We will be at the 8:15 CP, will we have trouble getting from there to the Illuminations Dessert Party, or are the crowds at that point so intense that we won't be able to move?

If you are not there when the party opens (hour before?) you will have difficulty getting a table. We were a little late when we did it last year and got the last table to stand at (no chairs).
Not too worried about a table, actually paying just to have a reasonable view of Illuminations during a crazy busy week. Just worried about even getting there through the crowds. It starts at 9:30 so if we get out of CP at 9:00 it sounds like we should at least get there.

I don't think you'll have a problem. Even on very crowded days, Epcot isn't like the MK, where viewing areas for Wishes become gridlock. Open spots along the fence will be several people deep, but you can still walk the walkways.
I snagged a FP for Illuminations as a sameday FP on Sunday afternoon, and it was a very nice experience (same view as dessert party, I believe, just the other side of the shop.) I hung at the back, and because the area slopes down to the fence, it was a lovely view.
