able to be a parent, but I didn’t feel like I got my money’s worth out of the free beer.)

Next: The show.

The show was good, I think.
I say it like that because we were trying to deal with finding something for 4 boys to eat, and feeding Baby Girl a bottle, and cleaning up a glass I dropped (oops). Because of all of the commotion of eating, I missed the “plot” of the Luau show. I think one of the guys was trying to court a woman that was out of his league, but, I don’t know. The music was good, and the show was entertaining, but the plot was amiss (to me.)

At one point, they asked the kids to go up and dance. Bean loved it, but I didn't get a good picture of him.

The Fire Dancer was great, though, I’m not sure how HE fit into the plot.
And, as all the Polynesian gals were up dancing, those around me commented repeatedly on their attractiveness. I get it, yes, they’re all pretty. But man… just watch the show, don’t argue over who’s the pretties gal you don’t have a shot with. The answer is… you aren't going home with ANY of them, so hush & watch the show.

This was 2 credits per person. To an extent, the Luau was the reason we went with DxDDP. MeMaw really wanted to do this option. We saw it was 2 credits, and were trying to see what meals we could skip or what-have-you, opting instead for DxDDP. To the extent that MeMaw LOVED what she wanted to get out of this vacation, I found the Luau great. However, this is one Disney experience that now that I’ve had, I really don't think I'll be doing this again.

It’s 7:30 or 7:45 at this point, and dark outside. When we left for the Luau, our plan was to leave the car at the Poly, and Monorail it over to MK for the “New Years’ Eve” fireworks, one day early. (it is December 30th, after all).
As we were leaving the luau, I made a wrong turn, and wound up walking past the beach at the Polynesian resort. I looked across the water, and saw Cinderella’s Castle! How neat is that.

Wait… If I can see the Castle, then I'll bet we can see the fireworks, too.
I spoke up, “Hey, gang, want to hang out here for 45 minutes and watch the 8:30 fireworks?”
We did, and I thought for SURE the boys would lose it. WRONG AGAIN!
They played in the sand on the beach for 40 of the 45 minutes. You may not be able to see it, but here is a sand drawing of Mickey Mouse by Potato (DS6)
438.jpg

And a couple more Polynesian Resort beach pictures
430.jpg

443.jpg

I also took a picture of the Grand Floridian, but it's too blurry to post.
The fireworks last 10-15 minutes. Baby Girl is asleep, Bean is winding down, and Potato & DS7 are covered in sand. Time to head back to POR. I really wanted to go to MK to see the Fireworks at Midnight, but then I thought to myself, “really, how much different can midnight fireworks be compared to the 8:30 holiday WISHES fireworks?” I decided not TOO different, and stayed at POR. I was again not TIRED.

I walked on up to the Food Court. Again, POR is a BIG resort. Deciding to walk from Alligator Bayou building 33 is real commitment! I had my journal in order to wind down, and keep my notes as current as possible to help when / if I ever write a trip report. I waited in line to thank Genevive for the great job she’d done on my pasta from Monday night. She remembered me (is that good or bad?:confused3) and thanked me for the compliment.
I later learned that cast members that get compliments have special recognitions on thier nametages. Or, I was told that. I don't KNOW if it's true.

I also got talked into a fudge brownie. I thought about doing it ala mode, but the server gals said it would be 2 snack credits, and I didn’t want to waste them. Then I saw from my receipt I was still in the 30’s on snack credits for my room with only 2 days left.:headache: DxDDP is a LOT of food!

It got to be about 10:30 or 11, and I bagged it for the night. Tomorrow’s New Years Eve at Disney, and going to be a LONG day… let’s hit the hay early to prep for tomorrow.

checking in! We have DxDP for the first half of our split stay in just 17 days. I really really hope I don't forget to use those snack credits... gotta remind myself I don't need to hoard them for winter! :lmao:

The snack credits were the good and bad of the DxDDP. You really can get whatever whenever, but you're too full from the sit-down meals to enjoy anything.

