If You've Relocated, What Do You Miss Most?

We've been living in SC for almost 2 years now since moving from northern NJ and I really like where we live now but there are certain little things I miss from NJ/Metro NYC. For others who have moved from one area of the country to another, or perhaps from one country to another, what things do you miss from your old home area?

For me, certainly my friends would be at the top of the list but for the smaller things:

I miss NY radio; Scott and Todd in the morning on WPLJ; WFAN and sports talk radio in general. We get ESPN radio here but it doesn't have crazy NY sports fans (God love them) calling in with nutty trade ideas, etc. I really miss that.

I miss Italian food stores where I could get great sausage, cheeses, prosciutto, etc. We had some good ones in northern NJ but the really great places were on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. Trust me, this is not something you get easily in this part of the south. (But boy, do we have great barbecue )

Don't laugh at me--I miss Nordstrom! I loved that store. Oh, the shoes If we're in Orlando, I have to make a special trip to the mall!

There are a few other things but I'd like to hear from some other people. So, what do you all miss from "home"??

I just posted on another thread....I miss my family the most (obviously) but next would have to be the food. During this time of year (Lent), the Polish women at a church on the South Side of Pittsburgh make pierogies the size of a taco! Around here, I had to go to two different grocery stores to find even the frozen brand and nobody here knows about the glory of pierogies unless they've also transplanted. I also miss really good pizza (can't find any here) and really good Italian food. Primanti sandwiches, Quaker Steak & Lube wings, "O" fries.....ooooo, now I'm hungry!

I miss being able to go to the museums in D.C., National Aquarium in Baltimore, and the Metro. When I go visit relatives-there's usually not enough time. I also miss the City Dock in Annapolis and walking around the Naval Academy. I have been in NC since 1998.

If and when we relocate (when we retire!!) I will miss my family the most but hopefully they will just come and visit us a lot!!!

We just moved from Sanm Angelo Texas. I miss our church, and I miss my sons' school. I'm having a hard time becuse the new church and school just aren't measuring up. But I know, it's just me, and I'm really TRYING to keep an open mind!!! Other than that, life is good here in Mississippi.

I realize that the "PC" answer is famiy, but really, being 4500 miles away has it's benefits. You're so far away, you can't "fix" every minor crisis.

The thing "I" miss the most is Bob, who cut my hair for 20+ years. I've seen him twice since we moved, and I swear if I could afford it, I'd be back in Chicago every few months for a haircut.

The other things my d/h and I both miss are all of the wonderful art fairs in the summer, and PIZZA.

You can't get a decent pizza here for your life. Add hot dogs, Italian Beef Sandwiches, little family owned restaurants of every ethnicity to that list. I would love a pierogi right now.

The only thing that saves us a little is that Lou Malnati's sends pizzas and Vienna products via Fed Ex.

When I moved to South Eastern Detroit I missed everything about home. I hated the area. It felt too "big city" for me. I missed the midwest feel of my Iowa home town.

Now we are in Wisconsin and it is definitely where we belong. I don't know if I could ever move out of the midwest permanently.

my dogs, mardi gras parades, king cakes, being able to use french words in conversation without people thinking you're being a snob, crawfish, po-boys, beignets, my concert buddy & going to shows all the time, drive-through daiquiri shops (ha!), and did i mention a good fried oyster/shrimp/crawfish po-boy?

I miss Brian, my hairdresser.

My dentist, but I like my doctor better here.

But most of all, I miss Quebec restaurants. I have not found anything comparable around here.

I miss real french fries. You know, the kind where someone actually peels and slices the potatoes and knows how to cook them? And poutine...if you have had it, you know what I mean. If you haven't, there is no way to explain it.

Figment22 -- What part of SC do you live in? There are two Nordstrom stores in NC, including one that opened Friday at Southpark Mall in Charlotte. If you're anywhere near I-77, you can get there pretty quickly!

Tar Heel--
I'm about as far south as you can get in SC--we're near Savannah, GA and there are no Nordstrom stores here Think of me when you're passing through the shoe department

I can't believe we have been in Florida for 7 months now!

Here's what I miss the most about our life in New Hampshire:

1. My family
2. My neighbors/community/friends
3. Good Chinese Food
4. Living on a river
5. My students from the school I worked at
6. Big houses, lots of land, variety... here in Florida, all the houses look the same - except in Celebration
7. No Sales Tax
8. My favorite stores/ restaurants
9. Always knowing who/where to go for whatever I needed help with... doctors, mechanics, dentists, etc.




What I don't miss:

1. The snow and cold
2. Winter Driving in snow and ice
3. Having to bring my laundry to a Laundromat
4. High cost of real estate
5. faster pace in the north. Life is much slower in the south
6. warming up my car in the morning, 5 months of the year

Moved from Pittsburgh 8 months ago, here's what kills me:

1. Pittsburgh media, radio and tv
2. Downtown
3. The people
4. The snow
5. Being around other Pittsburgh sports fans
6. My parents and grandparents


I am 7 hrs closer to WDW though...

What I miss about living in California (Bay Area)
1. Crate and Barrel (although it's coming to Portland later this year - YES!)
2. Being only 6 hours away from Disneyland
3. Being only 30 minutes away from the beach (Santa Cruz)
4. El Pollo Loco (although Baja Fresh does hit the spot)
5. My friends....although 90% of them have moved out of the area as well

What I don't miss about Califorina
1. The traffic
2. The housing prices
3. Feeling like a stranger in my own backyard
4. Sales Tax
5. The cost of registering my car
6. The brown, I mean "golden" hills (It ain't called the golden state just cause of the gold rush.....the hills are brown for 9 months of the year...ugly)

My parents are off of my don't miss list cause they bought a house here in OR and are up here almost once a month now until they officially move up later this year or early next year.

Yes! I miss this too. There's nothing like everybody getting all hyped up for a Steeler game! Especially those crazies that go shirtless in the dead of winter to paint their chests black and gold.

When I get to my destination I will LOVE

3. A new start.

Moved from NC to FL. Would love to be in a position to return to NC for the change of seasons and friendly people. FL is entirely too hot and horribly muggy! Some people say you become "climatized" after being in FL a while. Well, don't you think 23 years should have been enough??!!

Wow, where do I start in my list???? My list is probably stranger than some, but it comes from living in a foreign country.

I miss my family and friends, shopping malls, Yankee Candle, Target, Kohl's....almost any store, american grocery stores, being able to do what I want in the afternoon instead of everything being closed from 1-3 p.m. every day, going out to dinner before 7 or 8:00 at night, air conditioning and american radio stations.

I moved when I finished university as I got married and my husdand had got a job nearer his family. I was the first person in my family ever to move out of our village!!!! I miss my family the most. Also where I grew up was just a short train ride away from a big city with great shops. I miss that as now we have to drive for over an hour to get to a good shopping centre and still there is not the variety of shops there.

Since we've relocated from Germany to South East Georgia I think what I miss most about Germany is all the good food!! The second thing I would say would be the snow. I love when it snows!
