I'm Going To Regret This, But....

Actually, we are staying off-site this year and plan on spending 9 or 10 days at the parks. If we didn't have APs, that would cost $90 or $100. Not exactly a few dollars.

However, I understand your point. I guess it's a matter of perspective.

I told my friends that I didn't see the problem, as they are only taking a parking spot that the onsite guest was entitled to but didn't use. If they save enough money in the week to eat dinner or get an extra souvenier, good for them.

We routinely give away fastpasses that we can't or don't want to use to perfect strangers. Are they entitled to get in the fastpass line even though they didn't arrive early enough to get them? I see it as no one is getting hurt, so they can have them. The same with a parking pass. Kinda. ;)

The onsite guest is only entitled to it if they have a vehicle or some other reason they made need one.

Hey, can I jump in the Poly pool since some people who are staying there are at the parks and not using the pool as they are "entitled" to?

Just my 2 cents worth I don't think they should even charge for parking in the first place with the cost of tickets now. Just like I don't approve of toll charges on the highway with what we pay for a new sticker every year. Its just highway robbery and greed.

Then they would just build it into the cost of the tickets or collect that revenue in some other way. Disney has earnings per share expectations.

You may not like it, but when you go to Disney you agree to play by their rules. Not only follow the ones that you like.

Can you imagine the price hike on park passes if they decide to not charge for parking? Just like your budget at home, the money has to come from somewhere. You may say that they are just lining their pockets. Well, duh! They are a business, that is what they are supposed to do. Don't like it, don't go.

Sorry to go off, but I don't understand people who think that rules are meant for other people, not themselves.

Looking for opinions. If you are staying offsite with a rental car and friends of yours are staying onsite without a rental, would it be unethical to use a resort parking pass (or a room key) given to your onsite friends to get free parking?

Yes, it would be unethical.

To the best of my knowledge, Theme Park Patrons have not banned together as a group and set down a Code of Ethics. The "ethical" thing is not always the morally correct thing, either. Ask a lawyer. :)

You make a business deal with Disney. If you can find a way to save yourself a few bucks, do it. That is what business is all about.

If you think of the Disney company as a family member or friend and consider any attempt to not give them every cent they ask for as "cheating" them, then by all means, pay for your parking.

If you were to give money to your friend and the car was rented in their name, then technically you would be parking "their" rented car in "their" rightful parking spot.

If you ask for a parking pass they will give you one. I asked for an extra one for my DD even though she was a CM. I'd also get her a room key. It's an ethical question. They won't question if you ask for a parking pass.

if his onsite friends have the dining plan or their room occupany level is the most for their room, they won't be able to get another Resort ID. At times we have been asked for our parking pass and Room ID, too.

Just ask at the front desk of the resort and see what they say. When we were at the Contemporary, we had friends that were offsite that visited us a couple of days. We asked at the front desk how we should handle that, ie, if we needed to sign them in at the guard shack or what, and they told us it wouldn't be a problem, issued a visitor's parking pass for them, and told us to have them place it in their window.

Hmmm, yeah. I would ask at the front desk. Tell them you'll be connecting with friends on a few occasions throughout your stay and ask if you can have a parking pass for the car.

Comeon... it is NOT the same as pool hopping. I highly doubt that this time of year it will come down to there NOT being enough parking spaces!

Give your friends a ride to the parks... or let them use the car once or twice... then "technically" it's their's, too, isn't it?

I agree with the sandwich analogy. It someone gives you a sandwich that you can't eat... are you going to throw it in the trash?

You are not making a "business deal" with Disney. You are agreeing to pay for something that they provide. So if you decide to "save" yourself money by not paying, it is more like shoplifting. Maybe it is not something that will get you thrown in jail, but you are still taking something you did not pay for.

Again, I would ask at the desk. They would probably let you do it if you ask, but they may not. But it should be Disney's decision.

Please...no, I don't think of Disney as family or friend. I think of them as a business that sells me a product or service on THEIR TERMS OF SALE(whatever that may be in this situation)-not mine.

Why not have your off-site friends pick you up and take you to the parks with them? Then you would be able to honestly say you need a parking pass. You would be with them, so it wouldn't be cheating.

If the onsite guests, as part of the fee that they pay for the priviledge of staying onsite, are entitled to a parking pass, then they should get one and give it to their friends if they want to!

