II question

We put in for an II trade for fall 2006, but can we also reserve our home resort at WDW using the same points, in case the II doesn't come through? We want to have a back-up plan, and want to go to WDW if we can't get the trade.

Your account does not actually get charged with the points until the trade comes through. If you don't get the trade, those same points will still be in your account, unused.

Unless you did a "deposit first". If so, the points are commited to an exchange.

Dean, we put in for Maui - 3 resort choices, 5 week choices in Sept/Oct 2006. Hoping it will come through... but will we be able to afford airfare by then if prices keep going up??!

Start looking for air deals, if you find a really good one book your air then narrow your search and book a cancelable hotel or condo.

As a new DVC member, I'm trying to get ahold of the whole thing still...so how does one go about doing a "search first"?

I know that many feel it's not a good use of points to trade out, but there are some really great opportunities with the trades...so any words of wisdom on how to find them would be appreciated. If it helps, we'd love to do Hawaii or Europe...not picky really as DS13 says, "I've got a passport now so why not use it?" Ah, yes, he's my son!!!

Well there certainly are some choices worth trading for. The trouble is the owners there frequently don't trade or rent for cash, just like DVC members do. But the main way of exchanging with DVC is to do a request first. You simply call DVC and tell them the dates, unit size and resorts you will accept. You pay the $75 fee which may or may not be refundable depending on specifics. It's best to look at least a year out, preferably 2. They don't take the points until you match and say yes.

It is incumbent on the member to make sure they understand what they are getting and that the resorts they list will be acceptable as many are different than DVC and frequently not up to the standards of DVC. You can only trade for 2 for a studio, 4 for a 1 BR and 6 for a 2 BR. However, many of the units you get may handle more. So if you know the resort you want will handle 4 in the studio or 8 in the 2 BR, you can still accept it. There are a number resorts that are VERY strict on occupancy and a few that will hold you to the above trade occupancy for exchanges even if the unit itself would hold more.
