Well I am so excited. I have been working with a HGVC member to trade a week at DVC for a week in Hawaii. Well, the HGVC member has been able to secure the week for me. I have 5 of his 7 days secured (need to wait for 7 month window on the rest).

We are staying in a 2BR ocean view room the Hilton Hawaiian village on Waikiki. Yes I know Maui and Kauai are more peaceful and pristing, but we are more "on the go" type people. I can't see spending a week at the beach.

Although DVC didn't make the exchange for me, it made it possible. I really don't think I could have gotten an ocean view room in Hawaii with many other timeshare in an even trade.

That is awesome Robin!!! We are hoping to exchange for Maui in the next 2-3 years! :)

Have a great Hawaii trip..........aloha!

Sounds wonderful..How did you arrange a trade with another nonDisney owner. Did you do it through TUG? I have never used their website even though I paid the $15 dollars to become a member.

Aloha! I am not sure I understand your comment about chosing Oahu because you didn't want to stay on the beach all day. For the most things to do, I would definately chose The Big Island of Hawaii or Maui or Kauai. I get a bit bored with Oahu.

Yes, I had my name added to the TUG Direct Exchange List. I got quite a few responses, but I was very particular in the resorts I was willing to accept. I wanted TUG ratings which were comparable to the DVC properties.

As for Oahu - I bought the "Hawaii for Dummies" book. It had a quiz in it to determine which island would fit your vacation style. We completed it and it came back as Oahu as first choice and Hawaii as a second choice. We are hoping to take a day trip to either Hawaii or Kauai.

A day trip to Kauai would be doable from Oahu, but to the Big Island would be difficult because of the size and having to decide which airport to fly into. If you take a day trip to Kauai, be sure to do a helicopter tour! Kauai and Hawaii are the BEST for those!

I'm glad it worked out. I'm assuming this is your first trip to HI and if so feel Oahu is perfect for this. The Hilton HI Village is in quite a nice location and I think you'll enjoy it there. We lived directly across from it for two different 2 month stretches (arriving and departing) during our 3 years there. There is a lot to do and many things you will need to do at least once like the Pali, Punchbowl, Diamond head, North shore, BYU HI campus, Poly Cultural Center, AZ mem and the like.

If you do a trip to another island, I'd recommend Maui if you only do one. Instead of doing a day trip, maybe do it as an extra day or two add on. Many times you can get air fare with a car and a few days added. There's no restriction for having to get a hotel for each night of your stay and I think 3 days is the min to qualify. You could get the special air fare, 3 nights total, interisland and a car for likely little more than you could get the air on your own. If you're planning to use FF miles, call at exactly 330 days (or whatever your carrier's cutoff is) from the departure date and again at the first day for the return date. Good luck and enjoy.

Thanks for the tips Diane and Dean

Diane - The thing we would do on Hawaii is the Volcanos. If we did Kauai a helicopter tour is the top of our list.

Dean - Yeah this is our first time to Hawaii. Most of the things you mentioned are on our list. We probably only can do a week there, and the room in Wakiki is "paid for" so I hate to have it booked and pay for a room on Maui. Althought Mike and I are hoping to come back "as a couple" sometime and do one of the more remote islands like Maui or Kauai.

My wife and I had the pleasure of spending our honeymoon 4 years ago tomorrow, a week in maui, a week in kauai, and 3 nights at the hilton hawaiian village. it was great. you cannot go wrong. i would suggest maui for a few extra days as Dean suggested. i thought the week in kauai was a little long.

enjoy your trip.

That's why I suggested adding extra days rather than taking days you've already paid for and spending much of the time in the airports. Besides, I'd never go to HI for just a week unless I were in a West Coast gateway city to start with, it's just too long to justify the trip back and several days or jet lag for a week.

