How often are Illuminations Fastpasses available same day? I plan to have my first 3 Fastpasses completed by around lunchtime on the day we go to Epcot, and was hoping to then add a 4th FP for Illuminations.

Illuminations doesn't need a FP+. The WS is so incredibly massive, you can get a prime viewing spot literally last second. We were there for this 4th of July and even then we only showed up 10 minutes early and got a good spot (it was crowded, but still plenty of room). Use your FP+ for other things.

We got FP's for it last year literally a few minutes before it started. That's the only way I'd do it.

It's been good every time I'm there but if you want to do anything else that has 4th FP availability, I'd do that before getting Illumination. Definitely not at noon or 1. 5pm or later . . . maybe. And even then as others have noted, depending on when you're going you can often get after 8pm and worst case scenario is you don't get it and go to one of the many locations just as good or better than the FP spot.

Given an early breakfast, we're hoping to have the main Tier 1's all done before lunch, and a couple of Tier 2's That would then free us up for that extra Tier 1.

Now we're taking. How big is the Fastpass viewing area? I should have mentioned, we are a party of 9, but hopeful that will be available at noon.

It's the area between the 2 gift shops as you walk in from Future World. It is slightly slanted so you can see well, even from the back. There were only 3 of us so finding room wasn't a problem. You may want to get there a bit earlier with 9 if you manage to grab a FP. If you don't get a FP, there are tons of other places to watch, like the others said.

I think a party of 9 has almost no chance of same-day FP for IllumiNations. The good news is that it's pretty much a crap FP, plenty of other excellent viewing spots around the lagoon without it.

Totally understand, however what I'm saying is that it's completely unnecessary anyway. Use an extra Tier 1 for TT or Soarin' or FEA (yes, you can get them same day). An Illuminations FP+ is really useless. You can see it from anywhere around the WS, and the crowd isn't stacked 10 deep. Even for a party of 9, you can walk up at 8:59pm and get a great spot. Really.
