...here's my Public Service Announcement/Report...

I just installed it and now:

 My computer has no sound. Absolutely none.

 I cannot access my email, because Vista isn't "supporting" msn email. (Same company! :furious: )

 It is running s-l-o-w. And it is just a couple weeks old - it was fast before.

 I can't play the iTunes songs. And not just because there isn't sound. It doesn't even go through the motions of playing a song.

  The Microsoft help people (whose foreign accents are now enhanced with software to make them sound more American - why, I don't know) have no idea how to help me. They keep having me install and reinstall the same things. They're all very nice, but it is making me batty. :headache:

:hippie: But, it LOOKS very pretty. Except for the taskbar (which is a sleek and, IMHO, ugly black), you can customize all the colors the way you want 'em and it really looks so much nicer than XP.

I'm sure that with some time :hourglass they'll get it all fixed up. You might want to wait until then. That's my advice, anyway.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! :) I can get a free upgrade on my new computer and I probably will get the discs, but I think that I will wait for a while to install it. I will let other people muddle through the kinks and then I will follow their directions on how to remedy WHATEVER... :)

I heard the other day that it is a bear to upgrade a computer with and that you are better off buying a new computer that already has it if you really want it. I got a new computer last summer that claims to be Vista ready, but I am too afraid to do it especially now that I read your post. Thanks for the update.

For anyone considering upgrading to Vista you should check the Microsoft site first. See if your system meets the qualifications to run the new OP.

I would check the website of the sound card that you have. They may have a driver written for Vista.

the best thiong about a new operating system,, it lowers the price of the previous version that has been tested, debugged and perfected. whichis why i'll be upgradeing to xp in the next few weeks..lol

There was an article in todays paper about iTunes. I can't find the link to my paper, but here is basically the same article:

IN BRIEF / TECHNOLOGY
Compatibility issues between iTunes, Vista

From the Associated Press
February 3, 2007

Apple Inc. is warning users of its iTunes software about compatibility problems with Microsoft Corp.'s new operating system and has recommended against a switch to Windows Vista until a fix is complete.

"Although iTunes 7.0.2 may work with Windows Vista on many typical PCs, Apple is aware of some known compatibility issues and recommends that iTunes customers wait to upgrade to Windows Vista until after the next release of iTunes, which will be available in the next few weeks," according to a company statement.

I spoke to a very honest salesperson in circuit city last night-

He said that there are many issues right now that still have to be resolved (driver fixes/downloads), software incompatablity... he suggests waiting until service pack 1 comes out in march before attempting anything (upgrade or straight wipe out/ install).

Your right it is a very beautiful system- actually based on the Mac OS X system :rotfl:

1) There's now an update for MSN mail available. The OP should run Windows Update.

2) The OP may need to install the drivers for video/sound cards.

There is a tool Microsoft provided to provide a compatibility check before upgrading, so this wouldn't be been a surprise.

So since I ran this compatibility check already and MS said that I am A-OK for Vista that I should have no problems?

Cool! :thumbsup2

Fewer problems, not "no" problems.

I did the compatability check (even though it is a BRAND NEW, three week old computer) and there weren't any issues.

I've got the updates, including today. No help.:guilty:

As above, I was A-OK, too.

After Microsoft gave up, they sent me to Sony. Sony told me that I got off easy - some people are having video and internet trouble as well. But tons of people are having sound problems. Both guys said that every call they're fielding begins with the words, "I just installed Vista and..." :rotfl:

We tried downloading different drivers, then tried going back to the original, nothing helped. I am now downloading everything they have (as instructed) in the hopes that it will solve my problem.

If it doesn't, they suggested going back to XP until the first "Service Pack" comes out.

If I had it to do over, I'd have waited. But jump on in if you must! Misery loves company! ;) :goodvibes

Im going to look at a new computer today with Vista installed.

Any ideas for what I should look for?

Ummmm as much as I HATE to think of you suffering alone, I will try to remember another adage: Patience is a virtue! :teeth:

I bet there is a big difference between new installs and upgrades. New computers are "born that way" while (like the Mac commercial indicates) upgrading to Vista from XP is "major surgery". I probably won't upgrade, but wouldn't have any concerns about buying a new computer that runs Vista.

With the new Vista now out, DH is going out and buying a whole new system!!
Of course this means that DD12 will now have her own computer, the old system.

Just remember (unless you know the "secret"), once you install Vista, your old system's (XP) serial number is forfeited. You can't reinstall XP.

I never had this trouble with DOS. :confused3

ok well I am here. Vista is pretty cool if its preloaed. Having some issues with sound. I have it but its quiet. I have everything at 100% so I dont know what is going on. new HP AMD dual core.

Just bought the tower/keyboard/mouse. Everything else the same.

Cant get the size of the pages figured out either. I have them set to largest but they are still small. My eyes couldnt have gotten that bad overnight LOL

DH just got a new laptop with vista and he loves it. That said, our itunes is on this computer with windows XP. I have no intention of upgrading as it is a 5 year old machine--I plan on getting a new one within a year and will just get one with vista installed. I won't risk losing all my songs!!!!