I think most of them are going towards drinks/sodas. since it will be nice and hot. :thumbsup2 may not be what some would think of as the 'best use' of the credits, but using them is better than trying to hoard them and end up not using them at all. :confused3 right?

This just came up in the podcast. And yes. you have the credits, use them. That's what they're there for.

And, thanks to everyone for your patience. I'm hoping to get my TR update on the inter-webs tomorrow. (which makes this post irrelevant to anyone that isn't subscribing to the thread, but, whatever.... )

Day 5 – New Year’s Eve Day

When you read & read about just how busy the week between Christmas & New Year’s is at WDW, you start looking for signs that it’s true.
Lines, wait times, and busses were getting longer & longer as the week went on, so we had no reason to think it would get better, not worse, ON New Year’s Eve.

Waking up with a plan, we got right to it. The PLAN is to spend all day at Magic Kingdom, then hit our 7:00 ADR at Coral Reef in Epcot, and watch the New Year’s Fireworks over the World Showcase Lagoon. Okay, let’s compare our day to our plan.

We started off by driving to Epcot (free parking!) in order to take the Monorail to TTC, and onto the Magic Kingdom. We get to Epcot, park, and see TRON TRAIN!!!
448.jpg

AWESOME! So exciting!
The phrase “Tron Train” had become a bit of a staple to our week, so it was nice to finally get a picture of it.
Here's a pic of the Family. I really feel like a lucky Husband and Father, and here's why.
451.jpg

We got onto the Monorail at Epcot to go to the TTC, and while driving past the toll booth for Magic Kingdom, we saw that once again, rumors of crowd sizes rang true. I want to say it was still EARLY (before 8?) and just look at the number of people waiting to get into the parking lot!
453.jpg

The Parking lot was filling FAST. And the lines at TTC were CRAZY! Disney, again, is trying to do things right. At TTC, all available space on the ramp to the monorail was FULL. Same with the boat dock. So, they DID bring in busses to drive from TTC to MK. I really admire Disney for this.

Of course, we had our stroller and baby girl was finally using it, so busses didn’t help us at all. We instead walked toward the ferry boat. We hadn’t ridden them yet, and we wouldn’t have to collapse the stroller to ride.
We hitched a ride on the Admiral Joe Fowler!
459.jpg

458.jpg

Arrival at Magic Kingdom was again, nutters. Normally, I like to arrive on Main Street U.S.A. and just walk & stroll and get washed in the Disney Magic. BUT, when 9 million of your new best friends are trying to do the same thing, it’s more like a quick rinse in ice water… not “bathing in the magic.”

Given the ba-jillion people around, and 9 of us, we decided how best to use our time. DS7 and I waited in line to ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, while others did something else. When you have tons of time in line, you see things you aren’t used to seeing.

465.jpg

463.jpg

471.jpg

(This cracks me up:lmao:)

I was in line with a dad from Atlanta, and I was talking about needing a belt (this was a mission of mine throughout my entire vacation.) Interesting note: There are NO Disney or Mickey or anything “belt” related anywhere on WDW. I found a bland leather belt at the Emporium, and that was IT. And it was $40! If it had a belt buckle, or character names, or anything, then I’d have been fine. But I own a brown leather belt that I forgot. I can keep holding up my pants for 2 more days.
I should have checked the Haberdashery at Boardwalk, but did not.

Then, switchpass while the others rode Big Thunder Mountain, and Bean, Baby Girl & MeMaw walked around with me.

We were over in Adventureland, and waited in line for Aladdin. THAT’S another clue it’s too busy… When you watch the magic carpets go 11 rounds before you get on!
483.jpg

Nephew, Potato, Bean

We got off of Aladdin right around 12:20 or 12:30. Then, we heard it:

A parade...
A parade headed from Frontier Land towards Main Street...
And we have 12:40 Tony’s Town Square reservations...
Which is on the OTHER side of the street! :scared1::scared1:
so we have no way to cross if we don’t hurry!

