Illuminations and wind

I've seen a few people post that the wind direction will blow ashes/smoke and sometimes block your view of Illuminations. I'm not always the best with directions and maps so maybe someone can clarify. I'm thinking that you would NOT want to be near showcase plaza or Canada/England if the wind is out of the N/NE. Does that sound right? What are some good veiwing areas on the south or west side? :flower:

I imagine that is the common place to get a alot of smoke and or ash. Last Tuesday night, I was watching illuminations in front of Japan and got my first ever unpleasent blast of smoke/ash. The wind was blowing just right, I guess because it has never bothered me before. My wife and I had a difficult time seeing the ending. It really stings your eyes pretty good if you get caught in it.

So... when did they replace the huge fire blasts with the difficult to see water effects? It is a cheesy effect at night.

The best solution here is to watch the flags, trees and other wind indicators as you're strolling World Showcase. Then move to any location except downwind of the display. The Florida winds can change often and I've seen it change sometimes within the last 30 min before the show.

You'll definitely notice after the show starts if you are downwind, and if you are move. The smoke can be quite thinck and can't possibly be good to breathe in.

I think some of the recent missing fire effects you are observing are due to the damaged Illuminations barge that is out of service. That happened a few weeks back and to my knowledge is still out of service. The water effects haven't changed since last time I saw it.

The simplest way to determine wind direction is to check out the fire torches located all around the World Showcase lagoon. The torches are lit well before the start of Illuminations.

Another note... If you want EXCELLENT fireworks pictures (and have the camera / knowledge to do this), you definitely want to be DIRECTLY upwind which will limit the smoke in any picture.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tips on figuring out wind direction. I hadn't heard anything about the barge. :confused3 Hopefully we will find a good spot without the smoke/wind.

You can find out much information very quickly about many things if you use the Search here on the boards.

I just put in "Barge Explodes" and found this:
