I'm a night owl...is it permanent?

My entire life, I have so not been a night person. During this last pregnancy, it seems I have become one and still am.

It is 12:15 and here I am...wide awake.

This would have been really handy in college or when my first three children were born. But it is handy now too. Movers come in a little over a week and I will be good to go.

I am totally a night owl. I swear I have more energy at midnight than I do at 2 in the afternoon.

I've been a night owl my entire life. I just can't seem to get the hang of sleeping at night. It kills me during the school year. I sleep from about 5 PM to 12 AM (if at all), so the school day (8 AM to 3:30 PM) is afternoon-evening for me. The summer is so much better just because I can sleep when my body wants to.

I wish I could give you advice about how to change it. I've tried more methods than I could detail here, including talking to a medical doctor. He prescribed sleeping pills the last time, but they can be addictive and if I stop taking them, my body reverts right back to wanting to stay up all night.

I've been a nightowl since high school and it got even more pronounced when I was in college.

Lisa, how far along are you?

Definitely a night owl! I usually get my energy kick around 10pm. With a baby in the house who still gets up at night it's a killer when I finally fall asleep and then get woken by him. And then of course morning comes way too early with 3 little ones!

I'm guessing stress is the cause and once we move and are with my husband again---I will sleep easily.

I was thinking insomnia...but I still get between 6 and 8 hours of sleep.:confused3

The same thing started for me about a year ago... It is near impossible for me to fall asleep before 12am or 1am, with 2am my preferred bedtime.

I've also, coincidentally, recently begun being able to go 18-20 hours on only 4-6 hours of sleep. (An 8 hour night now feels like the days in college when I would sleep HOURS!)

I don't know what the deal is, but summer (longer days) doesn't help.

For those of you who want to change, have you tried melotonin? It helped me in college(after one week of my roommate coming back late at night slamming all the doors and screaming to talk to her friends, I showed up at the medicine shop going "I need sleep. Help me."). What's nice is it's what your body naturally produces to help with sleep, and it's non-addictive.
