Hello!!

My name is Norma, and I'm a bad food blogger. Sigh. I attempted to do a food journal a number of trips ago and fell off the wagon after about 4 days. I somewhat redeemed myself with participating in the "we're coming to you live!" thread and now I'm going to attempt my own again. My trip is only 5 days, so it's not so long that I can forget to update right?? Right!?! Oh, and the parks are closing mighty early so I'll have time to sit in my room and update so I've got that going for me too :)

This trip is a reward for surviving "peak season" at my work. Things are finally calming down again, so I'm rewarding myself with some good food and HOPEFULLY some good weather. I'm from about 40minutes outside of Toronto, Ontario so needless today today (January 2) is pretty chilly!

I'm no stranger to Disney dining, and debated getting the DDP but I now have a TIW card so I intend on using that baby for all it's worth. My travel dates are January 14-18 and I'll be staying at the Polynesian **swoon**. I can't often afford deluxe, so when things work out and I can...I definitely take the opportunity and run with it! I'll be travelling by myself, but will have some wonderful friends meet up with me for meals and hopefully spend one day with me in the park.

Enough of that babble, I know you want to hear all about the eats. My ADR's, as they stand right now, are:
Lunches at....
Liberty Tree Tavern
Le Cellier
50's Prime Time Cafe
Yak and Yeti

Dinners at...
Raglan Road
Flying Fish Cafe
Captains Grille
Citricos

Of those, 3 are completely new to me so I'm pretty excited. I AM having a 50's Prime Time dilemma though.....I'll be solo and it probably won't be as much fun...but I want something in that area (either HS, EPCOT, or BW area) for lunch.....part of me is wondering about The Fountain at the Dolphin, has anyone been there?? Is there anything else you'd suggest, or want to see food from that I could look into switching that ADR for?

*** UP NEXT: Pics of past dining...just for fun! ***

Sounds like you'll be eating pretty well when you go. We went in November and had a hard time with picking something different at hs. We ended up at mama melrose and the food was good and the service was fantastic. You could always take the walkway from hs to epcot and maybe try the rose and crown pub or via napoli. Both are very good:thumbsup2

OK here's some pics to hold us all over (after this I'm going to get some lunch because just looking at these made me hungry!).

That's me! And a certain chipmunk..... Selfie taken at the Garden Grill, I loved the food there but I know many that don't. The characters were fantastic, so even if you don't love the menu if you're looking for great character interaction this is the place to go.

Bananas Foster Angel Food Cake - served with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream $7.49
From Boatwrights...obviously mine is not Bananas Foster but I put this in as proof that all you need to do is ASK when you want something different....the fresh berries instead of the bananas were fantastic!

This is Artist Points new trio platter...or as I call it "death by 1000 meats". This was amazing and I ate the whole thing. There's buffalo, venison, and wild boar sausage on here. You'll end up with the meat sweats, but it's worth it!

You can find this at Sleepy Hollow in the Magic Kingdom. I believe it was called the "Presidential Sweet"? It's fantastic, you will likely see more photos of this from my trip.....to all the dentists out there that will get future business because of this item - it was worth it.

And lastly...for now....

The Tandoori Chicken sandwich from Sanaa. Served on Naan bread, this is possibly one of the best things I ate that trip. For anyone on the fence about Sanaa (or any AKL establishment), go and try it. Some of the most flavourful and delicious options on property.

Also....does anyone know how to get smaller pictures???

Following along! :)

Thanks! Can't wait to share with you!

I've looked at Mama Melrose and have thought about that one too. What did you get (if I can ask)? I think I like the look of their appetizers and flatbreads....

Chicken parm.was very good. My son got the flatbread but he is a very picky eater so his flatbread was xtra sauce with hot pepper flakes only. No cheese. The reason I would go back was because they went out if there way to give my son what he wanted. Even if it is weird. They have an excellent cheesecake too.

Or you could move the Captains Grille meal up from dinner to lunch, and then pick another dinner instead if that would give you more flexibility with locations. Narcoossees? Back to Artist Point? Something completely different like Olivia's?

Honestly, though, my #1 lunch pick at DHS is always Starring Rolls. Even on DxDP, where it's not the most cost-effective use of a credit, I like the sandwich, I appreciate getting chips AND fruit, and I LOVE the bakery case choices!

I've done Captains Grille for lunch before and really wanted to try their dinner menu. The thing keeping me in the HS/EPCOT area is my Fastpass+ in HS (It's the only way I'll get on Toy Story Mania I'm sure). Might check out Olivias for lunch though, and then head over to HS...I've heard good things about that one.

I'll also check out the Starring Rolls menu, you had me at "bakery case" ;)

There's not much "menu" to Starring Rolls. For lunch they offer 2 sandwiches served on big tall wedges of focaccia bread: turkey or ham. I prefer the turkey because it has an extremely light salad dressing on the lettuce. The sandwiches are pre-made but are fresh that day, and one of the tips about Starring Rolls that I learned on the Dis is that when they're gone, they're gone. The location is open until about 3 but they often run out of sandwiches by 1 pm. If you search on the boards (try one of the live dining threads; Barb put great indexes on them) you can find pics. I think they also have some of the pre-packaged Disney sushi but I can't tell you anything about it.

But the bakery case. Ah, the bakery case. With choices including the bigger-than-ginormous Red Velvet and Butterfinger cupcakes, and seasonal specialties, and eclairs, and tarts, and....and......and..... yum!

Quick update!!

So I'm packing and I realized I never updated my lunch swap. For my HS day, I went from having a ressie at Tokyo Dining...then changed it to Via Napoli...then changed it to 50's Prime Time...and now I've changed it AGAIN!

I'll be trying out Fresh at The Dolphin. I realized I rarely see food reviews from Swan or Dolphin spots and thought this would be a good time to check it out. I can walk there from HS, or start in EPCOT and take the boat over. The menus I've found look like a good lunch option and what few reviews I've found (seriously....few...maybe 3?) have been very positive. Also, Disney Food Blog seems to indicate that it has an unlimited dessert buffet....umm yes please! The review is a few years old so hopefully it's still there!

T-3 days....

Sigh, I'd warned you I'm a bad food blogger right??

I've been back home for a few weeks now and had a great time on my trip. Just now getting around to uploading on photobucket and will try to post everything in the next day or so. A few changes were made to my original dining plans which I'll update about as we go along. First up though:

Liberty Tree Tavern

I came to Liberty Tree Tavern for lunch as I had a FABULOUS lunch there a few trips ago. I met up with a dis-friend and her husband and we had a great meal and really good server. I felt safe going there as a solo-diner and had been craving the sandwich I'd gotten on my first trip for a while so I thought it was a great idea.

I thought wrong.

This was by far the worst solo experience I've ever had at WDW. At check-in the lady was incredibly rude. Not just to me, short with everyone, so I didn't take that personal or anything. Actually it was rudeness day I think, as the flight attendant on my flight to MCO was a snappy lady too (though she was extra friendly with me once I gave her my magazines I was finished with). I waited around about 10mins past my ADR time, which is no big deal for me, it's a nice environment there. But I felt like being in a chair, I was in the way of other, bigger, families so eventually I just stood up so "true" families could have the spot. I also feel bad being there as a Canadian. Everyone gets the "welcome the Smith family, from the great state of Iowa!!" and then you get to a Caunuck or anything else and its' "Smiths from Toronto?!"...It does make me laugh though so I really can't complain.

When I was finally seated I was given quite possibly the worst table in the building. It was a small two-top under a set of stairs (I think they go to the bathroom?) and right beside where the servers all seem to stand and stare at their tables to see if people are done eating yet. I had people on top of me at all times and felt incredibly uncomfortable. I know as a solo diner I can't expect the greatest table in the joint, but come on, that table shouldn't have even existed. My server was also not the greatest. I had to repeat my drink order 3 times (A Sprite please) because he was too busy looking around at other tables to hear my first request. He didn't come by at all after taking my meal order except to clear my plate, which I didn't entirely mind because I felt like I wasn't getting Disney service anyway at that point. It could have been that I was tired from the trip down that morning, or maybe he was having an off day, or who knows, but I felt that he was short with me....and to be honest he didn't seem overly attentive to his other tables either.

For my meal I ordered "The Liberty Boys BLT - Slow Roasted Pork, Fresh Greens and Tomatoes on House Made Bread and Caramelized Shallots and Mushroom Mayonnaise Spread. - $14.99 "

It really is one of the greatest sandwiches. It's a little greasy, and it's not bacon...it's pork belly! It's so good, and a great lunch. The sandwich made it worth going to be honest, but if it weren't for the yummy the whole event would have felt like a waste. Also, those fries are the best fries in MK...if they had a takeout window just for fries, I'd be eating them all trip long.

I really wanted to try a dessert, but I wanted to get out of there even more so I just got my bill as soon as I was finished, paid and left.

