*IM*ing and Facebook together?

Do any of you still IM ? I text alot but still IM with a few friends. Its easier to type quickly on IM than text.

So my current AIM has been working fine but I just got an update notice to do the AIM 7.2 upgrade. Anyone have that? I'm just a little leery because it says I'll then be linked to Facebook and Twitter, and everything will - or could go to all places but I don't want it to do that. Will I be able to prevent it? Should I just keep my current version?

I do have Facebook but use it sparingly. So can anyone technologically inclined explain this or help? Or tell me if I should or shouldn't do the update - upgrade? Sorry to sound so inept Thanks.
