Between the creepy animatronic Carousel of Progress nuts flying Eastern Airlines, the hippies and parrots on the DI beach singing about drug use, and the adults sucking each others thumbs, that 1978 Christmas Special had to be one of the lowpoints of Disney entertainment history. It's interesting that this special was followed the next year by the release of The Black Hole. It's hard to remember just how much Disney struggled to find it's footing after Walt's death...and it really wasn't until Katzenberg's hiring and the production of The Little Mermaid in the late 80's that the outlook for the studio improved again.

This video clip is from a 1978 Christmas TV show featuring WDW.

On this clip, we are treated to the talents of Pablo Cruise . . .

And, to make things even better, they perform from the beach of Discovery Island . . .

And, also drive all over Bay Lake in an impressive array of watercraft . . .

Wow! There's been a lot of ignoring going on today. I'll have to catch up later tonight, but in the meantime hubby found this link w/some great footage of RC from 1993. The first minute was a little boring as they filmed a little too much from the boardwalk , but, I promise it gets good! Lots of good film of the slides, flumes, pool, buildings etc. Hope ya'll enjoy!

No one needed to see that! It must have been the drug taking, murdering hippies that were in charge in '78. If Dave EVER posts that again, I may be forced to round up a posse of these types of hippies and direct them to TN!

Been too busy and too tired to scan today, but tomorrow is looking very promising! Got what I think is some pretty good stuff to share with my fave fiends! BTW: I am soooooo glad I decided to practice posting pics and asked to be ignored. This has turned out to be great fun for me! Hooray, the golf cart in my ticker is moving....that means the KFK family's trip to the Fort is getting closer!

Also, the shot of the Wilderness Lodge under construction was pretty cool. It is nice to see RC in its hey-day, and the shots of the Kiddie Cove area bring me right back to the days when we used to visit there and my DD's would spend hours just splashing around and having a blast.

It is remarkable to see people crammed in on the White Water Rapids slide bouncing off of each other, and to see multiple kids using the flume slides at the same time, and some going down head first. None of that was allowed any longer when we first began visiting RC in the mid-90's.

These videos both confirm what a nice little water park River Country was. It is a shame that it's gone (well sort-of gone anyway).

KFK hubby gets the credit for both! He did good! After further review, I agree that the first video is better. It gives a more in depth view of RC including the nature walk (which I do remember now that my memory has been refreshed, and yes I actually walked it.) I'll admit I'd rather be swimmin' and slidin' though. The second video didn't even show the pool. I think I got caught up in the catchy tune! After some of the videos around here lately you can surely understand why!

It was neat seeing several people piled up an coming down Whoop n Holler Hollow! Such a thing would NEVER be allowed these days. What wonderful memories of an absolutely perfect water park IMO. So peaceful and it took you back to a bygone era.

Who remembers when you got an actual Guide book instead of those little pamphlets? I loved reading them over and over in the room/camper and planning what I wanted to do first the next day.

Treasure Island (aka Discovery Island) Excursion Stubs & River Country Stubs. Not sure why there are 3 different styles.

WDW Tencentennial News. Check out the pre-opening deal at Epcot.

The Epcot Commemorative Book. It contains info and illustrations (akin to the artwork on the cover) regarding each attraction.

Ohhhhh! I used to love catching a Disney Classic in the theatre. It was all the way in back of the old arcade. Loved it, loved it, loved it! .....and it was only 1 dollar!

Another appealing brochure. This one is pretty bad, but IMO still not quite as bad as the one that took the prize earlier! I did like the Disney Channel logo!

Should be coming into some Fort stuff soon! I'm trying to be selective about what I post as I don't want to become redundant.... so I am leaving out a good bit. Believe me, it's for the best. I would hate for the best thread of 2010 to become the worst thread of 2015!

Thanks for all of the great new scans! You were not kidding about KFM having kept everything, were you? (I should have been a believer after the burger wrapper and fry basket).

I agree with you 100% about the late 70's-early 80's artwork. No wonder attendance at River Country and Discovery Island languished- they sure didn't do a very good job making in look appealing.

While enjoying the videos you linked, I came across a few other gems on YouTube . . .

This is apparently a promotional video for the All American Water Party at River Country. It is remarkable to look at something like this and then compare it to the types of promos played at WDW now:

This video is really long (over 10 minutes), but it shows a lot of River Country. And at least watch the first two minutes to see Goofy on the Boom Swing. Also, at about 4:30, there is a long scene where kids are climbing across what looks like floating log discs- I don't remember these at all. They currently have something like this in the teen area of Blizzard Beach:

I totally believe you.

When I was looking at these, I was thinking how dangerous the whole thing looked. And, as far as I could see, it was a free-for-all, with people moving the discs as others were trying to step on them. I would expect that there would be a lot of face-plants.

The same goes for a lot of the other activities we see on the older videos- diving from the rocks into the pool- people crashing into each other on the slides-none of that would be allowed today, that's for sure.

I also remember that the water at the base of the flume slides was very deep. I know that I could not touch the bottom when standing. Same thing with the depth at the slides in the Upstream Plunge pool. These days, water park slides exit into water that is very shallow.

I'll bet liability issues entered into the equation of deciding to close River Country.

I tried to grab a couple of screen caps from the 1999 All American Water Party video.

This video was produced in the time-frame that the TCD gang was visiting River Country.

But, there are things shown in that video that I sure don't remember.

Like this thing, which appears to be a squirting animal skull:

And this giant floating frog, which obviously was in the Kiddie Cove area:

I remember a giant floating fake log in the Kiddie Cove area- not this frog.

My memory deficits notwithstanding, these old videos sure do confirm that River Country was a fun and unique place.
