Anyone have any experience with IKEA kitchen cabinets? We are going to remodel the kitchen in our beach house and I"ve read a lot of positive things about IKEA's product. We are only interested in the cabinets. We will get flooring, countertops, etc. elsewhere.

Any feedback would be appreciated! If you installed them yourselves, I'd love to hear about that too.

Thanks!

We just redid our kitchen using ikea cabinets and it looks awesome. We are not very handy people and it was a breeze. It was also our first experience assembling ikea cabinets and it was simple to assemble and install. Every one who sees or touches our cabinets are in complete awe. We went with drawers instead of tradition shelf style for our lower cabinets and I love them

We have them in 3 rental units and no problems what so ever.

First cabinet will take the longest to assemble. After that it is a breeze!

DH loves the way you install the wall cabinets with a hanger bar instead of trying to hit a stud on each and every cabinet.

We bought a fixer 3 years ago and put Ikea cabinets in. I'm still very happy with that decision as they look great. They are very easy to assemble and fairly easy to install. Like a pp said, they are MUCH easier to hang on the bar system than to try to hit a stud. We did that in a small condo we bought many years ago. It was hard to get the upper cabs in and my husband is very handy.

We just finished a kitchen remodel with Ikea cabinets and are very happy. Find out when they go on sale at 20% or 15 % off. We used their software for design and reviewed plan with sales staff. We also had them pull and deliver the 17 cabinets. They came in 175 packages. Check you tube for videos. Check garden web kitchen for various photos.
Great to bring cabinets in one piece at a time. No way could I install a pre- assembled cabinet. I used a light duty hyd car jack to lift uppers to rails.

Yeah, check out gardenweb.com for pictures and ideas.

We didn't get Ikea as we don't have a store around here, but there were some amazing kitchens on gardenweb and according to the people who did them, they are pretty good quality for the price.

Wow everyone! Thanks for the replies!

I've read a ton of positive reviews of the Ikea cabinets, which is why I wanted to ask about them here. It's nice to know that they are also fairly easy to install ourselves.

I think we are heading over there tomorrow to check them out. Thanks too for the heads up on the sale! I'll be sure to ask about that since we aren't in a hurry to do the kitchen.

Thanks again all!

We have IKEA cabinets in our house, and we just picked out a second set for our In Law apt. We love them. There are tons of positives about them. You can make shelves or drawers in each cabinet. If you change your mind later, it's inexpensive to get another and you can walk into the store and buy it that day, not wait six weeks to order. If you want to change out all the doors for a different look, you can, easily and inexpensively.

We used a design service that works specifically with IKEA. It was money well spent, as they came into our home and helped us with ideas that we might not have thought of on our own, to maximize space. They also emailed us a blueprint which came in handy for exact measurements for the electrician, countertops, etc. The same design company also had the option of someone coming in for one day to help get us started with installation ourselves, and again, money well spent. My DH studied cabinetry in school and still, they were a little tricky at first to work with. He can now easily do our second set on his own, and we just used the software in the store this time, too.

LOVE my Ikea cabinets. LOVE

They are so much nicer than anything else in the same price range. I swear, having deep drawers instead of bottom cabinets is the best thing that ever happened to my kitchen. And the corner cabinets are great. And the pantry . . . I could go on and on. They are beautiful and hold up very well.

We did not do our own install, I'm pretty DIY but that one intimidated me. We found a local company that specialized in Ikea and they put together blueprints, ordered the cabinets and handled the installation.

I like the idea of the design service, but we are working with such an awkward footprint that I don't think they would come up with anything we haven't thought of already. The current kitchen has hardly any counter space except for the island (which currently has a cooktop in it). There is about 18" to the right of the sink and maybe 30" to the left of it and that's it.

We are swapping out the cooktop on the island for the sink and putting a range where the sink was. The room has three walls (it's open to the family room) and all 3 walls have doors in them opening to other spaces (garage, laundry, and sunroom/eating area). Thus, not much counter space. We are sticking with the layout of the cabinets as they are and just replacing them. Plus it's a shore house, so we won't be cooking much there anyway.

DH is very handy, so installing them ourselves isn't too scary...I hope!

Thanks for everyone's help!

Two more tips. Don't forget to check the as is section. In Seattle we enter past the self-serve cash registers and head right towards the As-Is section. You can get a better look at the cabinets there and see if any of the doors you like hold up well. We liked one style in photos but in person they banged up real easy. I also got a cheap narrow cabinet to use as a template for the "real" ones. When we had the design down we did find some discounted parts and one cabinet that we used.

Then get a map and look for "short-cuts" to get to the kitchen section without having to cover every inch of the store much of which you might not care about.

LOVE our Ikea cabinets. Our house just sold. The kitchen was a major draw for buyers. It sold in 4 days. We are getting ready to build another house and MUST have more Ikea cabinets. We also purchased granite and appliances from Ikea. The granite was great. The appliances I wouldnt recommend. Only had our house for a year and already probs with appliances. We hired an Ikea assembly service to put the cabinets together and our builder installed. LOVE those pull out pantries. :goodvibes

I LOVE ours!! We put the Adel cabinets in Thanksgiving weekend. I put the cabinets together, dh put them up. That part was very easy. We had some issues with the rest of the kitchen, though! LOL We got our cabinet hardware (pulls, knobs), counters, etc, elsewhere. You will be totally overwhelmed by the number of boxes you will get. We borrowed an enclosed trailer which was great because we could just leave them out in the driveway until we put them together.

The bottom drawers and pull out shelves on the bottom corners are awesome! I got the off white finish and they are so easy to clean up! I can't tell you how many times this summer I found red popsicle mess dripped down my cabinets hours later. I freaked out, but it just wiped right off!

Hmm... we were considering getting the appliances from them, so maybe we should rethink that. Thanks for mentioning it.

Glad to hear so many positive comments on the cabinets. We went to see them today but I got a call from the school that I had to pick up my neighbor's kid who was sick. I'm the emergency backup for the parents and they left on a trip today. Her parents weren't arriving at their house until later.

Oh well...

I think the appliance issue is unfortunately true with wherever you purchase them. The guy at Sears told us the life of a fridge is 7 years? Unbelieveable!:scratchin

I think this is true as well. We just bought a washer and dryer from Lowes and the guy there (who has been there since we began buying appliance from them 15 years ago) told us average life of a major appliance today is 7-10 years. Yet they cost more than they used to...:scratchin

Guesss our parents are right! They really don't make things like the used to!

Too true
My parents had the same washer/dryer for 35 years. She hated having to buy a new set. My husband and I bought our daughter a 1948 Chambers stove for her retro kitchen. It works as well today as it would have worked in 1948. That is not the case with new models.

Wondering the same thing about the IKEA cabinets, how long do they hold up for? are they made of pressed wood?:confused3

Mine have held up beautifully.

They are made of pressed wood, but to be honest, so are most cabinets these days, even some you would not expect like many of the lines sold at Home Depot and Lowes that don't appear to be pressed wood. Solid wood cabinet boxes would easily cost you 4 to 5 times what Ikea cabinets cost, so IMHO there is not comparison, they are two different products for two entirely different budgets. If you want to re-do your cabinets for less than 10,000 I think you'd be hard pressed to find something better than Ikea. Or, at least I was.