Would I go back to LTT?? Absolutely! I love the food and that's what makes it worthwhile for me. Would I go back as a solo-diner? Probably not. It' kinda ruined my solo-dining for a few days too because I was once bitten twice shy over the whole thing. It caused me to change some of my other ADR's at the last minute which got me charged with that lovely 10$ fee Disney now has but oh well, my comfort is worth 10$[

Up next:

Raglan Road

It is completely impossible for me to write an unbiased review on this place. Raglan Road is easily one of my favourite spots on Disney property, and definitely my favourite in the DTD area. I met up with one of my greatest dis-friends for dinner here. The reservation was under her name, which happened to be the same last name as the hostess....this got us seated right away at "a great table". The great table turned out to be Kevin Dundons favourite table...we were sitting down right as he was going to sit too...it had a reserved sign for him and everything! He was very gracious and insisted we take the table which was a hightop right by one of the bars. It had a great view of everything and our little celebrity brush gave us a lot to be giddy about for the rest of the meal. Side note, the last time this friend and I ate together we sat at the table next to Pam Brandon from the Disney Parks Blog and had a conversation with her about Salt and Vinegar Fries.

On to the food
For an appetizer we split "Scallop Forest - Forks of battered scallops served with a lime dipping sauce. - $15.00"

As you can see, it's more of a Scallop Shrub. I saw other tables get the true "forest" presentation so who knows what happened with ours. This is a great appetizer and the dipping sauces are SO good. I'm glad we got it, BUT, we're 99.99% sure it made both of us sick. I was up most of the night tossing my cookies (or scallops as it were) and she was apparently unwell much of the night too...and this is the only food we had in common. I'd still order it again though, so it must not have been that bad, lol!

For our mains, I'd never seen mine on any online menu before. It was the:

This was SO good! I've never had Goncchi before so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect but I was very happy with my choice. I usually order the Lambo so I thought it was time for something different. It was a nice change!

My dining partner had the "Bangers & Booz - Guinness & onion bangers on mash, topped with caramelized onions & beef stew - $18.00"

I seem to remember her saying they had a bit of bite to them, but were really good.

As much as I wanted dessert as well, I was absolutely stuffed. Great entertainment, great food, great drinks...just an all around good place to go. If you don't have park tickets but are still looking for a meal/experience to remember, give Raglan Road a try sometime!

Today's lunch was supposed to be Le Cellier. As I said in the previous post, I was up sick all night so I didn't really want such a heavy lunch. I cancelled my ADR and managed to get a Fastpass+ for lunch at Be Our Guest. They definitely still have some kinks to work out with the Fastpass+ (example, I had ordered my meal online ahead of time but they couldn't find it). Ordering there was a bit of a disaster but once you're ordered and get seated it's a great experience. I was underwhelmed with the building to be honest, I know a lot of people love it but to me it was just a nicely decorated cafeteria...maybe that's just the room I sat in though. Since I had a Magic Band I didn't get a rose but they still managed to get the food right to me.... big brother is watching lol!

I really wanted soup, but thought I should go for something I know I can handle - stomach wise. I went for the "Carved Turkey Carved Turkey- On a warm Baguette with Dijon Mustard and Pommes Frites - $11.19 "

Let me start by saying I was not a BOG believer...never had any interest in going, but thought I should try it out. OMG this sandwich has made me a believer. It was amazing! The bread was almost like a garlic bread in my opinion, fries were good, and the portion was a good size. It was easy on the tummy and so delicious. I'm sad I didn't get back there this trip for another, but it's on my list for next time.....that lineup outside is worth this sandwich.

For dessert, because I felt like I had to at least try it, I got "The Masters Cupcake" which was basically a chocolate cupcake with "Grey Stuff" icing

Beautiful right?? I took a bite, and texted my friend immediately after "Try the grey stuff! It's....flavorless!". I wouldn't order this again, I thought it had a chemically taste to it (like Cool Whip) and was turned off by it. The chocolate cake part was fabulous though so if you're a chocolate fan this would be a good thing to try!

Up next: Teppan Edo!

Signing on and really enjoying your reviews Norma! We're also about 40 minutes outside of Toronto, in the Newmarket area. :thumbsup2

Sorry you had such a bad experience at LTT, it's one of our favourite places too. I had to LOL at your reference to how they announce Canadians. It's sooo true! :lmao: Hopefully your next visit will be better.

Raglan Road is always on our "must-do" list. It hasn't let us down yet. I had Kevin's Heavenly Ham last time and it was to die for. We also tried the new Sunday brunch and it was equally wonderful. Your gnocchi looks so good, and I can't remember seeing it on the menu when we were there in the fall. The description sounds delicious, good to know it tasted as good as it sounds.

Glad you enjoyed BOG, and your sandwich does look good. Sorry FP+ didn't work out. I think there's still a fair number of glitches Disney has to iron out to get this service running smoothly.

Looking forward to more reviews! :goodvibes

Thanks for joining in! We live so close to eachother! I'll be reading your food journals when I finish mine up!

Dinner tonight was supposed to be Flying Fish. I changed it for a few reasons:
1. My dining partner ended up needing to work
2. I still wasn't feeling too hot from the night before (and thought the richness of Flying Fish might kill me)
3. I still wasn't thrilled about the idea of dining alone

I was able to snag a last minute ADR for Teppan Edo. As a side note, canI just say that I actually love this new 10$ reservation deal they have going on. It makes it easier to actually GET last minute reservations since people aren't hoarding 3 at a time and deciding at the last minute which one to show up to. Anyway, I went for Teppan Edo because I knew that it'd be easy enough on the stomach and I'd been there solo before so I wasn't too intimidated.

I was sat with a family of two small kids, a dad that was totally into it and a mom that seemed like she was annoyed to even be there. BUT I was also sat with another family of two parents and their daughter who was closeish in age to me and on a CP from the UK so we managed to have some great conversation and it was an awesome meal. I don't have anything like Teppan Edo where I live so I think of it as a treat to be able to go.

For my drink I got Sake. It was delicious, crisp and had a pear like flavor. I can't remember what it was called but it was a "feature" and I imagine that feature never changes so look for the pic of it...it's in a pink bottle.

For my main I got the Filet Mignon. It comes with noodles, veggies, and rice. It also has dipping sauces with it. They've changed the rice since I was there last, and I must admit I prefer the white rice to whatever they had now. It was a little odd to me, but there wasn't a ton of room for rice anyway so it didn't make or break the meal.

This is a hard meal to photograph, so here are some pictures for your viewing pleasure, I apologize in advance for how ugly this food porn is:

Up next: Fresh at The Dolphin

Today I started at Hollywood Studios and then ventured over to The Dolphin for lunch at Fresh.

I chose this for a few reasons, mostly because I rarely see any reviews from here and those I have seen have been for breakfast. The menu I found online had some great sounding soups and sandwiches on it so I was eager to try it out.

Imagine my surprise when I get there and find they make salads. And only salads. There are three main salads they do, and then a build your own salad for 15$. I almost walked out to find a real meal, but then I remembered how much my body really needs some veggies in the middle of a trip and how much I dislike Disney salads usually. If I do a create-your-own I only have myself to blame right?

The seating area was really nice and open, and the kitchen was also an open kitchen which I always appreciate. Here's the seating area

For the build-your-own you can choose from a LOT of options to make whatever salad you want. I chose: Iceberg lettuce, rotisserie chicken, mushrooms, red onions, cheddar cheese, cucumber, croutons, tomatos, and buttermilk dressing. I was told by my server that they make the buttermilk fresh in house, so that was exciting too...I love me some good creamy salad dressing.

After a little bit of a wait, I got bread service (which was quite tasty) and then this showed up at my table

It was huge. And delicious. But mostly huge. It was hard, but I finished the whole thing. I felt awesome after eating it, I really do neglect my veggies while on vacation.

The service here was amazing as well. I had the nicest woman as my server and would go back just to see her again. She was wonderful, she should be working in a Signature restaurant.

The absolute best part of Fresh? Guys, they have a dessert buffet. Dessert. Buffet. And it's not like the dessert parts of regular buffets that have little shot glasses of mousse, these were all fully plated desserts and you could take whatever you wanted. I justified having two desserts because I had a salad for lunch, but looking back I should have had three, lol.

This was a raspberry-passion fruit dome. It was delicious, very light and creamy with a bit of zing from the sourness in the raspberry sauce.

My second dessert was

This was a sour cherry tart. Between the two, I don't know which I liked more. I think I'll have to go back again to be sure :P

I would HIGHLY recommend giving Fresh a try if you like salad and are looking for a change from regular theme park fare. It'll be on my list for my next trip for sure.

Dinner tonight was Captains Grille! I've been here for lunch before and loved it. They have these Salt and Vinegar Fries that should be illegal they're so good. My dining partner and I had hoped if we smiled real pretty they would give them to us for dinner (we tried, they won't), but we still had a great meal. Our server was....very enthusiastic....which is good I guess. I did notice near the end of our meal there was a dad and his son (maybe 7/8 years old) at a table and the dad walked away to take a phone call. The food came out and the son seemed like he was going to get up and leave and the server stopped him and told him anything he needed she would bring for him and he should just wait for his dad to get back. I REALLY appreciated seeing that. I was happy that she would look out for this little guy when his dad for whatever reason wouldn't/couldn't.