Look at it this way: They are not going to receive a discount on their room rate for the $10. a day it cost to park because they DON'T have a vehicle. They are paying for the pass, in their room rental price. If they want to give it away, it is their's to do with as they please. All they have to say is "Oh, and we get a parking permit too, right?" I doubt that the CM would even question if they had a car after that.

If the off-site guests are using the parking pass to visit their friends AT THEIR RESORT then it really is a non-issue and the parking pass is a courtesy to allow them ease in visiting.

If the off-site guests are getting the parking pass simply to get free parking at the theme parks then IMO they are in essence stealing from Disney.

People have been arguing that as a resort guest you get the parking pass so you are entitled to a parking spot. And that is correct, however, the resort parking pass is meant to entitle that guest to a parking spot at THE RESORT. In addition, parking at the theme parks is complimentary for guests staying in a WDW resort hotel. To keep lines moving, rather than check for a resort ID, the CMs at the toll plaza simply look for the parking pass on the dashboard and wave resort guests through. Just like they've done with parking at the monorail resorts, if Disney begins to see a trend where there are an awful lot of extra resort parking passes being distributed they will take steps to prevent abuse of the parking passes and begin to require both the dashboard notice AND a resort ID card which will then inconvenience everyone.

I guess I'll just use the words of Jiminy Cricket to help everyone on this issue..."Always let your conscience be your guide."

I really don't see an issue at all with giving someone your parking spot.

How about this as an example - I pay for a package that includes seats to a sporting event, dinner at a steak restaurant, and parking in the city. I really don't care about the restaurant because I am a vegetarian, and I decide to take the subway because it's more convenient.

What difference does it make if I give my parking pass and my restaurant voucher to my brother? The voucher and the parking are already built into somebody's business plan...and I paid for the right to be there.

I'm a rule follower by nature. I almost always drive within the speed limit. It never occures to me to block a handicapped spot...in fact it infuriates me to see people who do. That hurts someone.

I pay my taxes, tell the truth, etc. But I do get confused when some people on this site get so self-righteous and angry about the supposedly "questionable" actions of some, who do no harm to others by their "objectionable" actions.

I'm not a real Bibical-type, but I can't help but think of that quote - "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

I love Disney, but its not a sacred cow to me. Live simply and do no harm is a belief system that works better in my opinion.

Happy Parking.
Peace.

Well, the OP did ask if people thought it was ethical to give someone else the parking pass. So to me there is at least some little part of them who thinks it may be wrong. Why post a question if you do not want answers? :confused3

Almost every time a question of right and wrong is posted, someone uses the "cast the first stone" argument. Which is just silly. No one is perfect. But that doesn't mean that we should ignore others when we think they are doing wrong. Again, the OP asked for opinions. Not for people to just tell them what they are doing is right.

And Disney is not a "Sacred Cow" to me either. But in planning a Disney vacation you need to take into account the cost of everything. Including parking. If the cost of parking makes it impossible to take that trip (and I don't think that is what they are saying) don't go. It is not OK to decide for you to what you need to pay for and what you don't.

Again, if the OP asks at the desk they will most likely get another parking pass. But if the resorts are at capacity, maybe not. Disney may care, they may not care. It is up to Disney to make that decision. Not the individual.

Well, I told them just to ask about the parking pass at the resort.

But I did tell them to:

-Pool Hop
-Bring Last Year's Mugs
-Take The Kids Out Of School
-Read Park Maps While Standing In The Middle Of Main St. USA
-Take Lots Of Group Pictures That Require Blocking Off Large Sections Of Various Areas
-Rent Strollers For 14 Years Olds and ECVs For Perfectly Healthy, But Lazy Friends
-Send The Kids To Other Tables During Character Meals So They Get As Much Face Time As Possible
-Recite The Narrative Out Loud For Every Ride They Go On
-Take Lots Of Pictures During Philharmagic And The Ariel Show
-Do Not Move To The End Of The Aisle In Various Theaters
-Have The Kids Kick Every Character They See
-Wait To Decide What They Want To Eat Until They Get To The Counter
-Encourage Temper Tantrums And Wild Screaming While Waiting In Long Lines
-Bathrooms? Pee In The Bushes
-Smoke Freely Throughout The Parks
-Put On Cheerleading Outfits And Break Out Into Annoying Cheers For No Reason In The Middle Of Any Park

You all agree with that, right? ;)
I would hate to start another debate....

The only thing I can say about this is that when checking in, the CM will ask if you have a car and would like a parking pass...it's up to the guest to say yes or no. CMs wouldn't know otherwise.
