Illuminations Cruise Question

Where does does the boat go before Illuminations starts? Do they take you over to MGM to get somewhat of a view (I know it can't be much) of Fantasmic!,and then back to the IG?

We took one in 2004. You board at the Beach Club/Yacht Club marina. Then you cruise past Swan/Dolphin, go by MGM and then back again. Then the boat parks under the bridge and you watch the fireworks from there.

When we went we did not see Fantasmic

The only part of Fantasmic worth watching from the lake would be the finale when Mickey is atop to mountain with the fireworks. Otherwise, the show is completely obscured by the trees.