We were seated at a table near the door, but Yacht Club is so quiet it you could really have a table in the middle of the lobby and not have a problem.

Anyway, on to the food!

We did the whole three-course shebang this time. By dessert we were force feeding ourselves, but dammit it was all so good we couldn't help it!!

For my starter I got "New England Clam Chowder - Creamy chowder with clams, potatoes, and veggies. - $7.49"

It was delicious. I've only recently started liking clam chowders so I don't have many to compare it to, but it was good! And I love the little crackers it comes with...I like to be able to chew my soup so I always load it up with crackers.

My friend got a Gnocchi that doesn't seem to be on the menus online. I do know she loved it though, and the portion was a good appetizer

We both got the same main, which was "Cabernet -braised Short Rib - corn risotto, and corn cream $24.99"

This was delicious, but a huge portion. No knives needed here, it fell right apart it was so tender. The sauce made the dish, the risotto was a little undercooked to me but I probably just got a bad batch. No complaints though, it was a great meal.

Desserts were winners too

Myself, I got "S'mores Tart - with graham cracker crust and chocolate sauce $4.99"

The marshmallow part was amazing. I would go here just for dessert one day. It blows 50's Prime Time Smores dessert out of the water.

My friend got "Hazelnut Gianduja Chocolate Cake - salted caramel sauce and chocolate crispies $5.99"

If you like chocolate, look no further. The portion looked small-ish but once you started eating and realized how rich it is you understand why.

This meal was a win for me. I'd probably go back for lunch next time instead of dinner, but ONLY because of the Salt and Vinegar Fries...like I said, should be illegal.

I can't even remember what lunch was supposed to be today, but it ended up being QS in park. I have a problem with the Fried Shrimp at Columbia Harbour House. I love it. I need it. I want it. All. The. Time. It's terrible for you, but it's so good. I don't even LIKE shrimp and I love this stuff. So for your viewing pleasure, a plain plate of fried shrimp:

The real win was dessert though. I ventured over to Storybook Treats and found this beauty

How on earth did I not know this existed before this trip?! It's "Strawberry Shortcake Sundae - shortcake topped with vanilla soft serve and strawberry topping $5.19". It's so good. So strawberry-y. I'm torn between this and the Presidential Sweet as my new fave MK snack.

I made sure to save lots of room for dinner though.....Citricos!!

This was supposed to be dinner for 3 but ended up being dinner for two. I met up with another dear dis-friend and I was so glad we had the chance to have dinner together. I don't see my Disney friends nearly enough, so I love the time we do get together.

I had a starter of tomatos and buffalo mozarella. It also had romaine lettuce with green goddess dressing and anchovies. Ew. I'd hoped they'd be chopped up and in the salad..but no...they were just sittin there on the plate...hanging out...hoping I'd eat them....I did not.

I avoided the anchovy and really enjoyed the dish.

My main dish was "Oak-grilled Filet of Beef - Spanish Onions, Peppadew and Banana Peppers, Quattro Formaggi-Potato Puree, and Glace de Viande $43.00"

This picture isn't the most attractive but I need this dish in my life more often. The mashed potatoes were fantastic, I will be looking for the recipe online soon. The steak was done perfectly for me (medium-rare) but I've never had a problem with Disney and steaks before. I'd never been to Citricos before but it's lovely.

DESSERT!!

My friend got the "Lemon-scented Cheesecake - with a blanket of White Chocolate Ganache $9.00"

I didn't try this, but I have it from many sources that this is to die for. I got the "Tasting of Gelato - featuring Italian Vanilla Bean, Cappuccino, and Raspberry $9.00"

How cute is that presentation?? The raspberry was delicious, and the cappuccino was just perfect. The portion was a great size too, just a tasting of each. I'd highly recommend this, especially if you're full from dinner but still want something sweet

Well that basically wraps out the food part of my trip. The last thing I ate was from Captain Cooks at the Polynesian. I got the pulled pork nachos. They were awesome but best shared with a friend or three...the portion is huge!!

This was a quick trip and it had its ups and downs but I might try to do this every January. It's a good reward for surviving the holiday season! Thanks for joining me for these reviews, let me know if you have any questions about any of these meals!

My two sisters and I went to Raglan Road about a year ago and one of them got VERY sick that night as well. She was feeling very good before that. She spent the whole next day in bed and did not feel very well for a few days.

I know what you mean about LTT. We are also from Canada but we just say we are from Canada. Last time we were there the lobby was so noisy that we didn't even hear our name. I do like LTT a lot though but I only go for lunch.
