I'm home, can I go back?

Just got back in tonight after my week+ trip to New Mexico. We had a FANTASTIC trip, despite the weather. It snowed several days while we were there, but usually just barely higher than we were going, and twice just enough to say it was snowing outside.

We got lots and lots and LOTS of material for my project-- so much it's going to take me through the end of the summer semester to properly go through and set it all up, I think! But we got to see some really neat stuff that the average guest at Aztec Ruins doesn't get to see (but will in photos after this project is done).

Amazingly, my mom got along well with my grandparents and aunt -- she can't stand them, but other than one afternoon when my grandma for some reason made a very rude, tacky, and inappropriate comment (that wasn't *meant* to be that way and she apologized for for the next 2 days), you couldn't tell that my mom didn't like them. Everyone got along amazingly well.

Having my mom along on this trip was worth more than I can say. It was fantastic having a trip with her again, and she was huge, huge, HUGE help in the research. Much more help than either DH or my dad would have been, even though I would have liked having them along.

As for DH, he did mostly well, but we think we identified what caused his problem last time. My mom hit the nail on the head I think: DH is getting *car sick*, and that's it! It's not altitude at all, it's simple carsickness. But since before his first trip to New Mexico and Colorado he'd never been motion sick in his life, he had no idea what it was, and he's prone to panic attacks. So he didn't know what was happening to him, knew altitude sickness could be a problem, panicked, and got really really sick the first time. This time, he was getting close to panicing again when we stopped in Chaco Canyon, my mom watched him, suggested he try a dramamine, and he did fine after that! So, that means he can travel again!

And he *loved* the desert environment of northern New Mexico. So do I. So, while it may be a while before I can get him back to the mountains of Colorado, I think I may have better luck getting him to Canyonlands, Arches, Bisti, Grand Canyon, and so on -- other places I wanted him to see as well.

But watching him at both Chaco Canyon and Aztec Ruins was so fun. For only the second time in all of our vacationing, he kept disappearing -- which means we were moving too slow for him because he wanted to see more and more and more and I haven't seen him so happy and excited about visiting somewhere in a long time. The only other time he's run off and I've had to try to keep up with him was when we went to the Air and Space Museum. Usually he just tags along behind me instead of showing an active interest. But he loved it!

And I love Albuquerque. I'm starting to learn my way around that town, after the visits the past few years. I think I could move there and be happy.

I'm not happy to be home -- wasn't ready to come back yet. But I *was* very happy to return home to my kitties.

DH is still up in Albuquerque for the next week for his conference.
