Illegal or just unethical?

Bought some undies today at a well known store. They were buy one get one free, marked $8.00 each. So they will end up being $4.00 each. This is more than I usually pay for undies but I really prefer this kind. Anyway, I got them home and when looking at the tags, if you scrape off the $8.00 price tag it says $6.00 underneath. Did they MARK THEM UP to then put them on a fake sale? I am really irritated by this. I do not buy this brand often so not sure if the regular price is 6 or 8 but it appears to be a bit of a scam. Thoughts?

Maybe before they marked them down to buy one get one free they were marked down to $6.

The $6.00 is the original price tag. There is an $8.00 sticker on top of it. It was an outlet store. I feel ripped off. It is about an hour away so I dont think I will be driving all the way back but I am writing a letter to corporate. I think it is a scam.

YOu will have to at least show some evidence that merchandise was marked up for the purpose of the buy one get one sale. For example go back there and see what the same items were priced at when there is no sale going on.

At one time, in some states, once an item was marked with a price, that particular item could not be remarked with a higher price.

Just another side here. I work retail and do most of the price tagging in our store. There have been times where I've put the tag on the item before I changed the price on the gun. So, the person tagging could have meant to mark them $8 but put the $6 on instead and then rather than pull the $6 off, just put the $8 over.

Just another thought.

I won't agree that it was deliberately changed for the sale, that would be illegal. Maybe the $6.00 price was a misprint on the ticket, though it should not have been covered with a sticker of the new price. My company's policy would be to make a new ticket when the original's price is lower than it should be...whether due to printing error or price increase.

I guess to me, you paid $4.00 per pair, which is still a better deal then the $6.00 or $8.00 per pair that is marked on them.

Some stores don't double dip discounts, and this is an instance that I would consider B1G1 of the reduced price of $6.00 a double dip.

The ORIGINAL tag attactched to the undies says "Cacique" the size and the regular price of $6.00. It is not a sticker it is a tag attached. The STICKER that was put on top of the $6.00 is $8.00. So the 8 is an obvious sticker.

Items getting marked up and then being put on sale happens all the time. As long as the price that comes up on the register isn't higher than the sticker, it isn't illegal (at least in PA).

Not illegal at all. I know where I work we have been marking a lot of things up lately. The cost of cotton has gone way up, so we are marking many items that contain cotton up. As long as the markup was not done for the purpose of putting the item on sale for a different price, nothing illegal or unethical was done. Maybe the outlet store purchased them tagged that way.

Retailers can charge whatever they want. The are not obligated to sell at MSRP or at the original price. Good business would say that they should have removed the tag however.

In the 70's my grandmother worked for a now out of business company called Polskis. She told me that she would spend the afternoon before a dollar sale marking products up to a dollar.

I don't think it's illegal... it's just tacky.
