I won't buy. Like I said, most of the money I am talking about is in retirement accounts. They have automatic purchases, and I'm fine with that. No way any intermediate or short term money is going into this roller coaster ride.
Poor DD22 has saved from her college jobs and her first year of employment and decided to open a Roth IRA - she opened it Tuesday just in time to watch it sink on Wednesday. I said, "Don't look!!! You have 45 years until retirement and you will make yourself crazy."
Bless her heart - a hard lesson to watch as it unfolds but I hope it will be something she remembers in the future when other downs (and hopefully ups!) occur!
This is exactly how I am viewing it. I put in a mutual fund buy order yesterday that was $9 less per share than my original investment. If the market stays low over the next few weeks, I'll continue to do the same with any extra cash I have.
The market will eventually improve, and if it doesn't, we'll have a lot more to worry about than our investment portfolio.

Very understandable, especially since you have a child in college. We are pretty much the same with auto deductions and our extra money is going towards to emergency fund and college savings as well. (Although with the price of groceries & gas there isnt much extra these days!)

Don't get me started on groceries and gas. That's a whole other thread. My emergency fund is set, but I have been sadly remiss in contributing to DD12's college fund. DD18 is draining all my resources. I have been contributing extra toward mortgage principal lately, so hopefully if we sell the house (in 5 years or so), that will cover DD12's college.
I know how you feel. Right now my family is living with my in-laws and I was planning to take a 12 month loan from my 401K (a total cost of fees and interest totalling less than $200) to buy a small inexpensive condo in about 6 months. The way things are going now it is going to take me another 6 months to a year beyond what I planned before I will have enough to pay cash for something. It just makes me sick and MAD!!
