I'm just amazed that parents don't care what their kids listen to...

Just a vent - no need to be flamed here...

DD went to her gf's b'day party tonight - the b'day girl got Lady Gaga's CD as a present. When I walked in they were blaring it & singing it @ the top of their lungs. At 12!! :scared1:
The mom of dd's friend didn't have a clue who Lady Gaga was & thus had no idea that the songs were bad - so I took the lyrics & showed her.

I'm just wonder if the mom of the kid who gave the gift is just clueless too or just doesn't care? :headache: The child (who I've never met before tonight) is invited to dd's party next week - it'll be interesting to see if we get the same present or not - I'm afraid it may end up in the trash during the party. :rolleyes1

I don't think I'm really on top of things (hip or whatever the terminology is nowadays) but L.G is on tv ALL the time - maybe they don't watch tv :confused3

In 1982 at a birthday party I was give 3 copies of Michael Jackson's Thriller on album. The music was objectionable to my parents, so they put the albums away. By the time I cared, no one listened to vinyl anymore. All I have to say is thank you mom & dad--I got a pretty penny selling the three never opened records in the past month.

As for what kids listen to now---who knows I can't understand any of the lyrics, as I too am officially old.

By no means am I flaming you but kids listen to the music that is hip at that time, and most times they aren't taking the lyrics literally. When I was 10, I was listening to Bell Biv Devoe's song "Do me", Madonna's "Like a virgin" and George Micheal's "I want you Sex". I had no idea what it actually meant or rather didn't ever think about it. I just liked the beat. Luckily, my parents morals and values allowed me to make the decisions in my life, not the music I listened to

I have 2 girls 12 & 16. They love Lady GaGa and actually I love the music also. Lyrics - most of them don't make sense at all - Videos are way out there. My DD16 is going to major in Music in school. Music is one thing I can't stop them being exposed to as the bus driver has the radio on for them on the way to school and coming home. They don't listen to the head banging stuff so I am not overly concerned about Lady GaGa.

I'll probably get flamed, but my DD is 5 and because I listen to GaGa in the car and :gasp: Adam Lambert she loves them both. Do I let her watch the videos? No. I am a pretty liberal chick though.
But like a PP said, she's an "artist" so she is going to push buttons and make statements like Madonna, MJ (my mom always hated the fact that he grabbed his crotch), Janet. And since all of these past artists pushed the sex button she is going a different route with being sadistic and poisoning people in videos and "killing herself" on stage, I mean EVERYONE knows her.
OMG, I will never forget when my brother was 10 he went out and got a Guns n Roses cassette, my father stepped on it b/c he thought they were devil worshipers :lmao:....yet Slash is one of the greatest guitarist of all time.
It is what it is, but just like you don't like the idea of your child listening to it, this child's parents don't object to it. Everyone has their own opinions.

I wonder if there were older siblings in the home. I have found the older my kids get the harder it is to keep things "G" rated around my younger ones!

^^We have a similar issue. Only with us, my six and eight year old daughters know every word to the theme song to the series Dexter because it's on mine and my wife's iPod. Nothings funnier though than two little blonde girls walking through the mall singing "...cause two can keep a secret if one of them is dead.".

Thanks for not flaming me:thumbsup2

Just curious - would any of you give it as a b'day present to a 12 yo?

Yes - her videos are a WHOLE other story - just watched telephone a few mins ago - I was strictly thinking of lyrics

And yes her songs are SOOO catchy -shes great at what she does

No worries, we had my 2 yr old niece singing paparazzi in the car on a trip to FL. Was absolutely hilarious.

CUTE - and that song is actually an okay one in my mind -I'm thinking her only okay song without specific mention of sex, guns, drinking, porn & whatever else she throws in there...

I don't know if I'd ever personally give another kid a CD just in case I did overstep someone's boundaries of what they think is appropriate. Just stick to an iTunes card. :thumbsup2

Oh and let's not go too far...I wouldn't say Lady GaGa is "great" at anything...

Yeah, I use to love Just Dance, until I figured out what she says on the part that sounds like its subliminal. Then I was like eh, if it comes on the radio I'll listen but I'm not gonna download it.

As far as my niece, she is a regular character. She dances to bluegrass music too. :rotfl:

Like I said, DD is only 5, but I am thinking when she is 12 and has little pre teen parties I don't think I would purchase the CD for her friend, as it really isn't up to me to decide what she can/can't listen to, maybe give a giftcard to best buy or something.

But if it was my cousin (who is a year older than DD, I am thinking down the line in life) and he asked for a certain CD I would ask my aunt (his mom) first, we're like sisters and if she said no, I'd say ok what else do you think he would like instead? If she said yes then I'd be happy to get it.

When I was in middle school, I didn't understand why Boyz II Men's "I'll Make Love To You" was banned from being played at our dances. I knew all the lyrics, i just never really thought about what they were or meant. For the most part, just because kids knwo the lyrics, doesn't eman they're actually paying attention to them.

In any case, unless the images on the cover/insert were extremely objectionable and graphic, I would probably give that CD to a 12 year old without so much as a second thought.

Listen to Gaga sing live. She is amazing! Also, I am 16 and blush sometimes at stuff she says. Then again, I am sort of a prude..

I think you have to read A LOT of urban dictionary before you even know what lady gaga's lyrics MEAN half the time. She's really catchy, and that's why kids (and adults) like her. I definitely don't think that her lyrics would scar a 12 year old for life. That being said, I would probably never give a CD.

Not to completely derail the thread...but I think my biggest problem with Lady Gaga is the fact that she just comes off as weird for weird's sake
rather than appearing as though she's making any sort of true artistic statement. That and his music seems incredibly dispossable to me. There's no substance to them at all even for pop music.

And this is coming from the guy who's a big fan of GWAR!

I agree. She really seems like she's channeling DEVO and putting lingerie on it.

ITA. Although the things I was listening to included The Offspring, Dr. Dre and Eminem.

Morals aren't reflected in music nor are the based off of it, therefore I have no problem with any music listened to at any age.

Kids aren't stupid and it's time to stop treating them like they are, they know the difference between music and real life.

What I mean by that is that if there is no family guidance our values morals can be affected. "One of the most important characteristics of moral judgments is that they express our values. Not all expressions of values are also moral judgments, but all moral judgments do express something about what we value."

All that gangster rap that was going on in the late 80's and early 90's definitely had an effect on those children who had no home support or influence, thus the influx of the younger gang members. Now my brother listened to NWA and Ice Cubes "Cop Killer" song but because he was raised to know right and wrong and had values instilled in him, he did not make morally wrong judgments.
