I will NEVER let my mother forget that she once told me - "wait until you get older, your skin will dry up and you won't have oily skin". Well, thirty something years later I still have it.

I wash with Neutrogena for oily skin, but on astringent, mineral makeup and one hour later I am all oily. I blot several times during the day with MK oil blotters and I 'm still oily an hour later.

Does anyone else have this problem and what do you use????

Di:confused3

My skin is the same way. I am 35 (36 in June) and have the oiliest hair and skin. On a good note, people assume that I am ten younger than I am, so maybe my oily skin is aging well. My mom is the same way and at 65, her hair and skin is still oily, so I am not holding out much hope...

I wash with baby wash in the morning and use concealer and translucent powder. During the day, I will blot my skin with the blotting papers or blot the worst areas with a cotton pad with a little astringent and apply more powder. I haven't had much luck with any washes targeted at oily skin as they seem to overdry my skin temporarily and then it gets that much more greasy to compensate. I like the J&J baby wash as it cleans but does not strip away too much.

Don't laugh but in all honesty this is what I use - Milk of Magnesia.

I buy the generic CVS or Walmart brand (unflavored, the blue bottle) and foam makeup circles (the cotton ones get too messy). Shake the bottle really well and use the foam circle put a very light coating on your face. It dries to a faint white powder. If you look like a ghost, you've put on too much. Let dry and put on makeup. Rinse the foam circle and let dry - you can get about 2 weeks' use out of one circle before it gets too stiff.

I started using this a few years ago after having a friend recommend it as a much cheaper alternative to Proactive. I laughed, and then figured it would only cost about $5 to try and the rest is history. I also put a thin coating on at night when I know my monthly cycle is coming as my skin gets more oily and prone to breakouts during that time. Using it at night after washing my face does a great job preventing breakouts.

So there you go. (You all can stop chuckling now...) :rolleyes1

ETA - I just hit the big 4-0 too so I know what you mean about hoping to have outgrown "teenage skin" by now! Ah well, chances are we won't get wrinkles...

What is in Milk of Magnesia that makes it work? I am not familiar with it, so that is why I am asking.

Thanks - Diane:cool1:

Honestly, I have no idea why it works. But my logic is that if it's safe to drink, it's safe to put on your face. :thumbsup2 Must be whatever the "chalky" ingredient is that absorbs the oil.

Forget the astringent. You are drying out your skin and the oils are forming to protect it.

After you wash, use a nice non-comedogenic lotion before you put on your makeup and I think you'll find you are a lot less oily each day. (I use Lubriderm 15 spf in the bottle with purple lettering, nice and non-greasy and absorbs well and protects against the sun).

I second the use of Milk of Magnesia! I've been using it for over a week and you wouldn't believe the difference. I also use the Clinique 3 step cleansing with the number 2 toner (for combo/dry skin). I think that keeps it from stripping my skin since I'm really oily in the T zone and normal on the rest of my face. I also use the moisturizing gel instead of lotion, but have to add a little Loreal revitalift on my cheeks at night. I also dropped my Clinique foundation and tried Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse foundation. THAT made a big difference, too.

I just had to wait another 10 years for my oily skin to go ago. I'm now 51, and suddenly battling dry skin! (If it isn't one thing, it's another:sad2: )

I never did find a cleanser, but I wore Revlon's Colorstay foundation (the smudge-proof stuff). It was the only makeup that didn't slide off my face in the summer.

I agree with this. You can wear it under makeup and it absorbs the oil. You can put it on and sleep in it and it is like a nighttime mask.
Also, if your skin is at all ruddy, the light *coat* of MoM seems to even out the skin tone and act like a primer!

I read about it in the book "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me" book by Paula Begoun (sp).

I am going to go buy some M.O.M. I too at 43 have super oily skin and hair. My Dad whose oil I inherited always said that when I was 50 I would appreciate it. Dad is almost 70 and not a wrinkle in site. My girl friends are botoxing, juvederming, microdermabrasioning (sp;) ) "peels" etc and I just wash and very lightly moisturize.

Me, I use Cetaphil facial cleanser and Cetaphil moisturizer. I have had good luck with these products.

I also use Mary Kay mineral makeup and I too have a real problem with shine throughout the day - I'm going to the drugstore posthaste!

Ok Im going to buy some MOM now :rotfl: I am 31 and had a hystorectomy at 29 and that has really did a number on my skin. However even before that i had problems with my skin. Recently it's been oily and breaking out more. I just ordered some avon cleanser and moisterizer and some Mineral makeup from another place (not avon).

I am not familiar wit this foam circle.. what is it ?

What mineral makeup are you using? Some brands have mineral oil in it!

Also, check your neutrogena- it could have hidden oils in it, thus making you use it more to clear your oily skin! Until I went to a dermatologist, I had NO idea. I can look up those other names in a bit.

I use dermalogica dermal clay cleanser. It clears pores and helps my oily skin. I have the dry skin problem, which makes my skin produce oil to help the dryness! Ugh. I also use Bare Escentuals- using the mineral veil as the final step keeps me oil free all day!

I am going to try this!! Same problem; I'll be 39 next month and have been plagued all my life with oily skin and breakouts!

I wonder if something like that would work as well for my 13YO daughter; she uses AcneFree currently which seems to work pretty well for her, but it's EXPENSIVE!

Thanks for this tip :thumbsup2

Exactly,
there is a difference between oil
and moisture!!!

They come in a plastic bag - they're foam (white latex or latex-free) sponge circles, maybe 2" in diameter and about 1/4" thick - generally used for applying makeup. They come in various shapes: wedges, circles, etc. I find circles easiest to use.

Ah, here's a link to what I'm talking about:
http://www.kosmetech.com/item.asp?idProduct=245&idCategory=11&idSubCategory=11

You can buy them at Walmart or similar for around $3 for a pack of 12 or 16 (I don't remember exactly).

Thanks for the picture - I thought that is what they were but wasn't sure. I can't wait to try this method out.

Coming from a family with the tendency for oily skin, I have found that the Murad brand works best for me. My mom (who is in her 50s) also has great luck with that system. She has oily, porous skin, but it is also very sensitive. We both love the Murad and have been using it for years. I went off it for about a year or two thinking I had fully exited all of the tragedies of adolescence (ha!), and my skin looked horrible. As soon as I went back on, it was fine.

I agree with another poster that the Bare Minerals line is great for makeup. Also, Tarte cheekstains are my lifesaver and stay put on oily skin and in humidity.

Never tried the milk of magnesia tip, but it seems interesting. Just be careful not to use harsh ingredients and alcohols on your skin b/c that will strip too much oil causing you to produce even more sebum. It's a delicate balance.

Good luck!

I also have very oily skin and I use Estee Lauder's Sparkling Clean Purifying Mud Foam Cleanser.

I also used the lotion along with it, but in a pinch I had to use Oily of Olay and that worked really well, too, and for half the price, so I just use that after I cleanse with the above product.

So, am I NOT the only one who still gets breakouts? What to do with THAT?

wow! Add me ot the list running out to get M.O.M. from Walmart....only I did not escape the wrinkles....I'm 46, still get breakouts and the constant oily skin and the wrinles too. DH is gonna think I've lost it for sure when he sees this new beauty regimine..lol....
