II Short Stay/Williamsburg,VA

DH and I are headed to HHI resort next week and are contemplating a slow, lazy ride home to NJ...we are toying with the possibility of trying a short stay [3 nites] at a Williamsburg property.

Has anyone ever exchanged for one of the Williamsburg properties and can recommend to stay or not to stay there? Am wondering if the hiway coupon books can be just as cost effective. We paid $50/nite for a miserable HoJo there last year with the coupon "special".

Any suggestions will be appreciated. Really just can't wait to get to HHI and Signe's!

We live in Maryland and go to Williamsburg regularly. We own a small point contract with DVC but a bunch of Wyndham Points. For a three night stay in Williamsburg we would normally do an II exchange with our Wyndham points. If you are planning on using your DVC points I don't think you would get a very good value. But you are within the Flex Exchange period so any deposit into II can pull any available inventory. But they question is what do you have to trade? And do you have access to II without going thru Disney? I did a quick search on II and this is where I would stay in the next few weeks.

There are many other great places in Williamsburg, we also really like Wyndahm Governors Green.

Another possibility is to use Hotwire.com to book a hotel. They have a three star hotel in the area for around $59 a night. If you haven't used hotwire before make sure you read all the terms.

Several thoughts. You could look at a Marriott promo stay for 3-4 nights or so. You could bid on priceline using biddingfortravel.com as a guide. If you know someone who is an II member they could get you an entire week for under $450 for a 2 BR at the Marriott there which is a ways out or at say the Westgate in the Historic district. You could also trade for partial weeks using DVC but if you're looking at weekends, it's fairly steep in the range of 166 points for a 2 BR for 3 nights. You could look for cheap rentals on redweeks or TUG or look at the TUG last minutes listing board if you're a member there. If you have hotel reward points you might be able to use them somewhere.

We've stayed at the Marriott Ford's Colony. Very nice if you can get an upper level villa in the original complex (I'd rate the furniture and kitchen fixture quality of the two bedroom we stayed in there two summers ago as better than anything we've had in any DVC property). The latter complex also houses the indoor pool (a nice touch at this time of year). Worst thing I could say about the place is getting there for the first time; the resort is inside a private upscale housing community and the directions Marriott provides to the property are confusing - pm me if you end up deciding to stay there and I'll share the simplified version as well as other tips.

The price this Nov is $279 studio, $389 1 BR, $399 2 BR and $499 3 BR plus tax for Westgate. For many of those getaways weeks the destination resort sets the prices so you'll often see a great resort less and a lower resort much more $$$. The prices in RCI are even cheaper ($219-249) but not as good of choices. Another option for those that don't want a full week might be to find a BG owner as the other resort in walking distance of the historic district is the Patrick Henry which is in the process of being redone. For places with a lot of supply and good resorts like Orlando, Williamsburg, Branson & LV as well as anywhere truly off season, the getaways can be a great choice if you're not one to plan ahead. I'm a planner so I've already booked Cabo for 2010, no way I'd wait on short notice for that situation without a backup.