So, we hustle. It’s tough to run with a family of 6. And, we had a stroller with us.

We ran past Crystal Palace, and saw the parade in front of the “partners” statue. All of us made it across the street JUST in time (seriously, it was less than 30 seconds.):woohoo:
Whew…
Oh, we still can’t rest, we need to check in at Tony’s Town Square!

We walk along under the awnings, and get to Tony’s. From there, we have a GREAT view of the parade. And, since I was waiting for my reservation, I didn’t feel badly standing there.

494.jpg

Here’s my DISBoards namesake! (another first for me. I’d yet to see Uncle Scrooge at WDW. Here he is, though!)
499.jpg

Waiting for lunch, watching the parade, I got a text message from back home. A friend said there was a Tornado Warning. I looked out at the first bits of sun we’d had in Florida, and asked if he meant in Disney, or back home. :confused3 He said back home, and volunteered to drive by my house in the event something touched down. 30 minutes later, I got a text from our dog watcher / house sitter that the storm had rolled through, and there was still a roof on the house, and no rainwater in the basement.
(This has nothing to do with a Trip Report, but it seemed important at the time, so it was in my notes)

We were seated for Lunch!

Next Update: Tony’s Town Square Lunch. / Busiest. Afternoon. Ever. (At Magic Kingdom)

It triggers the mammalian gag reflex?

That's a very optimistic way of viewing it.

Makes me laugh too!

hmmm in your last post you mentioned having 30 snack credits. I'll bet you could use them and remove your belt issue all at the same time.

Glad the tornado's didn't leave you with an in basement pool.

Wow! Amazed at the crowd levels. You get bonus points for putting up with heavy crowds and long lines with a positive attitude! I might fail that test...:rolleyes1

I have had such a blast (so far) reading your TR! There are SO many things to comment on but my favorite day so far was .....all of them! I can't pick a favorite :rotfl2: I have to praise your entire family for hanging in there each day (esp the kiddos) and getting the most out of each park. btw if you happen to find a 50's something lady tagging along behind you all on your next trip - dont' be alarmed ;)

I love your trip report so far. I can't believe how much you guys get done in one day - it is quite impressive. Your family is awesome!! :goodvibes

Not quite as exciting as crossing in front of a speeding train, but the steaks are just a high! (Wait, does Tony's have steaks? I' have to check the menu....)

Here’s my DISBoards namesake! (another first for me. I’d yet to see Uncle Scrooge at WDW. Here he is, though!)

He's a rare bird, that's for sure. We met him several years ago at the Christmas party. He and Donald would take turns at a Christmas Tree Lot behind the tea cups.

it’s more like a quick rinse in ice water… not “bathing in the magic.”
:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl: Great line!

I can keep holding up my pants for 2 more days.
Return to your hotel room. Remove the cord from the hair dryer. Run it through your belt loops. Tie a knot. Problem solved!:thumbsup2

We were over in Adventureland, and waited in line for Aladdin. THAT’S another clue it’s too busy… When you watch the magic carpets go 11 rounds before you get on!
:scared1: How long was the line for the real Dumbo?

(This has nothing to do with a Trip Report, but it seemed important at the time, so it was in my notes)
Yeah, that's important. Glad everything was ok. That could ruin a vacation in a hurry.

hmmm in your last post you mentioned having 30 snack credits. I'll bet you could use them and remove your belt issue all at the same time.
Man vs. Food... Dole Whip edition!

Guess you and the family had a fun time despite the crowds. Glad you saw Uncle Scrooge. Great pics too.

Thanks everyone for your patience. I'm sorry the most recent update has taken a while, but sometimes, Life gets in the way.

going to TRY to finish tonight... But, if anyone wants to start reading now, it's been fun writing, and some folks said it's been fun reading.

Silly life, always getting in the way!