I am looking at a direct exchange at Embassy Vacation Resort in Maui for 2 ea 1 bedrooms for next fall. Does anyone know how this resort compares to DVC? I am looking at the 2- one bedrooms rather than a 2 br because of occupancy. I have 6 adults & 2 small children. She wants to trade for a 2 Br at BW or OKW for Oct 04. Does this sound like a fair trade? Anything I should know? And thanks Dean for the tip re: ff tickets as I am going to try to use as many as possible. Am I better off trying for into Maui at the 330 day mark or settle for Honolulu & pay for the interisland trip? I want to stay 2-3 nights in Honolulu anyway to show main things to kids who haven't been. I stayed at HHV Hotel before, would I be better to try for HGVC 2 br exchange? Sorry so many questions, but thanks for the help.

Several thoughts as I did that exact trip in 2002 with a week at the Embassy Maui with two 1 BR units and a week on Kauai at the Embassy there in a 2 BR. I scheduled flights with Delta and flew into Maui then out of honolulu (by choice). It was easy but you've got to remember to make the first leg at the 330 day mark then call back for the return trip.

I got the Maui weeks through an Independent exchange company called San Francisco exchange. I did join for 3 years at I think it was $99. You don't have to get the pay membership but you get a few benefits if you do and I don't think the free membership gives you the search first option. You can keep calling though to see if they have what you want. You can do search first or deposit first. If you do deposit first, you may be able to get two 1 BR for just one deposit due to their generous bonus week program. They get a lot of Embassy's and HI in general. You also may want to talk to Trading Places who also get a lot of HI. Remember that many of the 2 BR units in HI, and in general, only sleep 6.

The Embassy has few 2 BR units so the odds are in your favor for the 1 BR. Still no guarantee on getting both so take one when it comes and schedule a cash reservation then cancel it if you match the second. The units there have a good minikitchen. It's far better than the DVC studio, more like the DVC studio should be. The unit we stayed in had a King bed plus a pullout. I think, but I'm not certain, that some of their units have 2 full beds in the master. You also need to know that the door between is louvered so not as much privacy as you might think. For your party, I'd actually prefer a 2 BR plus a 1 BR. You may also want to look for direct exchanges to there or other places and consider One Napili Way which has 3 BR/2 BA units though it's a little quieter.

Here's what I did. I put in a request for HI using II directly, a search first using DVC, a search first using SFX, a direct exchange add on TUG and contacted several other independents including Donita's, Platinum Interchange and TP. I had several other options but nothing that felt good. I turned down SOK and the Schooner because I didn't think they would be up to par for what I wanted.

The Embassy on Maui is somewhat of a strange bird. It is unique in color, very pink. While technially on Kaanapali beach, it's not part of the complex and you have to go around to get to it. The Kaanapali shuttle does not go there. It's a high rise hotel with some units timeshare and others not. I suspect they'll go all timeshare as they continue to sell. You will get a mountains, Star market view if you exchange in and they will offer to upgrade you for cash. They have a buffet breakfast that is one price for the unit. If you get both units in one name, it should be one price for all like you were in one unit, that's the way they did it for us. When I asked about it they said of course it's only one price but there were only four of us and you have 8. It was a good deal but got old quickly. For 8, I'd say do it if you can get if for the one unit price and NOT if they want to charge you for two units. DO NOT DO THEIR TIMESHARE TOUR. Good luck.

Congrats on getting Hawaii! Hilton Hawaii Village was awesome when we were there 10 years ago, before they built the timeshares (and before kids!). We want to do Hawaii in 2005 and I might try TUG for a trade!

Thanks for all the info Dean.

While I would love to add a few days, DH will only have about 7 or 8 work-days of vacation. We are going to blanket our vacation with a few days for travel plus a stopover in California to help with the jet lag. (And to fulfill a promise to DS who wants to go to Disneyland).

Robin
I'm so happy for you.
My husband and I spent our 10 year anniversary there. Well we stayed at the Sheraton. We did a day trip to the Big Island to see the Volcanos.
Take lots of pictures...
Have fun. You will always remember it..
