They'll be going on next Tuesday (the 14th). I already have the spacers in to get my teeth ready for them. I'm kinda nervous even though this is the 2nd time I'm doing this. I had them on originally from 7th grade to get this sophomore yr in COLLEGE!! Am I crazy for going through this again? The problem was my teeth came in super slow - so it was a major waiting game and by the end of it the quack orthodontist gave up hope on me. Didn't even give me a retainer for my bottom teeth (and being the defiant teenager I didn't wear the one for the top)

So I'm now 23 and have a feeling that I'm going to get a lot of strange looks. Anyways - wish me luck!!!!

I had them for about 18 months in junior high. My teeth had shifted back by the time I was in college. I'm 39 now and if my dh ever makes voting staff at work I'll have free orthodontia and you can bet your bippy I'll be getting them again! I'll also demand a permanent retainer behind my teeth.

I know a lot of adults with braces on, you are not the only one!

I'm 33 and I have braces for the first time in my life! Very few people even notice ( I have clear ones on the top) and even my best friend does a double take and says " I always forget you have those!" :)

Im so glad I have them and I cant wait to see how nice my smile looks when they come off!

Good luck!

I have seen many adults wearing them, so don't sweat it. In fact, my kids' ped has braces on and he is in his early 50's!

Why do you need to have spacers before the braces? Is it because the teeth are too close together? I ask this because my DS is having the top braces put on in 2 weeks and his orthodontist didn't mention anything about spacers.

I got mine on for the first time when I was 25 (almost 26) and I got them off before I turned 28. Ideal time? No. Didn't get too many strange looks, maybe because I look much younger than I am?

Anyway, there is a lady who works with me that is in her mid-fifties, and she just got braces......gold ones! They aren't the normal silver, they are bright gold; not just the ties, the actual braces and wires. She gets comments all the time!

RitaZ--not everyone has to get spacers, I'm not sure what they're for, but if your DS needed them, I'm sure the ortho would have put them in!

RitaZ - The spacers are put around the teeth that are getting the metal bands (in the back). Another issue with my mouth is that it is really small. When I go to the dentist they have to use the kids stuff on me. So my teeth are very close together. I guess if you already have the space around those teeth then you wouldn't need the spacers. Good think he doesn't - they kinda hurt!

I have them on still... I'll be 26 next week =) You'll be surprised that alot of adults have them.

Good luck!

You won't get weird looks. I work with some adults who have braces. I've considered getting them myself.

Good luck!

I am 34 and have braces for the first time. I realized I had to get my teeth straightened, as my badly crooked teeth were holding me back socially and professionally. I had the braces for 18 months already, with another 18 months to go. Just had an adjustment today - OUCH!!! I actually don't see too many adults with braces, as most adults I know already had braces as kids and have beautiful teeth now.

I applaud all adults here who have braces, as it is not an easy thing to do!