Looking forward to the next installment! :goodvibes

Next Update:
We got a good seat at Tony’s Town Square. For the 10 of us (9… plus baby girl) having a bench along the back really helped keep the kiddos in check. When looking at the menu, I saw a meatball sub. After learning that “flatbread” meant “pizza” at Mama Melrose, I asked if this one was a sandwich or pizza. She said sandwich, so I said okay. The DW got the Spaghetti & Meatballs, as did MaunyPawpaw. DW felt she *had* to, considering the theme of the restaurant. Pawpaw just wanted spaghetti. I ordered an appetizer as well (DxDDP is SO much food!) and we wound up getting an extra order of cheese garlic bread. In my notes, I wrote that this was really the only magical moment of our trip (where Disney screws up in your favor), but overall, I was happy, so why would it matter that I didn’t get anything other than a free plate of cheese garlic bread?
Although, the bread was pretty friggin wonderful. So, there is that.

For dessert, I ordered what was possibly the biggest piece of cake ever. Lemon cake, but it was HUGE! I tried to use the spoon for perspective, but it doesn’t do it justice.
507.jpg

The other foodie picture I took was the lady & the tramp stencil on the plate. It was made out of coco or something, but really neat. I found this little bit extra to be really nifty. One of those things that Olive Garden just doesn’t do, that makes a Disneyworld restaurant, well, worth being inside the Magic Kingdom.
505-1.jpg

My brother & his son left for the resort following lunch. I cautioned him against this, saying crowd levels would be really high, and he may not get into Epcot for our 7 p.m. dinner reservations. He said he’s chance it, because Little Man would NOT make dinner without a nap. Okay, man… I hope it works out for you. :rolleyes1

We’ve got nice full bellies and a stack of splash mountain fast-passes. I decided that since I’d done a LOT of the rides while DW walked with little guys that I would walk around with those too short for Splash Mountain. (Bean & a sleeping Baby Girl). Bean wanted to go to Cinderella’s Castle, and I thought that would be great. BUT, it’s New Year’s Eve, so the inside is blocked off for all of the extra-special fireworks. We still got to see one of the mosaics on the backside where a cast member told us a little story. Apparently, you’re to select a single mosaic tile, place your finger on it, and make a wish. THEN, on each return trip, select the SAME tile and wish, and it’ll come true.

So she said…
510.jpg

And again, crowd level time. I’ve been fighting holding DS3’s hand while pushing a stroller, and I was really starting to worry about him. There were SO MANY PEOPLE! I thought I’d find someplace quiet to wait, but there was no place that was quiet anywhere inside the Magic Kingdom! I found a spot on the edge of Frontierland and Liberty Square (kind of behind the stocks?) and waited there. But here are some crowd shots!
515.jpg

518.jpg

We waited there for, I wanna say a half-hour while the rest of the party finished Splash Mountain. After, I saw the line for Haunted Mansion was over 2 hours, and the rest of Frontier land was, well, check out the pics! I also felt really badly. The gentleman in the picture got a brand new digital camera for his vacation, and didn’t get an SD card with it. I assumed SOME gift shop SOMEWHERE sold one, but I didn’t have an extra one with me. I really hope he found a card, Since LOTS of pictures are necessary when you're at Walt Disney World. I only have 714 from this trip, and don't think it's enough.

Our dinner reservations were at 7, and it was like 3:30. DS7 had been BEGGING to go swimming, and it was “up to” 70 for the first time all week. Having JUST cautioned my brother about missing dinner, I did not want to go back to POR, then head to Epcot.

But, it’s not MY vacation, it’s EVERYONE’S vacation…

We went back to POR to go swimming.

As we leave the park, DW says, “We went shopping, and sent it to the in-park guest services! Go back & get our stuff!” So, I did, and found a Hidden Mickey! I was proud of finding this one.

523.jpg

I got to the bus just as DW sat down w/ the kids on the bus. She said, “You know where you’re going. I wasn’t going to miss the bus on your count!” I  my DW!
We got back and swam for an hour or so. DW and Baby Girl took a nap while the boys & I swam. Now, the air was plenty chilly, but the water was warm enough. So, you pretty much had to stay under the water the whole time. This can be tough when DW3 can’t swim or touch the bottom. So, I held him. Of course he let go once, and went under unexpectedly, but, once bitten twice shy, and he didn’t let go of me again after that. :thumbsup2:

[rant]And of course, even at Disney there are occasional “bad apples.” There was a couple of young ladies sun bathing while I was in the quiet pool with the 3 boys. It was unfortunate that some of the older (male) guests veered OFF the walking path to walk past a quiet pool and then went BACK onto the walking path… but other than “eww”, they never stopped walking or said anything, so I didn’t feel the need to say anything then. But seriously, time & a place, and Disney is not that time or place, sirs… don’t walk past the pool because someone is wearing a swimming suit.[/rant]

After swimming, it was, oh, 5-5:30. We got cleaned up, and caught the bus to Epcot (as our car was still there from the morning.) We got back to Epcot just after 6, and again… CROWDS! Seriously, for anyone that says Disney is crowded on New Year’s Eve, they are NOT lying to you.

527.jpg

Our reservation was at 7:05 at Coral Reef. So, we figured we could walk around the World Showcase (just to walk) for 30-45 minutes. But man… step, wait, step, wait. It was so bad I had to pick up Bean so he wouldn’t get lost! While I was holding him (on my hip, but he was facing backwards) a stranger gave him some of the hats & noisemakers that were being given out. But I didn’t realize he had them. :headache: So out of nowhere, I got a new year’s noisemaker RIGHT in my ear…. Ouch.

I spotted a couple that laughed at him, and then me, and carried on. Thank you retired couple. I’m happy my son making me deaf was able to provide entertainment for you! :thumbsup2:

[rant] The guests at Epcot on New Year’s Eve were not typical Disney guests either. These were people looking to get drunk on New Years at Disney. And that’s expensive, and, even though it IS New Year’s, it still Disney. And yes, we’re outside, but you don’t have to TRY to be loud. Some of the groups of 4 young people (I’m 32 and calling the 4 22 yr olds “young people”) we just being… ignorant. Language, not saying excuse me, and I overheard the various “why bring kids out on New Years?” the whole thing. [/rant]

We made our way around World Showcase, and checked in at Coral Reef. They had a nice drink cart set up outside, and there was this tiny piece of grass. The 4 boys ran for 10 minutes on this thing, and they were gross & sweaty by the time we sat down. BUT, they were also tired. It makes meals significantly easier to enjoy when 2 of the 4 fall asleep before the appetizer arrives.
531.jpg

532.jpg

Before I talk about the meal, I want to mention Server Ben.
He. Was. GREAT!

If you’re going to Coral Reef, I would say to ask the management if you can have his section. I know he’s probably not there, but in addition to thanking him with our wallet at the end of the meal, we sought out a manager to tell him that Ben deserved an “official” guest compliment. Hopefully, Ben got one, ‘cause he was a fantastic server!
I’m going to take a break here, and finish New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day another time.

Joining in! We've gone a few times during Christmas week and we've stayed away from Epcot bc of the drunk, unruly crowds. We found DHS a great spot to ring in the new year - still had alcohol should you want to toast the holiday, bands, dancing, but a little less crowded.

Wow, what a crowd. 2 hours for the Haunted Mansion??? :scared1::scared1:

I've never been in Disney for New Year's Eve, although I was at Universal IOA on New Year's Eve in 2003/2004. Honestly, it really wasn't too bad there.:confused3

I got to the bus just as DW sat down w/ the kids on the bus. She said, “You know where you’re going. I wasn’t going to miss the bus on your count!” I  my DW!
I guess that's another way of saying "Thank you for picking up the stuff I bought."
