Ikea Kitchen Cabinets?

Hi all,

We will be updating our kitchen this next year and I am looking for a way to save a little $$ in the process. My kitchen is 30 years old. The oven is kaput and only two burners work out of four. The cabinets are warped and couple of the doors are cracked. Its time!

I have looked at the Ikea cabinets and really like them. They are cheaper than any other cabinet option out there. But I have to ask, are they the cheapest for a reason? Anyone have any experiences with Ikea kitchen cabinets?

Thanks!

We have a few cabinets from Ikea that my Dh turned into a serving/ snackbar area. we love it and the price was right.

Our IKEA cabinets are pushing 20 years old now. They are the base model (aka cheapest option) and the cabinets are still in very good shape; I have wall, base, and large pantry cabinets. The decorative strip that hides the particle board construction is starting to come up on a few door and drawer front edges, but that's the most obvious sign of wear and a little glue would fix it. We've definately gotten our money out of them and I almost wish they looked worse or were more of a problem so I could justify replacements (probably from IKEA).

I use to work for ikea for 6 1/2 year, I worked in the sofa dept. not the kitchen dept., but many of my friends use to and still work there.

Like any ikea furniture it is just particle board construction, however where the price range came in to play is in its exterior veneer finish. I have put together a few kitchen for friend over the years from ikea, and as long as you put it together correctly in the beginning, it is just as good and any other prefab kitchen on the maker.

However saying that, if water was to ever get under the veneer which is can easily. Then that piece will have to be replace. And also with that I mind ikea is well known for changing they kitchen cabinets sizes once in a while too, so even thou you may have a ikea kitchen now and something happens to a piece down the road, you may not be able to replace that one piece without replacing the whole unit.

When we were looking to move (before the big crash), we looked at so many houses that had been bought up by flippers. Without fail, the flippers would put in an IKEA kitchen for a pittance and then add an extra $50K to the house's price tag.

In my mind, IKEA kitchens just scream "I'm CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAP". Also, if you intend to eventually sell, you'll be competing with hundreds of comparable homes that also have cheap IKEA kitchens.

My recommendation: Spend a little more money and go to Lowe's/wherever and get it done right.

My good friend has Ikea kitchen cabinets, she's had them for at least five years and they look great.
