8yo DS's school bus driver is ill. She has been out for a couple of months, he recently came home and told me that he thinks she's not coming back and that she has a serious illness. He asked if we could send her a gift. How sweet is that?!

In any case, I called the transportation office to verify (hey, you never know if kids have the most accurate information.). They confirmed she is ill and that she may not come back. I didn't ask for specifics about her illness, don't want to intrude - but I'm not sure whether to send a fruit basket, gift card, or something else. I don't know if her illness is such that she has any food restrictions, so I'm leery to send any food. Plus it has to be non-perishable since I'd be dropping this off at the transportation office.

I'm thinking of asking DS if he'd like to make a card for her, and then maybe a blockbuster gift card? Any ideas would be appreciated!

Send a nice blooming plant that is easy to care for. If she can't get out and about a Blockbuster card or any gift card may be hard for her to redeem.

I think that sounds perfect!
Very kind of your Ds :)

Thanks for the input. A potted plant sounds like a great idea - maybe we'll do homemade card, a plant and a gift card!

How about some scratch off lotto tix? They are always fun to get! Who knows she might win a few dollars!

A GC. She probably has lots of medical bills and lost wages, so the extra money would really help.

Oooh scratch off lotto tickets are fun to give! A good friend of mine and I gave some to the cafeteria people at work for Christmas (along with GCs!) and one of them won $45.

I've got some good ideas here, now I have an excuse to shop tomorrow.

I agree, money would probably be appreciated. That way, she could use it for groceries or utilities...or the mortgage.

Can you arrange to have some meals sent in to her/her family?

Clearly I don't know the details of her home life, but that might help?

Could you really go over the top and arrange some sort of group contribution where several (many?) people join in to have dinners sent to her home for a period of time?

These were also some of my initial thoughts - but I don't know the details of her illness/home life and I didn't want to intrude by asking too many questions at the Transportation office.

I did consider asking at least our neighborhood parents whether they wanted to go in on something - and I may still do that. I just want to get something small to her this week, since I know she's been out a while and thought it might be nice for her to know some of the kids are thinking of her!
